Work Text:
Wakana Gojō stirred in bed. His eyes were closed, but something had jolted him from his sleep. After changing his position a few times, he suddenly opened his eyes with surprising ease and stood upright on the bed. In the darkness, he groped for his mobile phone nearby, and quickly looked at the clock.
“3:41 in the morning…”, Wakana whispered very quietly to himself. He put it back and tried a breathing exercise to calm himself.
His wife Marin Kitagawa let out a sleepy groan as she also stirred somewhat in bed and overheard the breathing.
“G- Gojō-kun?”, she said slowly, and reached out for his hand.
Wakana sat back down in bed, facing Marin. Her eyes were still closed, but her tone betrayed worry.
“A… are you alright…?”, she asked, with all the energy of someone whose sleep had been interrupted.
Wakana looked at his wife, her beautiful face still unmistakeable in the darkness, and felt a twinge of regret for having woken her up. Or, rather, a mixture of regret, embarrassment, and relief.
“I’m sorry, Kitagawa-san.”, he whispered, moving closer to her and embracing her. “I had a bad dream.”
Marin smiled and reciprocated the embrace, using her free hand to caress her husband’s face reassuringly.
“It’s alright.”, Marin whispered. “It’s alright. You’re safe, Gojō-kun. You’re safe with me.”
The last phrase touched him deeply and he blushed slightly.
Husband and wife lay in bed cuddling each other quietly. Marin took a moment to kiss Wakana.
“So…”, Marin said haltingly, as if she was willing herself awake a little longer. “What was that crappy dream that scared my husband?”
Wakana chuckled slightly, appreciating Marin’s reassuring humour. He was silent for a moment as he thought. Then he leaned in and whispered in Marin’s ear, “The truth is… I don’t even remember.”
Marin giggled softly and gave Wakana a deep and loving headpat.
“Y’see?”, she said quietly, increasingly long pauses between words. “You’ll always be safe with me, Gojō-kun.”
Wakana kissed Marin and said, “I love you, Kitagawa-san.”
Marin smiled, kissed him as well and replied, “I love you, Gojō-kun.”
They fell back asleep embracing each other, and didn’t wake up ‘til the sun shone through their window.
