Dogging His Heels

Summary:

Dog had been raised and trained to pad at his master's heels, do his bidding, and guard him from danger. Adam had had his own ideas about what he wanted, which usually took precedence, but the underlying training had never really gone away. It had only been muted.

Which was why Dog was padding along at his master's heels when their journey to play games in the woods was interrupted.

Work Text:

Dog had been raised and trained to pad at his master's heels, do his bidding, and guard him from danger. Adam had had his own ideas about what he wanted, which usually took precedence, but the underlying training had never really gone away. It had only been muted.

Which was why Dog was padding along at his master's heels when their journey to play games in the woods was interrupted.

The newcomer smelt holy. Not in the gentle way of the angel that came here most often, which was only a sharp undercurrent to the scent of food and Imperial Leather soap and demon kisses and the treats that the angel kept in his pockets just for Dog. No, this was all overtones, like the cheap floor cleaner used in Adam's school, sharply unpleasant, and reminiscent of too much power and not enough fun.

Dog nudged closer to Adam's ankle as sharp words stabbed out of the holy-stinking angel, aimed at his master, demanding rather than persuading. Trying to give him orders and scolding him for disobedience - Dog had learned those verbal tones very well.

Then a hand lunged from the grey suit sleeve and Adam flinched involuntarily away from the jabbing finger.

This, Dog also knew. His master was afraid. His Master was therefore in danger. Dog had been raised to defend him from danger, and in particular, to consider angels a danger.

Dog's eyes glowed red. He lunged forward, a snarl rising in his throat and sank his teeth into the stinky-angel's ankle.

Gabriel screamed as hell-born teeth pierced his corporation and bit down into his true form. An instinctive miracle threw Dog off him, and in a clap of thunder, Gabriel fled back to Heaven.

Adam sucked in a breath of relief and ran to Dog. He had to be ok. He'd been protecting him, he shouldn't be hurt - it wasn't fair if he was hurt for doing the right thing.

Reality cringed under the force of Adam's desire, and Dog sat up, wagged his tail, and flailed his tongue, trying to get the foul taste out of his mouth.

Adam hugged him. "Good dog!" he said, and resolved to buy Dog an icecream too when the Them went to the shop. Dog had more than earned it, after all.
