Chapter 1: My Heart's Been Borrowed

Chapter Text

 “Are you okay?”

Percy asks her, for the third time since morning. At least her neighbor seems to care for her. None of them in her household does. Her own father was neglectful, and god knows her step mother has always made her feel like she’s the odd one out of the family, in which she probably is, seeing as she’s the bastard, after all. No one should be treated with so much hatred, just as they treat her.

She’s not even going to be surprised if the bitch convinces her father to make her move out, seeing as she turned eighteen a year ago, and a whole person of her own. However, Annabeth doesn’t have much on her name. Even after having a stellar grade in high school, working part time in a small shop near her supposed college, she still couldn’t pay rent that’s costing a thousand dollar, a bill that’s less but still a fraction of her expenses, her monthly food, all while having to go to college that’ll take tens of hours in a single day.

She might have had it all figured out, the numbers, but it’ll take her another year or two to fully be independent on her own. Annabeth knew it would suck to live with them for that time, but she needed the roof to sleep, and a bit of her father’s money (truthfully speaking). It doesn’t mean she can’t complain though. She wasn’t even twenty yet, but the responsibility falls heavily on her shoulders.

“I’m…okay.” Annabeth bit her lip, trying to stop herself from feeling too much. It was nearing Christmas, and just as usual, before her father had to go on another trip to several parts of the united states, he’d given them a gift, except her.

“I’ll send you something once I return.” He says. “You know the kids, they can be disappointed.”

Every Christmas though, nothing at all.

And she’s no longer a child, yes, but the disappointment was bound to happen every time.

“No, you’re not.” Her neighbor simply stated. Percy Jackson holds a grocery in one hand, with the key to his apartment in the other. When he looked at her, it was always a kind look, like the one he’s giving now.

Whenever he’s in the apartment, he’d invite her over to help him bake (he bakes a lot), and he also gives her a lot of take outs if she wants. Annabeth always feels better with him, even though he works a lot and sleeps for approximately four days total in his apartment every week. He’s also handed her the keys if she wanted to sleep in while he’s gone, seeing as her family sometimes can’t get accustomed to her in the house. Helen was a bitch, and when her father’s gone, her true colors kicked in.

And Percy isn’t new to this. He first saw her in the hallway locked outside because she had to do her project in a library until late evening. He had the decency to ask why she’s there in the first place, knock for her, until no response was received. He’d been kind enough to let her in his home if she’s comfortable to sleep, and sure it’s only months since Percy moved in her floor, but by far he’s the kindest of them all.

“You can sleep in, if you want.” Percy had told her. “I had Helen’s number here somewhere. She’s the one who works for a law firm, right? You can borrow my phone to call or message her. Here take my keys. I’ll sleep in my car.”

And sure it was sweet of him, but Annabeth didn’t trust him just yet. But now, after almost half a year of living next to him, she’d take his apartment than hers any day.

“Come in, I’ll make you something you like.” Percy grins. “Do you still love that homemade carbonara, the one with bacon and Guan…something?”

She was at the verge of breaking down, but as usual, he’s the one making her laugh.

“It’s Guanciale.” She rolled her eyes.

“Man, i’m not from Europe.” He chuckles. “Guanciale, Guanciallo, Baguette, Bagel. Everything’s the same at this point. Do you want to help me cook?”

It didn’t take them long to get done with, with only a couple ingredients in store, and a satisfied Annabeth stirring the sauce while Percy boils the pasta. Now she was no expert, but he insisted she learn until she can get by on herself, as he knew she wanted to leave early. He’s been nothing but supportive of her, and Annabeth can’t even repay his kindness, as he insisted on doing so.

“Why are you so kind to me?” She asked him for the first time that night.

As usual, he didn’t say much, just shrugged, laughed it off and said “because”.

She punches his arm playfully. “Because what?”

“I don’t know, jeez.” Percy rolled his eyes at her. “Can’t I invite a friend to eat carbonara with me now?”

That did satisfy her, seeing as he thinks of her as a friend. And although sure, he’s a little annoying, but he’s never done anything for the past six months to break her trust. Add the fact that he’s cute, very attractive even, and although he might see her only as a younger sister, Annabeth can’t help but to have a crush on him.

