Chapter 1: Honeysuckle husbands

Chapter Text

Raj and Shawn know that people call them the honeysuckle boys. It’s honestly kind of sweet, a callback to the early days of their relationship, when they were just little boys who were overprotective of each other.

But it’s still kind of a surprise when someone actually says it to their faces for the first time. It was kind of cute, actually, looking back now.

A tiny girl, maybe four or five years old, comes into the candy bar, clutching the hand of the babysitter named Angel that Raj and Shawn have gotten to know since the talent show.

She climbs up onto a stool while Angel watches anxiously with their arms on either side, ready to catch her if she falls. But she makes it up to a standing position. And then she says it.

“Mister Honeysuckle, can I have some gummy worms?”

Shawn tries his best not to let his surprise show as he gets a bag of gummies off the shelf and looks to Angel for payment. Angel hands him a kazoo and thanks him, nudging their kid (for the day).

“What do you say?” They ask the little one.

She smiles big and responds, “Thank you Mr Honeysuckle! Please say hi to the other Mr Honeysuckle for me!”

Angel quickly and quietly tells him, “Seriously though, thank you so much. She was the only one in today and she was so sad. I told her she could come and get some candy if she was polite, and she seems to really like you and Raj. I can’t convince her you’re not married though.”

“Huh. Well, I don’t see the harm in that. I’ll tell my ‘husband’ though.” Shawn makes air quotes with the word “husband”, as though it’s an inside joke. It may become one someday soon.

Later, in Raj’s bedroom, Shawn tells Raj about the interaction, and Raj holds up the ring pop he’d been eating and says “My dearest, will you marry me?” Or at least he tries to. They’re both laughing too hard for him to finish his sentence.

Out of breath from laughing, Shawn nods and pops the candy part of the ring in his mouth, a little bit red.

It’s only once he’s happily eating the candy that he notices that Raj has gone bright red and is covering his face with his hands.

“You know I was eating that, right?” Raj mumbles, embarrassed and probably a little flustered.

Oh. Oh.

Shawn did not know that. His face flushes, impossibly, an even brighter red than Raj’s.
