Wakana Gojō thought things couldn’t get better than this. The last cosplay he helped Marin Kitagawa with was a roaring success. Reaching such a milestone gave them both the courage necessary to take the next step. Sure, it took stuttering and heavy pauses. Both shared a fear of rejection. But, by the kami, something gave them the push, and that was that. They confessed their love for each other.
Now they could enjoy their reward. They had a nice picnic in the park. At the moment, they were laying on the blanket in the grass. A good view of Tokyo stretched out before them. Wakana looked up at the sky, content. He was holding hands with his girlfriend.
Marin noticed his facial expression and giggled. “Say, Gojō-kun.”, she joked. Even with their relationship official, they were too used to their old forms of address. “You look like you’re concentrated.”
“Ah… I was?”, Wakana asked, looking at Marin. His face blushed a bit.
Marin chuckled and rolled on her side, facing her boyfriend. By the kami, he looked so cute when flustered. “Whatcha thinkin’ about?”, she asked.
Wakana smiled. He took a moment to gather his thoughts first. “Well, Kitagawa-san, it was about your cosplays…”, he said.
“Whoa! Really?”, Marin said, her voice louder with surprise.
Wakana chuckled. “There’s something I’ve noticed a bit.”, he continued. “I’m trying to understand it.”
Marin blinked and grinned. She brought her head against Wakana’s. “Like, I’m all ears, darling.”, she quipped.
Wakana laughed, and swallowed empty air in silence. It was one of those sentences that took effort to squeeze out. No different than a love confession. “Kitagawa-san, you’re such an outgoing and friendly person.”, he said. “You’re kind to everyone.”
Marin smiled and hugged Wakana’s side of the body facing her. Hearing this made her feel happy.
“I had this thought that you haven’t quite picked characters that are the same.”, Wakana said.
Marin chuckled as she thought over the statement. “Oh?”, she said in a playful voice. “What do you mean, Gojō-kun?”
“Well…”, Wakana started. “How many characters have you done so far who are upbeat, like yourself? I’m trying to think besides Rizu-kyun?”
Marin looked upwards at the sky as she thought.
“Shizuku-tan is quite the sad character.”, Wakana said. “You wanted to do Prisoner Veronica at one point, who’s aggressive.” He paused for a moment. “I was thinking about your choice of characters. You seem to pick characters that need faking an emotionless expression for cosplays.”
Marin chuckled and scratched the back of her head. This would’ve been a good moment for an “Ah… eto… bleh.” But she wasn’t that inspired at the moment.
“Wouldn’t it be easier to pick characters who are sunny and happy?”, Wakana suggested. “That way you can act like your normal self in a cosplay. It’s simpler, isn’t it?”
Marin laughed and kissed Wakana. “What can I say, Gojō-kun.”, she said, covering her mouth in a flirtatious pose. “I never thought about it that way. I kind of picked characters by instinct.”
“I see.”, Wakana said, nodding.
“You make a good point though.”, Marin said, rubbing his cheek. She chuckled. “Fashion photoshoots could use someone like you!”
Wakana blinked and then giggled. He thought to himself: this wasn’t where he imagined the conversation would go.
He wondered if this meant Marin would start mentoring him in fashion photography.