He’s twenty two years old (twenty three in two months), and Annabeth would turn twenty within a month, meaning a three year age gap that is so painfully blatant on her part. She's in college, he just graduated and worked. He takes care of her, he asks her to come over if she wants food, and god knows Percy never did anything that she wasn’t comfortable with, even in times that Annabeth did admit at the slightest her attraction to him, he’s painfully obtuse of it.

Who wouldn’t want him?

But Annabeth had kept that to herself, when he’s across the hall saying good night to her and smiling like a fool. Annabeth thinks she’s never seen a more attractive man.

“Good night, Chase.” He brought the food they cooked some time ago. “If you need anything, I'm down the hall, alright?”

And with that he left.

It didn’t take months until Helen had officially kicked her out. It’s funny, Annabeth was expecting that, sure, but it was so abrupt it had dawned on her just when the door closed a few inches from her face. It was another feud again, and Helen had told her that maybe she should be grateful for the roof she’s given, as she was a bastard and all. Annabeth told her to fuck off, and of course, it was very inappropriate, but it left a good taste on her mouth. She wasn’t the kind to be rude to someone older, unless that person was actively seeking for her downfall, then she’d gladly do so.

Her clothes were sprawled on the corridor, but the neighbors didn’t seem to mind at all. No one even tried to look outside when her things crashed, but Percy. It’s always Percy who cares.

“Hey,” Percy opened his door. “Another one?”

“It’s real this time.” Annabeth mutters. “I don’t want anything to do with them.”

“Do you have someone to stay with?” Percy bit his lip, and Annabeth could only shrug, as if her own household hadn’t thrown her away just a few minutes ago.

“Do you want to stay with me?” Percy asked, and Annabeth couldn't help but to look him in the eyes for a second, then averted her gaze just the same. She felt like he’s been giving too much for his own good, too much so he’s willing to share his home to her whenever she needed.

“I can get my own apartment. I’ll have to make do.” Annabeth says, but she knows everything is against her at this point, and the comfort of Percy’s home feels like a bliss.

“Alright,” Percy nodded. “But at least tell me what I can do, okay? You can crash in anytime until you’ve got your own place.”

 She nodded. “Thank you, Percy.”

 He grins. “No worries but…”

“But what?” Annabeth asked. “Do i bother you, It’s really okay if-”

“No, no. God, no. It’s just that I signed my two weeks notice, and I’m given a unit from the place I work for.” He shrugs. “I’ll only be here by then.”

 “Oh.”

Annabeth was heartbroken. She didn’t know what emotion to deal with, and most importantly, how can she let herself be attached to Percy only for him to say he's moving away for his work. Sure, they were friends as far as friends go. She knew Percy and his childhood, all the way to his late mother, and his father who he sees seldom in a year. He talked about his life, how he wanted to be a marine biologist but his father asked him to take finance so he can work for his company, how he made a good pay in months because he's lucky enough to get employed, and how he's a subject of nepotism, but he couldn't do anything about it, since money matters and without it he'll be dead in the ditch somewhere. He does have friends, but Annabeth was sure he overworks himself all the time, seeing as he wanted for everyone to know he's worth it.

Somehow she kept thinking of that when she spent the night at his place. Helen wouldn’t care at all, but once her dad finds out, she’d probably just take her back, and make her suffer from abuse all over again. Her dad wasn’t always home, and wouldn’t be for the next few weeks, so to speak, Helen wouldn’t actually try to take her in until a few weeks later.

“But you can stay here, as long as you like, until I’m here.” Percy bit his lip. “Alright?”

 “Yeah, that’s really…I can’t thank you enough.”

In truth, she was a prideful person. Her high school years were easy enough that she understood every lesson, but somehow as a kid she’s always had too much pride on her own. Growing up, she can’t remember asking Helen or her dad for help, it always inconvenienced her. And now, she was receiving the help of someone who was once a stranger until months ago, and sure it might dampen her pride, but somehow she felt comfortable in doing so.

