Work Text:
There was a knock on the door. Himeko had just sat down to grade her papers and had gotten her table ready with a spread of cheese and crackers. And some wine of course. She sighed as she got up to open the door.
"This had better be important," she muttered to herself.
"Am I not important to you anymore?"
There stood her wife, with a pout on her face and a box in hand. She looked as good as the day she had left a month ago for a high profile operation in South Korea. God she looked good.
"Ma'am, will you welcome me inside or will I have to stand here with pom pom all day?"
That shook Himeko out of her reverie.
"Pom pom?"
That's when she noticed the box was moving.
"Uh, Kafka, what have you done now?"
"Nothing at all, just bought you a gift," she said, lifting the box up to enunciate her point. Himeko was just about to open the box when she heard a meow.
"IS that what I think it is?"
Kafka set the box down and a tiny kitten jumped out of the box, sniffing and licking Himeko's ankles.
"Oh my god it's a kitten. It's so cute," Himeko squatted and picked up the kitten and held it like it was the most fragile thing in the world.
"Hey I'm here too. You know? Your wife? Who loves you very much?"
Himeko rolled her eyes and put a hand around her neck and pulled her in.
"The love is questionable my dear."
"Is that so?"
Himeko giggled and pressed her lips onto Kafka's lips. "I've missed you so much," she said in a soft voice.
"I don't believe you." There was that pout again. It hadn't changed since the day she met her all those summers ago. Kafka was the officer in charge of a espionage case and the spy happened to work in the same University as Himeko. Kafka had joined as a guest lecturer. They had chemistry from the day they met, that was obvious. It was a slow dance, and when Kafka finally asked Himeko out on a date she was besieged with joy. She still remembered how Kafka got a little too drunk on their date and gave away her secret, and then realising what she'd done. 'I might have to kill you now. I've never let my guard down against people you're such an anomaly Ms Himeko.' Well, obviously Himeko had to kiss her then. She had been wanting too for a while then. And as they say, the rest was history.
"Pouting will get you nowhere."
"Really now? I have it on good record that a certain redhead finds that very cute and loves to see it."
"Your spies are getting bad at their work, you need to find new people."
"Hmm, I'd love to continue this conversation but it's very cold out here and I'm not dressed for the weather."
Himeko laughed, and clasped Kafka's hand with her own and pulled her in, closing the door behind her. She placed the kitten on the floor and pulled in Kafka to welcome her properly. She tasted just like she did always, sweet with a taste of her chocolate lip balm. Kafka turned them and Himeko found herself against the door as she kissed her jaw. She placed her hands on Kafka's back inside her leather jacket and ran her hands inside her shirt. She was just about to pull off her shirt when a meow startled the both of them.
"Uh," Kafka paused and turned back. The kitten had somehow gotten herself into her shoe and was meowing for help. Himeko could not help but laugh.
"Damnit Pom Pom, you were supposed to help me woo my wife not interrupt us."
"Now now, leave the kitten alone she's innocent." Himeko picked up the kitten and cuddled her against her chest.
"I can't believe it. I'm losing to a kitten."
"Well then you should have thought it through before bringing her here". Kafka just shook her head and pulled her luggage in, muttering about competition.

