“I knew my partner would come save me…and you did.”
“Yeah” Rei breathed a sigh of relief as he helped Kazuki limp out of the kitchen. Once they made it back out into the hallway, Kazuki stopped them.
“One sec” He fished the expensive lighter Rei had given him out of his coat pocket and flipped the cap open to light it. Hopping on one foot, he drew back from Rei slightly and tossed it back into the kitchen. It hit the propane tank lying next to Ogino, who they had left choking on his own blood. They both flinched at the sound of the tank exploding and the subsequent rush of heat.
“What was that for?” Rei asked.
“To scare away any of your fathers goons that might still be in the building.”
“Huh. Good idea” Rei admitted. He thought he had taken out the last of the security team before dealing with Ogino, but better safe than sorry.
“Plus…” Kazuki looked at him with a mischievous grin. “I wanted to make sure that creep saw his precious little book get burned to a crisp before he died.”
“You’re crazy.” Rei huffed as he guided Kazuki back into leaning on him.
“Come on, he totally deserved it.” Rei rolled his eyes but didn’t disagree. Ogino was truly a monster.
Though it had some selfish intentions, Kazuki’s plan did seem to work, as they were able to make their way down the hallway without encountering anyone. Once they were a safe distance away, Rei led Kazuki over to sit on the ground next to one of the mansion's many bathrooms. Being the headquarters of a crime organization, every one of them was equipped with a first aid kit.
Remembering all the times he had to use them on his own wounds as a child, Rei found where the kit was hidden in no time. They didn’t have time to properly deal with Kazuki’s bullet wound right now, but he had to at least clean it a bit and stop the bleeding so that it didn’t turn into more of a problem later.
Rei swapped his black gloves for a pair of sterile latex ones from the kit. He tossed the black ones aside. He only wore them to hide his fingerprints on jobs, so he would no longer need them after today.
He gingerly rolled Kazuki’s pants up to the knee and got to work on his leg. Thankfully, the bullet had passed clean through and hadn’t hit any arteries, bones or major nerves. Rei began to dab at the wound with an antiseptic.
“Fuck!” Kazuki winced and hunched forward, face twisted in pain. He clutched Rei’s arm.
“Sorry” Rei had forgotten to warn him about the stinging. Rei needed both his hands free, so he moved Kazuki’s hand down to his thigh. He tried to be as thorough as possible while also being fast. Kazuki winced and groaned his way through it, gripping Rei’s leg whenever the pain got intense. Once Rei was done with cleaning out the wound he placed his hand over Kazuki’s.“You alright?”
“Yeah.” Kazuki leaned back against the wall and sighed. He was still clearly in pain but had stopped gritting his teeth and panting. Rei nodded and turned back to the first aid kit. He rifled through it looking for the proper type of bandage. As he was searching, he found a small packet of painkillers.
“Here” He would have offered them to Kazuki sooner, but he honestly forgot that all the kits had them. Rei’s father wanted him to be conditioned to pain, so Rei was always forbidden from using them.
“Oh thank god, my other ones wore off and my shoulder is killing me now too” Kazuki ripped open the pack and dry swallowed them. Rei found what he was looking for and pressed the bandage onto Kazuki’s leg before wrapping it with gauze.
“How are you holding up? Is your head okay?” Kazuki reached forward and carefully brushed the hair off of Rei’s forehead to look at where he had headbutted Ogino. The impact had broken the skin near his hairline, leaving a trail of blood down the right side of his face. Rei glanced up at the touch before turning his focus back down to the task at hand.
“I’m okay. No signs of concussion.” Rei assured him. He finished wrapping his calf and stripped the bloodied latex gloves off. Kazuki grabbed Rei’s tie and gently tugged him closer.
“What are you doing?”
“You’re hurt too.” Kazuki said firmly. He pushed Rei’s hair out of the way and cleaned the cut with an alcohol wipe. As he stuck the bandage on his forehead, Rei couldn’t help but laugh to himself. Kazuki had gotten shot and he was worried about a small abrasion on Rei’s head. He really was a mother hen through and through. By now, he knew better than to argue when Kazuki was adamant about taking care of him, so he let him fuss.
Once Kazuki was satisfied that Rei’s head wound was taken care of, Rei helped him to his feet. He let him test putting his weight on his leg a couple times before letting go, but he stayed close just in case. Kazuki carefully tried taking a couple steps. He still couldn’t put his full weight on his left leg, but he was able to limp along without Rei supporting him.
“Alright. That should do for now.” Kazuki leaned back against the wall. “So next is up is—“
“Thank you…For everything” Rei interrupted. “But this next part is between me and my father…” Kazuki turned to him in shock.
“What!?”
“Sorry. But someone’s gotta secure the getaway car.” Rei lied. The real reason that Rei wanted to face his father alone was to protect Kazuki. He knew his father would want to keep him alive if possible, in order to carry on the Suwa name, but if Shigeki saw Kazuki he would simply shoot him on sight.
“Are you sure you’re gonna be okay in there by yourself?” Kazuki asked in a small voice.
“Yeah. I promise” Rei held up his pinky, a gesture that Miri had taught him earlier that day. He still didn’t really understand what would happen if he broke a pinky promise, but he didn’t intend to find out.
Kazuki looked at him for a moment before cracking a smile. He reached forward and curled his pinky around Rei’s. Rei smiled back at him.
Before Rei knew it, he was getting yanked forward by his finger. With reflexes only an assassin could have, Kazuki grabbed Rei’s waist with his other hand and caught Rei’s lips with his own.
Rei’s eyes widened for a moment in surprise. He couldn’t believe this was happening, and in his childhood home of all places. Rei had spent years inside these walls being taught that he could never find love, especially in the arms of someone who couldn’t produce an heir to the Suwa bloodline.
Yet here he was, kissing a man he loved deeply right outside his fathers study.
Rei closed his eyes and threaded his fingers through Kazuki’s hair, chasing more closeness and pressure. A small hum escaped his throat when Kazuki’s arm wrapped fully around him, pressing their bodies fully against each others. The kiss was desperate but tender, firm but gentle, exhilarating but comforting. It was like coming in from the cold to a warm home.
“You have NO idea how long I’ve wanted to do that” Kazuki sighed against his lips once they finally pulled away, breathless and blushing and smiling.
Rei was speechless, so he leaned forward and pressed his forehead against Kazuki’s. They stayed like that for a moment. Listening to the other breathe and relishing in the comfort of the others embrace.
“You better stay alive, I don’t think I can handle being a single father.” Kazuki finally joked, trying to ease both of their nerves about the danger yet to come.
“I’ll be fine.” Rei looked into his partner’s beautiful, ruby red eyes as he pressed his lips to Kazuki’s little finger, which had stayed wrapped around his own this whole time. “I swear.”
He leaned forward to give Rei one last quick peck on the cheek before stepping back. Rei almost felt dizzy…maybe he did have a concussion.
Using the wall as a support, Kazuki began making his way towards the garage to steal a car. Rei watched him leave, his cheeks still warm.
Rei wished he could tell his childhood self that it does get better, that one day he would have a real family that loved and accepted him for who he was. Everything good in his life, he owed to Kazuki and Miri. No matter what happened, Rei knew he would find his way back to them. He had too.
He took a deep breath and steeled himself for the final challenge of this mission. It was time to face his father. One last obstacle, and Rei could spend the rest of his life with Kazuki and Miri.