Once her things were packed in his apartment, with the rest of her clothes in a case, she settled to cook for him, but he was already doing it for her. His apron hangs low, a spatula in a hand, and a pan on the other, cooking another Italian recipe. Somehow those were always his favorite dishes. She’d basically have to memorize Italian dishes she wasn’t exactly fond of in the first place, but Percy liked it so much she realized she didn’t care.

“What’s today’s menu?”

“Lasagna.” Percy beamed. “Figured you don’t deserve too much take outs. This one’s taught by my mom.”

“Must be good then.” Annabeth smiled.

“You hurt me.”

But Percy was way too occupied to look at her, and he’s already mixing the sauce then pouring it on the pan. She knew just how much he liked lasagna, and she too likes it, but making it was an obsession to Percy, which is weird, considering he’s not even Italian.

She didn't know that was the start of it all.

For weeks Annabeth had been staying in his apartment, which is a few doors away from hers, she noticed the difference of the ambience. Hers was cold, with no love, not anything, not even her graduation picture hanging up. Pictures of Bobby and Matthew were scattered on the walls of the living room, but there’s not a trace that she lived there for years. The last pic her dad hung up was her graduation picture from high school, and she had to admit she looked lovely there, but not even a week after “ someone broke the frame and we can’t fix it anymore ” which is just a bullshit reason of her step mother to completely rid of her from her walls.

Two weeks hit her so fast she forgot that Percy was moving out, much to her great dismay, and Annabeth will have to face her loving step mother again. Her dad will be home soon too, which will make it a little bit bearable, but the thought of having to spend another day in that house leaves her stomach aching with dread. She’d rather be on the streets, but sadly, there’s nothing there for her.

Percy picked up his work bag and looked at her, in her sweater and a shirt she’d already worn last week.

 “Ready?” She nodded.

He didn’t mind driving her to the university, since it was only a twenty minute drive, and it’s halfway to his work anyway, and Annabeth enjoyed his company.

Percy is something else. Sure, she’d always had a crush on him, but it was the fear that she wouldn’t see him anymore that suppressed her from thinking about it. It’ll be two days before he goes, and just the thought of not having pancakes made by him for breakfast saddens her a lot. He gave up his bed to sleep on the couch so she’d be comfortable, made her breakfast and treated her like family. The thought of seeing Percy everyday made her feel giddy - like having a goddamn crush with her own roommate.

Having a crush on her roommate. It made her feel stupid, and it’s not usually her to make stupid decisions.

 “Percy?”

He was driving a black Civic which was given by his dad. He didn’t want to say anything about him, it was rather a sensitive subject, but he says it was the most helpful he’s been with him after ditching them for almost eighteen years.

 “Yes?”

“Where…would you live?” She wanted to ask for so long.

“Twin Lakes tower at Madison avenue. “ Percy said. “32nd floor, I think. I didn’t want to, actually, but…Well, my dad wanted me to work for him, I needed the cash, and…yeah. I got my own unit paid for.”

When Annabeth didn’t say anything, Percy looked at her with sad eyes. “I know. Nepotism, huh? I know I don’t deserve it, really. I rejected it but, It’s all accounted for in my name. And I figured, I’d rather live there than pay 1500 dollars for rent in a shitty apartment.”

“No.” Annabeth simply said. “You deserve that. A lot. Your dad was MIA for eighteen years and only had the nerve to ring you up when your mom…”

 Annabeth stopped.

“Yeah.” Percy simply said. “I’m sorry I have to leave. If I had my way, I’d take you with me.”

Annabeth thought of it. But how could she? She’s asked enough. Everything she needs, Percy had given her- the food, the shelter, blankets and a warm bed and most of all: comfort. That’s all she’s ever needed, and he gave it to her, undoubtedly. Her step mom asked her a few days back (and by “ask” means being offended  as to why Annabeth hasn’t gone home to live with a man she barely knew). She has reasons to be, Percy is a man. But still, said man had gone so far as to buy her medicine and take her to university everyday. Said man also has respected her boundary and Annabeth knew somehow Percy only sees her as some friend to be taken care of. She’s nineteen, he’s twenty two. He knows that.

