Work Text:
Raine could feel a glare of hatred that burned hotter than any sun they’d ever stepped underneath, burning a hole in the back of their neck. They turned around slowly. There Eda was, seated on the couch; arms crossed above her pregnant belly, angrier than they’d ever seen her.
“Calamity!” they exclaimed in a sing-song voice as they went to hug her.
“Don’t you “Calamity” me! You know exactly what you did!”
They froze. Of course, she found out.
“Ah, Eda!” they cried as they clutched their hearts in mock pain, “You wound me!”.
“Any wound I’ve given you now hurts less than what you’ve done to me,” she spat with vitriol. “How could you do this to me?!”
They sat on the couch beside Eda and gently wrapped an arm around her. She swatted at their hand but did not attempt to avoid their side hug. They held her head closer to their shoulder.
“Cariña, is this because I took your cake for lunch?”
Eda sniffled. They turned to her in shock as she broke down in tears.
“I-I wanted to eat it so bad! I was saving it for later! An-and when I went to the fridge to go and get it, it was gone! The container had my name on it! Camila made the food for me!” she wailed.
“Wait, how did you know I took the food?”
“Oh please!” she scoffed, looking up at them with indignation. “Who else would eat cake with the amount of satan’s sauce I put on it?”
“Point taken.” they sighed. They rested their head next to Eda’s and rubbed her shoulder gently. Eda was still tense with anger, but her crying had gotten her to loosen up a bit. They turned and gave her a tender kiss on the forehead. Eda grumbled but didn’t push them away.
“Lo siento, preciosa!” Raine apologized with a squeeze. “I had no idea you were so attached to eating the cake! Will you ever forgive me?”
“No.” Eda said flatly in a huff.
“Difficult much?” they smirked playfully as they delicately wiped a tear from her face. She growled at them. They lifted their hands up in defeat and rose from the
couch, much to Eda’s dismay. As they got up from the couch, they spotted the old record player sitting on the shelf in the corner of their eye. They felt a devious grin creep across their face.
“I’ve thought of the perfect way to cure your anger,” they chuckled.
“Whatever you’re planning, I want no part in it.” Eda scowled.
“Oh, I can assure you you’ll definitely want a part of this,” they said as they walked behind the couch and plucked the player from where it sat on the shelf.
“What are you- NO,” Eda reprimanded and pointed at them accusatively.
“I’m not doing anything wrong!” Raine protested as they set down the player on the coffee table. They shuffled through the record holder underneath the table and selected one. “I’m just putting on some nice relaxing tunes,”
“You know exactly what you’re doing! Put that record down, now!”
They eyed the player again with a devilish grin.
“Well,” they hummed mischievously. “If you insist,” They put the record into the record player and turned on the record player. As the disc began to spin slowly on the record player, they brought the tonearm over the disc and gently lowered the cartridge onto the record. The music started to play a twinkling beat. Eda’s eyes widened.
“No!” she whined, covering her face. “Any song but this one!”
“What’s wrong with this one?” they chuckled as they started a gentle boogie.
“I’m gonna be forced to forgive you just by you playing it! It’s so good!”
“Is that really such a bad thing?” they asked as they extended an inviting hand toward her. She swatted it away.
“Have it your way mi vida. I’ll have you dancing before the end of the song!”
“Ha! In your dreams!”
The singer began to sing.
“We get it on most every night.
And when that moon is big and bright,
It’s such a natural delight.
Everybody dancing in the moonlight!”
“A little rusty there on the dancing there, Rainey,” Eda smirked.
Raine scoffed.
“As if you could do better,”
If Eda wasn’t already mad at them before, she was certainly now. She shot up from her seat on the couch, grabbed Raine’s right hand with her good hand, wrapped her left arm around their waist, and dipped them slowly.
“Try me pretty bard,” she growled seductively.
Raine swooned. Despite their wife being pregnant and dressed in her barely flattering dirty pink bathrobe, she still knew all the things that would drive them mad. Raine made a mental note to return the favor sometime later. Now they had her exactly where they wanted her, and Eda had been too upset to notice until it was too late. Raine smirked up at her.
“Gotcha!” they teased.
“One word out of you and I’ll drop your ass on the floor,” Eda threatened while trying to fight the urge to smile.
“Too late, mama!” they chuckled. “And now for the final touch!”
“So help me Raine if you start singing I’ll-“
“Dancin’ in the moonlight!
Everybody’s feelin’ warm and bright!
It’s such a fine and natural sight!
Everybody dancin’ in the moonlight!”
They grabbed Eda’s waist and hoisted themselves up, giving Eda a peck on the cheek and a grin. She tried to keep a straight face, but she couldn’t help but crack a smile.
“Ah! Did I see a lil smile there?” they teased.
“Shut up and dance with me Raine,” she smirked as she rolled her eyes and brought them closer.
