Meeting You Many Times

Summary:

Sonic and Blaze, an unlikely pair no one in school expects. They live different lives and have different life experiences, there was no way they could have anything in common. In the beginning they only knew each other existence in school because of the gossip surrounding them separately.

One moved to Mobius to expand her horizon, and the other a native who wants to travel out for the same reason.

After meeting under a heavy storm, they continue meeting one another and getting to know each other.

Notes:

I loved the Sonic games growing up, though I haven’t played all of them yet, only what I could grab in ds and wii form.

Seeing Blaze the first time, I already like her design, aesthetic, and this vibe she have versus Amy (which I thought she was only girl option). Then I got the Sonic Rush games and it’s sequel, and she immediately became one of my top favorite character growing up. One thing led to another knowing her story, her skills, and then the fan art.

Summarizing, Sonaze ship exists, I like it. Both the romantic and platonic sense these two give.

Chapter 1: Rain

Chapter Text

Call it fate, or by the sounds of the *rolling thunder, pure chance— whatever it is. These two shouldn’t be paired together. Based on the school’s gossip surrounding these two, there’s no way these two would get along. Hell, the idea of seeing them near each other seems to be bizarre.

Sonic the Hedgehog, the blue speedster known to be careless and carefree. Jumping into adventures headfirst, sometimes in the face of danger without a second thought. Popular with his peers with his fun charisma and upbeat attitude towards life. He easily gets along with everyone he comes across… with some individuals being the exception.

Blaze the Cat, meticulous and serious purple scholar known to be careful and knowledgeable. She sees a problem and plans ahead on how to solve it. A lot of the time her guard is up and she doesn’t heed anything she deems as distractions, making it harder for her to make friends and for others to approach her… save for the very few people that pass through her barriers and stayed and accepted her wholly.

It’s not that they both believe in the rumors about themselves, but could only go with what they heard of each other. They never shared a class together, very rarely noticed each other’s presence, and never spared a glance with one another. Those gossips are the only reason they became aware of each other, knowing they simply attend the same school.

What everyone wasn’t expecting, including Sonic and Blaze, is how the two finally meet.

“Out of everything I chose to leave it at home.” Blaze mutters as she watches the heavy rain outside of the school building.

Usually the cat plans everything the day before; what school supplies she’ll need for class, what kind of food she’ll make for lunch, and what miscellaneous items she could possibly need.

Her mistake was to not bring her umbrella today… Although the flaw was she assumed the weather was gonna stay sunny all week, not checking the weather app in her phone again from yesterday. Her only protection was her school blazer, but it wasn’t thick enough to protect nor did it have a hood to cover her head.

her other source of protection was her school bag… which also doesn’t have thick materials for protection. Plus, her homework was inside and Blaze didn’t want to risk wet paper on her way home.

‘It’s not like I mind it…’ She thought as she gingerly wrapped her blazer around her bag.

Once she tied the sleeves into a loose knot, she placed the one strap back on her shoulder. She stares out into the rain. Leaving herself defenseless in only her white blouse, plaid skirt, and pairs of pink shoes, the purple cat mentally prepares for the upcoming cold.

”It did not need to rain this heavily, sheesh.”

She snapped out of her preparations to turn to the source of a boy’s voice.

On her right stood a blue hedgehog, whistling at the weather in front of them. He squeezed the straps of his backpack. He then turned his head to see who was next to him.

”Are… Are you gonna be okay going out with no protection?” He comments seeing her blazer wrapped around her bag.

”I rather not have my assignments get wet.”

”Forgot your umbrella?” Sonic cocked a smirk.

”I wish. I actively choose to leave it at home… it’s been sunny all week, so I was sure.”

”Yeah, the weather is unpredictable no matter how good the weather app tracks.” Blaze bitterly agrees with the blue boy’s statement.

Suddenly the girl sees a plastic cover above her vision. Blaze raises her brows confused until she follows the hand holding it, leading to Sonic.

”There’s no need. I appreciate the offer, but that leaves you unprotected.”

“Not a problem.” He responds quickly, leaning his umbrella more towards the cat.

Blaze wasn’t buying that happy grin he’s holding up. His green eyes showed kindness, but was hiding something else…

”You don’t like the rain, do you?” She calls him out with such bluntness.

She got her answer as the blue being’s arm dropped a bit and he let out a weak chuckle.

”I’m not a huge fan of water. Drinking it, totally refreshing. Besides that, nope!”

”Keep your umbrella. I don’t need to take away your only shield.”

“I can’t just leave you waiting for the rain to stop. It’s not going to anytime soon.”