She knew her infatuation was one sided, anyway, but her step mom wouldn’t care about it. By god, she’d probably involve poor Percy too and spread rumors that she’s been kidnapped or something, just so she can reason out Annabeth leaving the house in front of her father. She’s a maniac, is what she is.

There’s a ringing in her head that she can’t stop hearing, a jolt in reality, that Percy was right beside her.

 “Then take me with you.”

 Percy couldn’t answer her.

He looked at her, then down the road, steering the wheel with one of his hands. He looks attractive with the sun hitting his eyes, showing the green. On some nights it changes to a dark shade of teal, but now it’s a good green. Annabeth’s heart was racing at this point, and she was looking at him, and for a moment his eyes met hers and he scrunched  his eyebrows in hesitation.

He didn’t say anything for the whole ride.

Not until it stopped, and Annabeth had to get out.

“Annabeth…what you’re asking is…”

She was about to unlock the door, when Percy began to explain.

“I know, Percy. It’s alright. It was too much of me.”

It was the first time Percy held her arm, to stop her from opening the car.

“It’s not, it’s not about that.” Percy sighs. “Things are a bit more complicated…than that.”

“Then what is it?” She still asked, although she knew in her heart he was right. Her abusive step mother would put the dirt on her and Percy and say shit she didn’t want to know just to prove to her father that it wasn’t her fault. She can always come up with a lie that she’ll live with a college roommate, or a friend, but being the bitch that she is, Helen might press her on things just for her father to spite her.

Worst case scenario? Percy getting involved or investigated without proof and Helen putting up a case on him that’s downright unreasonable. Annabeth didn’t want to think about that, but Percy knows.

“You know it.” He says. "You're smart, Annabeth."

She couldn't say anything for a long time. He wasn't waiting for her reply, but he locked eyes with her as if getting her to understand that if he wasn't a man, he'd gladly take her with him then and there, but it's always about what people would think.

"Okay." Annabeth bit her lip. "I know, I know…I was just desperate."

 "You'll be late for class-"

Too many things Annabeth wanted to say, and too many things came blurting out of her mind as if finally being free from her thoughts.

"But…if somehow you changed your mind…I swear I'd be good, Percy. I'd work so I can buy my expenses, I'll help with the bills, I'll help with groceries, I can be on the couch too. I wouldn't mind. You wouldn't have to worry about me."

"I would worry about you." Percy started turning on the engine. He smiles. "You're my best friend."

The word should've made her smile. It was the first time he's said that to her.

It only hurts.

She didn't press on it, Percy decided for himself, and she sounded desperate, sure, but Percy was the only family she had for so long and he's leaving her. He treated her like he's known her for so long, and Annabeth doesn't even know how to pay him for everything he did.

Maybe Percy wanted to stop helping her, but that was completely valid. He spent enough for her staying for a few weeks in his apartment. Hell, he spent a few hundred dollars for their grocery alone, and although Annabeth had wanted to repay him with the money she had, he didn't let her for once. If he wanted to go and focus on himself, leaving the responsibility of taking care of her,  that's completely okay. Why would he even agree to let her be with him? Annabeth realizes he can't just adopt a college kid at twenty two years old.

It was until a few days after when Percy's already talking to the landlord that it hit her.

  He's actually leaving.

She wouldn't see him again, and it made her want to cry. He's been such a big help, and for only months of knowing him, he's made a big impact on her unlike everyone else. But she knew he had to do this and it's okay, as long as he's happy. Because it's Percy, and Annabeth never had a crush on anyone as much as she's had a crush on him.

The goodbye part was hard, but she never cried in front of him, and she won't now. Even though Annabeth's always been a sensitive person, she had a habit of not making it seen. Or noticeable, at least.

But her eyes feel dry and red.

He asked if she wanted a hug, she did for a few short seconds, and he was patting her back as if not knowing what to do. Even when hugging, he was careful with her boundaries.

And with a quick goodbye and a short sad smile, he was gone.

Annabeth wished the following days were easy. Percy wanted to help her list out a few apartments near the campus with no luck, and all the dorms were filled, which means she'd have to stay with her family for a while. That, or being out in the street (which sounded tempting but unreasonable). Still, one more day with her step mom or she'd have surrendered herself to a mental institute.

