Work Text:
sound wakes up to his alarm on a sunday.
at a distance, through the open door, he hears rattling utensils. his heartbeat quickens just a little as he reaches for his phone on the nightstand.
the voice of the news presenter summons another from outside the room.
"it's time?"
"looks like it's still under deliberation," sound nods at no one in particular. "but things just might be looking up."
twenty minutes pass, the screen flickers, the announcer dons a smile on her face. he rapidly scrolls through all the celebration with a slight tremble to his fingers.
"win!" he shouts. "they passed the bill!"
footsteps rapidly approach the room, until the man is peeking through the door. in his right hand he holds a tray, his left fumbling with his pocket, and his face flush with a jittery excitement.
"it's real?"
sound nods at his boyfriend of five years. a certain warmth fills his chest at the sight of him.
"breakfast in bed?" sound says. "i thought i only played the heroes in movies, but now i get to play the heroine." win rolls his eyes at the remark.
"its a good day to celebrate, isn't it?" win places the tray on his lap. the pancakes sound loves, made with an odd recipe win discovered upon experimentation, insisting he needed "wayyyy more protein in his diet". a hot chocolate, with cinnamon and cocoa power sprinkled over. a random pack of biscuits placed inconspicuously on the side. a single flower cut from one of win's many flowerpots in the balcony. sound stifles a giggle.
"this is so unlike you."
"shut it and eat."
and so he does, as win sits next to him, scrolling through sound's phone with a small smile. he's boucing his knee. sound notices and smiles, as he reaches for the biscuits.
he tears the rather oddly shaped packet open.
there are no biscuits.
inside, rather, is a small, velvet box. the smile grows larger. from the corner of his eye, he notices win looking at him.
he takes the box out.
"hey, sound."
sound could never explain why the nervous look on win's face makes him feel butterflies, as if he's a lovesick teenager again.
"you...." win continues. "... don't look surprised at all."
sound bursts into laughter at his now, very disgruntled boyfriend.
"sorry, it was just so obvious," sound huffs between laughs, and win buries his red face behind his palms. sound pulls his arms back. he decides against poking fun at his appearance; he's sure his face is just as flushed.
"atleast act a little surprised," a small smile forms on wins face.
"oh my gooood," sound in a monotone, and win rolls his eyes once again. "no way that's- no way. i did not see that coming. on the day they legalize gay marriage in the country. in a cube shaped pack of a round biscuit."
win's leg is still bouncing.
"if you're done bullying me..." he drags out, an expectant look on his face.
the most baffling thing is probably how win manages to still make him feel the way he does. all the heat in his face is about to give him a headache, and he's praying his expression doesn't give him away.
"get in here."
he pushes everything away and pulls win into bed with him, and win lets him.
"you haven't even looked at the ring yet," win says, looking down at sound.
"i will, i will. let me look at my fiancé first."
win's smile is the goofiest thing he's seen all week. sound wants to get up and kiss it immediately.
instead, he drops his expression.
"but you know," he says, in a pretend melancholy, "i had my own ring picked out already."
"you- really...?"
sound nods.
"for when?"
"in two weeks."
"on our hiking trip? oh sound, that would've been such an obvious proposal."
"like you're one to talk."
"hah, well this just means i win," he proclaims smugly. "well, i'm always win."
sound pulls back. "oh no, i'm so happy that even your terrible jokes sound mildly funny to me."
win falls on him, and sound wraps his arms around him like its a ritual he's performed a billion times.
(well, he hopes to reach that number one day, when they're grey haired and wrinkled.)
they lay there in a content silence.
.
"alright, i admit the plan had a few cracks, but how did you see it coming so quick?"
"darling, i know you know i never eat breakfast before brushing my teeth."
"ah."