"So how are you back so early? I wasn't expecting to see you for months."
"The suspect was too impatient and gave himself away too soon. Easiest mission I've had in ages."
"Does this mean you get extra time off?"
Kafka was about to answer when noticed the misty eyes.
"Hey hey, I'm here now. And yes I have 2 months off." She pulled Himeko into a hug and ran her hand through her hair. "I know you're worried about me, I'm sorry I'm not here for you, a lot."
"It's been 6 years I should be used to this by now, but I can't, it hurts to see you go away on another long mission with no assurance that I'll see you again." Her face was buried in her chest and Kafka hugged her tight.
"I won't lie and say that I will always be safe, but you have to know that I'm not as reckless as I was back in the day. I had nothing to come back to, but now I have you. I might be called Spider in my missions but even spiders need some reprieve from building their webs."
She patted Himeko's back, soothing her and calming her down. It hurt to see Himeko sad. Even more so because she was the reason. She had wondered occasionally, if Himeko would have been better off without her. If she hadn't asked her out, if she had just kept her feelings to herself. She was selfish for once and had put herself first and it was the best thing to have ever happened to her.
"I can hear your thoughts going at 100 kmph."
Kafka laughed, and pulled in Himeko tighter. "Just thinking about how lucky I am, love."
"So are we not gonna address the elephant in the room?"
Kafka looked down at Himeko and raised an eyebrow.
"The kitten, where did she come from."
She glanced at the kitten asleep on a makeshift bed made out of a throw pillow.
"Funny story, but when I was camped out in the safe house, this little one kept biting my ankles, turns out she was hungry and I'd given her biscuits once. She took a liking to me."
"So you picked up a kitten off the street?", Himeko had a surprised expression.
"Hey, I can be spontaneous at times too okay? I couldn't just leave her there, she was my only company for a week. Besides, she knows too many government secrets."
"Darling, it's okay, I know theres a heart somewhere in here," she patted on her chest, "that can't leave kittens abandoned apparently. It's okay to embrace it."
Kafka huffed, trying to maintain a semblance of her spy image. She cleared her throat.
"Anyways," she pulled Himeko up to kiss her forehead, "enough about the kitten. Give me some attention will you? I missed you, a lot."
"Hmm, I'll think about it."
"Is that so?" Kafka stood up suddenly and glanced down at Himeko.
"Hey get back here and let me cuddle you."
She raised an eyebrow and picked up Himeko in her arms.
"If my wife isn't gonna give me attention I'm gonna have to take matters into my own hands".
"Put me down you heathen," Himeko said while giggling. She put her arms around her neck and pulled her in for another kiss.
"I love you so much," she mumbled against her lips.
Kafka was overwhelmed in the best way. She didn't know what she had done to deserve Himeko but she was thankful to the universe everyday for bringing her into her life.
"I love you too."

The morning sunshine peeked it's way through the blinds and hit Himeko's eyes. She groaned and turned, facing Kafka.
"Morning, Dr Himeko."
Himeko smiled. She could feel Kafka's gaze on her. The last two months were amazing to say the least. She'd taken a leave of absence from her University and they'd both gone to their lakehouse for a getaway. They deserved it goddamit. With the kitten in tow of course. They'd spent the last month hiking, boating, and the occasional wine sampling. Himeko was the happiest she had been in months. She was dreading tomorrow, when it would all end. Not really, but she wouldn't have Kafka all to herself anymore. Kafka had taken a lighter assignment so she could be in the same city, she deserved the rest after being on the road for more than a year.
"Good morning Agent spider?"
Kafka laughed, that low sexy sound that still caused her to curl her toes.
"Wake up sleepyhead it's almost noon. We need to start driving before the snow gets worse."
"Do we really have to?"
A meow coming from the living room answered the question for her.
"How is the cat more important to you than me?" Kafka says as Himeko walks in with the kitten in her hands.
"It has added cuteness points."
"You don't find me cute anymore?" There was that pout again. Himeko just smiled as she took in her two favourites in the world.

"See you in the evening." Kafka kissed Himeko goodbye and left to report back to work.
Himeko got all her things ready with a cat carrier so she could take Pom Pom to the university with her. March 7th was going to love her.
She was looking at some raw data from her research when her phone rang.
"Hello Natasha, what's up?"
Natasha was Kafka's colleague and a close friend of theirs.
"I'm actually calling you to inform you that you've been booked for destruction of government property".
Himeko sat straight and cleared her throat.
"Excuse me?"
"There was a very visible hickey on Kafka's neck when she came in and I'm informing you that defiling government property is a serious offense."
Himeko was a mix of embarrassment and laughter.
"Natasha you little shit."
"Don't listen to her Himeko, I think it's very sexy of you to defile govt property", she could hear in the background, the voice belonging to Serval.
"Can you guys stop teasing my wife?"
"Okay okay, alright I've had my fun teasing her, alright Himeko just make sure the hickey isn't seen next time alright? Getting charged for the same crime twice is serious."
"Noted ma'am", Himeko said with a laugh.
She could hear a disturbance from the other side and then, "I miss you."
"I miss you too, make sure you eat lunch and please for the love of God, hide the hickey."