…
Camila was tired with a capital T. The clinic had run well all day, which was great for her patients but not so great for her. She bid farewell to her employees as she checked and double-checked that everything was locked and stored properly before leaving for the night.
She sighed as she drove out of the parking lot. It was a rather long and tiresome day. She’d barely had time to check her phone during the day without getting called away to attend to another patient. Such is the life of a healthcare worker, she guessed. She loved her job, but sometimes she needed a nice relaxing evening to unwind. As she pulled into the driveway, she noticed all the lights in the house were off.
Ah. Everyone must be away again.
She sighed. Ever since Vee started being more comfortable with traveling to the demon realm, the house has seemed more empty than ever. Sometimes, it hurt her alot. Regardless, she was happy that her kids were happy, even if it made the house less lively. She picked her phone from the cup holder. A sudden wash of guilt came over her as she saw the text messages and missed calls from Eda. She gazed in the distance. She knew based on the time Raine would be at home with Eda by now, but she couldn’t help but be worried.
What if something happened to Eda while she was away? She was heavily pregnant but still insisted on being left at home alone while everyone was away. It made Camila extremely nervous, but she still left Eda to her own devices with the knowledge that someone would check up on her throughout the day. Eda would only call if it was something extremely important.
She looked over in the distance towards the woods, where she knew the door to the Demon Realm was tucked away in the dainty little cottage her and her daughters had worked to fix up. She bit her nail.
One quick check at the Owl House should ease her nerves. One quick check and then back to her house to sleep. Simple as that.
She got out of the car, and made a brisk walk towards the woods. She didn’t run, but she couldn’t slow herself.
She didn’t know what to expect when she came through the door, but she certainly didn’t expect this.
The music was lively, warm, and full of color. Eda, donned in her lovely bathrobe and Raine still dressed in their work clothes were laughing, twirling, and dancing together throughout the living room. Their laughter echoed in the halls, filling them with joy and life. Only heaven truly knew how long they had been dancing, but the love they had shared was true to any one with eyes. She smiled as she leaned in the doorway. She loved those two dorks.
Eda noticed her in the doorway.
“Camila! Come give me a hug!” she beamed. She sped over to her and squeezed Camila off the ground in a bear hug.
“EDA! NOTHING OVER 20 POUNDS!! REMEMBER?” Raine cautioned as they rushed to her side.
“Ah, shut it. Let me love on my favorite partner. The one who didn’t eat my cake,”
“You’re still mad about that?”
“Yes.”
Raine sighed.
“Well, I did make it for her and for her only,” Camila reasoned. “Tell you what. I’ll make you some more if you put me down now. Okay?” she asked as she tried unsuccessfully to stifle a laugh.
Eda pouted and gave her a kiss before lowering her back down to the ground. She didn’t let her go and swayed them both in tune with the music.
“Dance with us before you bake Mimi?” Eda whispered to her. “Raine put me in a dancing mood and it’ll be much less embarrassing if you’re dancing with us,”
“Of course!”
Eda’s right hand slid down Camila’s arm, held her hand, and pulled her towards the center of the room. The music’s rich rhythmic flows throughout the room and loosened the tenseness Camila had been building up throughout her stressful day at work. Eda twirled Camila with her good hand and twirled her again for good measure. She rather reluctantly passed Camila off to Raine, who led her in a playful waltz. It wasn’t organized or a pretty dance by any means, but it was their dance, and she wouldn’t trade it for the world. She could feel herself smiling from ear to ear and she just knew her partners felt the same. It truly didn’t seem like this moment would ever end. Camila hoped it never would.
Unfortunately it did. Camila’s exhaustion finally caught up with her and she sat down on the couch, completely drained. Eda flopped onto the couch next to her. Raine smiled and went to turn off the record player.
“Whew, I’m tired! That spell gave me way more power in my feet than I think I have right now. I’m gonna take a nap right now. Nighty night!”
“Eda, it’s like 9. Go to the bedroom and sleep up in the nest,” Raine chided.
“If you carry me there I just might forgive you,” Eda pouted.
Raine grimaced. Eda burst out laughing.
“You should see your face right now, it’s hilarious! Alright, alright. I’ll go to bed in the nest. Help me up will ya?”
Raine pulled Eda up by her extended hand and she wrapped her arm around their shoulders to assist her walking. Eda winced a little as her feet hit the floor.
“Whew! The healers were not joking about those sore feet! I don’t think I’ll be moving for a while,”
Raine turned back to Camila as they helped Eda towards the staircase.
“You’re welcome to join us in the nest once you’re done Camila,”
“She’s welcome to join me. You’re sleeping on the couch tonight,” Eda sassed.
“Darn! And over a cake?” Raine complained.
“Complain more and it’ll be for the whole week,” Eda chimed as her voice drifted away as they entered the bedroom.
Camila chuckled as she made her way toward the kitchen.
She loved those two dorks.