Blaze frowns, thinking he’s taking pity on her. She narrowed her eyes slightly. Immediately disregarding it, she turned her focus back on the intense rain. Subtly she slid one foot back, leaning forward in a track runner position.

Whoosh! Off the cat goes outside of the school and turns a sharp corner once she passes the gates. Hugging the bag close to her chest as she presses on to get to the train.

the harsh pitter-patter of the millions of droplets hits her fur. Some of the rain would hit her eyelids, she thrust out one of her arms to be her shield.

Suddenly that familiar plastic covering appears above her visions. Her yellow eyes widened seeing that same exact arm holding it.

”W-What are you doing?!”

“Like I said, can’t leave you to yourself against this weather!” Sonic shouted over the storm.

”It’s fine! You should be going home!” Blaze then pushes herself, surpassing him. But he did the same where they’re running in the same pace beside each other.

”If you think you outrun me, you’re sadly mistaken.” Sonic flashes his signature grin as he is still able to hold his umbrella over Blaze’s head.

’That must be Sonic the Hedgehog…!’ She immediately realizes as she recalls part of the gossip, he’s one of the school’s top track stars.

”I’ll have you know, I’m quite the fast runner myself!”

“Outrun me?! Keep dreaming!”

Little did Blaze the cat know, she was wearing that same sly grin Sonic the Hedgehog is sporting.

”Never expected we have the same route home.” Sonic comments as they both sat across from each other in the train.

He uses whatever dry spot remains on his jacket to ruffle his quills. Blaze on the other hand, untied her blazer to open her school bag, checking her stuff is still dry.

Miraculously they are.

”I never noticed you on the train. How did I never see you here?” She asked mainly herself. Seeing her school mate’s cobalt fur bright against the train's duller interior color, it's incredible to have never noticed someone with such bright colors.

"I could name a couple of things..." Sonic mumbled to himself behind his palm resting on his chin. But he then changed the topic with an intrigue smirk. “I never thought I would meet someone else that could match my speed. I thought only Shadow could match me.”

“You should join the girls’ track team.” A pair of yellow eyes blinks and then tilt her head slightly with confusion.

“I am on the girls’ track team.” His green eyes grew with surprise. He carefully whipped the jacket onto his lap.

“That’s awesome! I’m on the boy’s track team.”

“The event you’re on–”

“200 meter dash.”

The cat subtly leaned forward to listen more attentively, wanting to see how much these two could have. But retracted a bit when the hand she’s been all afternoon extends to her.

“My name is Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog.”

She hesitatingly lifts her hand from her lap, leaving a pair of hands in the air. Seconds later she shyly wraps her fingers around and does a quick one-two handshake.

“Blaze the Cat.”

The two then continue talking to one another, but asking more questions about the area since Blaze recently moved to Mobius a couple months ago. Then it tangent to Sonic’s adventure and babble on random small topics, Blaze listening to everything with small reactions. Eventually the stories move on to getting to know each other’s backgrounds.

Sonic learns Blaze moved from a different country named Solaris to broaden her horizon, based on what her parents told her. Her new living situation would give her the higher education and experience for when she inherits her family’s company once she graduates. Blaze learns Sonic is a Mobius native but plans on traveling around the world when he graduates. He is looking to do mostly freelance work to pay for his lifetime goal.

“My stop is coming up now.” She interrupts, seeing the information sliding on the train’s monitors. Blaze re-organize her paper in her bag, got up from her seat to grab her blazer to wrap it around her waist. Then tried to lightly push her way to the nearby door.

“It was great meeting you.”

“Don’t think this is a one time thing.” The blue boy gave her a challenging smirk. “I’ll see around school, and now we’re bus buddies.”

At first she didn’t get whatever he was talking about. A few seconds to process everything, Blaze gave him a nod before exiting the train.

Was it fate or chance that these unlikely pairs met? Nah, Sonic has been trying to find the opportunity ever since he heard about the mysterious cat.

It all started when he heard about a newcomer smoking everyone else during try-outs. Followed up with this person is a new student, and a new citizen in Mobius.

Curiosity already got the best of him. So Sonic begins running around the building to see the new kid in school. The gossip he heard around were his main source; knowing the name of the person is Blaze, what class they’re in, and what event  they smoked the other competitors.

It didn’t take long to find out who Blaze was. It took a couple of days and a lunch period to find her, sitting at a bench in the farther part of the courtyard.

