Work Text:
"Pray the sinner's prayer, Samatha." His mother's voice weighed cold and heavy on Sam's chest, painful like metal in the way that it pressed and bit and broke. He choked on the haywire tears running down his warped face, chin shivering as he nearly screamed with another sob.
"N-No."
"Pray the Sinner's Prayer." His mother's voice coiled around their throat like a snake. "Now."
And the wrong name dropped again from her wrinkled, unscarred lips like rotten food spat upon the floor. Their mother leaned down to look at a hysterical Sam in the eye, sneering, her voice somehow a deep resonant they had never heard.
"You unlovable, horrid creature, you vile dead thing. You are only here because you have been led to suffering by your actions."
____________
Sam woke up with a scratchy half scream, clutching the moth-eaten blankets around themselves. His entire body shook, face cold as the air hit the wet tears on his face. He couldn't look down at himself. It was much harder to ignore your body when it was no longer human.
"Sam?" A tired raspy voice called out in the dark bedroom. That same voice held Sam's name like it was the most precious thing in the world. "What's wrong?"
One of the perks of having a body made of black goo was that he could jump up from his bed and cross over to Kendall's without physically getting hurt.
He curled up under his sibling's arm and wrapped his own two around xem as he buried his head in xyr side. Kendall cuddled them close.
"Bad dream?"
They nodded. They couldn't speak, not now, words were too hard. But after being forced into silence for years, making some sort of sound was reassuring, so they whimpered and let themselves sob into Kendall's ribs.
"Shhh." The space in xyr arms was cold at first, slowly warming as it adapted to Sam's body heat held in by him and the two thin blankets they had. "It's okay... You are safe, you are here and you are going to be okay. It's all good now."
Sam's emotions eventually settled into something more peaceful- he couldn't see himself falling back asleep for fear of what his memories would give him, but he could relax and process these things on his own time and terms. He could rest now.
____________
The door was slightly opened, catching Kendall's attention.
"Is everything alright here?" Virus stood on the door frame rubbing her eyes, her three floating eyes all bloodshot mixed with cyan.
"Everything's fine. Just... a little night terror... That's all." Xe answered.
She yawned. "Alright. If everything's fine, I will be going. Don't forget about Drain's book. You need to return that thing to his library." And with all that said, she closed the door and returned to her dimension.
