“I’m sorry,” he tries to say. The darkness is heavier, now. Oppressive. His body won’t move, his lungs won’t fill, there is blood in his throat and he is dying. He is dying.
I wish I could stop this, he thinks as he fades, as the world around him slips into nothingness and he does, too. I wish I could save you. I wish I had been enough. I wish–
A guitar wails, drums pound, and Eddie is alive.
He jolts upright with a gasp that feels more like a sob, adrenaline thrumming through his veins, heart beating erratically in his ears.
Something is tangled around his ankles, pinning him, trapping him and he kicks desperately, freeing his legs and throwing himself backwards. He hits a wall– he hits a wall, he hits a wall– and squeezes his eyes shut, waiting for teeth and ripping and pain, but–
“Ed!” Wayne calls from…somewhere, voice cutting cleanly through the panic fogging his brain. “Turn that noise down ‘fore you wake up the whole neighborhood!”

Or, Eddie dies in 1986.
In 1981, he wakes up. And this time, no one is dying.

It’s a bad idea. Steve knows it’s a bad idea. It’s extraordinarily, astronomically bad. And he isn’t exactly known for his brain, so if he can recognize the idea as categorically not good–
He’s desperate, is the thing.
Desperate to escape the knowing stares and the pitying glances and King Steve sneered like an insult or whispered like a prayer. Desperate to find a version of himself that doesn’t have to live a certain way, say certain things, be certain anything.
He’s just…tired of it. Tired of being the Hair or the King, tired of wearing a jacket that’s too tight in a role that doesn’t fit anymore.
And he knows that there’s only one person in Hawkins who knows how to defy expectations and shuck an ill-fitting role like he was made to do it.

“Second of all,” she stresses, talking over him. “Does he know it’s a competition? Or did you decide it was? Is something in your little jock brain telling you it needs to be one?”
“No!” He angrily throws another pretty pink bouquet in the cart. “He told me ‘your move, Harrington.’ Who does that??”

Summary
Eddie has put in so much effort to fit in lately, maybe a little bit too much.
He’s trying his best to put all of this in the past. He made friends along the way and he’s pretty good at hiding the things that keep him from being like them.
But he can’t do anything like anyone else. He needs more sleep, more explanations, more time alone. He's trying to hide his tics and fears and questions while trying to deal with the way his heart gets tight and his skin prickles whenever he's with Steve.

Corroded Coffin has finally made it big! Eddie can hardly believe it. And what better way to celebrate the end of their World Tour than with having Chrissy, his Alpha, propose to him? There was no better way. At least that is, until the press leaks the engagement, and now Eddie has to make a long-overdue trip back to Hawkins. The last place on earth he wants to go. But he still needs his stubborn ex-alpha and husband to give him a divorce before old feelings flare up.