From afar there was no readable emotion from the Cat. Blaze simply stares ahead, briefly breaks away to eat her lunch, and then continues the previous notion. She is alone, but doesn’t look lonely… it didn’t sit well with Sonic though. He wants to meet the mysterious new student that caught his attention.

Unfortunately he didn’t even get two steps forward, the bell rang signaling to start class again today. He sped around the corner to not get caught by a pair of wary yellow eyes.

Later the gossip begins to bother him. They went from being impressed by Blaze’s speed and endurance, to complaining and talking about her personality. How she acts coldly towards her classmates, never give them her time, and she never smiles

It’s simply nervousness. No need to bad mouth someone who’s still adjusting to her environment.

The hedgehog begins to get really bothered when he learns he doesn’t share a single class with Blaze. The one friend that does is Shadow, but of course, his dark counterparts don't help him.

Mission failed and now the blue hedgehog is bummed out. No thanks to his rival not wanting to help, which is fine…!

Taking his slums with him, he walks over to the train station. Upon entering he took his usual seat, he plopped his backpack in his lap and unzipped it. Rummaging inside until he successfully finds and pulls out his headphone.

Plugging it in his phone and opening his music player, he zones out and stares out the window as he waits for the train to start moving.

Mindlessly he watches the wave of people entering or leaving through the door. His eyes was about to break away from the waves of people, but a familiar shade of purple enter his eyesight.

He blinked rapidly to make sure he was seeing an illusion. But there she was; Blaze the Cat, and the new mysterious student.

She appears to not enjoy her day out of school. Her eyes half-lidded and staring at the floor as she secured her spot far from the door. Her hand gripping tightly on the pole attaches to a different set of seats from Sonic’s.

The new student looked distressed. Her other hand hugged her school bag closely to her chest.  She slowly raised the pole-gripping hand up to rest forehead.

This is his chance! Sonic gets up his seat while resting his headphone on the back of his neck. His smile gets wider by the increments as he gets closer to the cat.

Blaze’s face then lit up with alert. Then she digs into her bag to fish out her phone.

Sonic quickly whipped his head around. Frustrated with his luck with approaching her. He then slowly turns back to focus on her, assuming she’s getting a call from her parents asking about her day—

She was laughing? Not loudly but she subtly shook as she was laughing into her arm. It was a small smile, but enough to be a complete change from the whole rumored coldness. Her yellow eyes shines with mirth as she casually lean her head to the side to be closer to her phone, whoever is calming her.

Shortly to say, he was a bit starstruck.

From then he would glance at the cat, whenever they would cross paths. Of course she doesn’t do the same and kept walking forward with no side glance, to whatever destination she needs to go.

He then would occasionally look over from the school roof to see Blaze at her usual spot. Sometimes she would have headphones over her ears and relax into her seat on the bench. Sonic hope one day to walk up and ask what kind of music she listen to. Then after school, he would watch Blaze from a far when they ride the same train. Witnessing the complete change in expressions whenever she’s receive something on her phone, or not letting people pushing her around. The scene that impressed him is when she display kindness and chivalry toward certain train attendees. One time, an older and very pregnant dog needed a seat. Blaze went the extra mile and gave up her seat and reach a hand out to guide her newfound seat.

In a not subtle way, he finds out his friend share the same class as the Cat, and would vaguely ask what she’s like.

Shadow not being any help in his curiosity.

Sonic maybe thought… he doomed from the start and not being able to even stand beside her. During school hours, there no chance to approach due their different schedule. When lunchtime rolls around he couldn’t bring himself to disturb her peace and only watch from a distance. On the train he can forget about trying, especially when it’s always crowded with other riders, separating them to different ends of the station.

Blaze is unbothered by everything around her, while the blue boy is mentally kicking himself.

Of course to make his mood more dampened after a couple of tries, a thunderstorm made an appearance.

Sonic is never a fan of these kind of soggy weather. The sky is cover in grey and the multiple puddles on the ground, makes it depression.

Thankfully he brought an umbrella, recalling the weather reports saying a storm is coming. Though he knows nature is unpredictable, he always cautious when there’s any sign of rain days prior.

Because of the weather, there’s no practice after school. Begrudgingly he strolls out towards the front door. Seeing the big trails of water running down the glass panes, Sonic frowns.

Then in the bottom corner of the door’s window, there was a purple blue.

Blaze? What’s she still doing here? She seem like a person to leaving early once school is over.

Did she forget to bring an umbrella? That doesn’t sound like her…

Sonic playfully flip his tied umbrella in one hand. A smile creeps on his lips as he lowly speed walk to the doors.

“It did not need to rain this heavily, sheesh.”