The first thing Helen did when she saw Annabeth was look at her up and down.

"Done whoring around with your neighbor?" She raises an eyebrow, and Annabeth all but wanted to punch the living shit out of her.

"Congrats. You're not the only whore in the house anymore." Annabeth speaks, and Helen looks at her with disdain like she couldn't believe she'd had the decency to speak to her. Before anything else came up, she was out and lying on her bed, looking at the pile of clothes and junk and realizing it had been turned into a storage room. She once heard her estranged step mother ask her father if he can turn Annabeth's room to Matthew's, since the boy was growing up. Annabeth's father was hesitant of course, but Helen had every reason to now.

There was a knock on her door.

"Really, Annabeth? Right in front of the children?" She was saying. "Do you even think about what you're doing?! I'm telling your father."

"Tell him what?" Annabeth shouted. "That you evicted me from my own home?"

"That didn't stop you from whoring with that boy! You're only eighteen!"

"Twenty." She whispered to herself. "I turned twenty four days ago."

She remembered Percy baking her first birthday cake for years, a blue one, with chocolate lemon filling just what she loved. He remembered. Unlike anyone else in her family, unlike her dad who hadn't spoken to her for months.

"I could have him in jail, so speak to me again in that tone, or so help me."

She couldn't speak anymore, not even when she wanted to. Not even an hour has gone by and she wanted to leave, pack all her bags and roam the street, probably live there too. If her dad was here, he'd have sided with Helen. He wouldn't listen to her side. Hell, he'd think his Annabeth is only twelve.

Exactly two weeks after that, the day her dad settled in, she realizes that it's only ever going to be this way. There was no love in her family.

He looked at Annabeth, nodded, and went back to his study as if not wanting to see her for another month. There was no gift for Christmas, probably forgotten too, but she didn't ask much anyway, even if Bobby and Matthew got their play station and some pricey toys they've always wanted. Annabeth just wanted him to listen, to attend to her like a father attends to her daughter, to say he's proud…or something.

It was the barest of the bare minimum.

He knew about her situation because Helen had told him beforehand. He didn't even ask if it was true, he just said he was disappointed too much and she could do better.

"That's not even half true." She had said. "He was good to me. He treated me like a family. Like an actual family you couldn't give."

She was too mad, but she knew that she was right.

 "You're only a child."

"Only a child when you left me with her!" She shouted. "Alone, without anyone else. And you left me with her? You're gone for months, remember? I'm not even twelve…I'm twenty now. In fucking college, dad. I'm not your little girl."

Annabeth never cursed in front of her father, but she didn't regret it one bit.

"If that man ever comes close to you again, I'll have Helen take care of him. That's what he's doing to you? Have some respect."

And that was it.

That was it. It was the actual start of everything, and it was Annabeth's actual breaking point for leaving her own house and never coming back.

She was never one to make an impulsive decision. She was always careful, and smart, and even when she decided to stay with Percy she had enough money to last her for weeks. Now though, half of it is gone, and because they're in New York, She wouldn't even be accepted in a six hundred dollar apartment. Best she could do was to stay at a cheap hotel, hoping to get a job within, say, a week. Then…and then what?

 Annabeth cried in silence.

Tears came out unwillingly while she's packing her suitcase, and getting a carry on, not knowing exactly where to go, but hoping to last for the night.

She hoped the note that says "Don't go looking for me. Never coming back." is enough for them not to search for her anyway. But seeing as things don't go the way she plans it, she might as well end up in the street with zero dollars to her name.

The thought was so depressing, it made her stop in her tracks.

She took one look at the house she's lived in for years, quiet and cold, the only light coming from the end of the hall- her dad's study room.

 "Here goes nothing."

She was expecting that to be fair.

The coffee shops were available, oddly at two am near Brooke's. But this was New York, she remembers. The city that never sleeps, not even at two in the goddamn morning. Annabeth can still see a couple of shops from downtown that's available, some of them her favorite Chinese restaurants, thai and sushi place. She opted for a ramen corner store that's about two miles away from her home. Her plan was to stay awake until morning to see the local newspaper and advertisement, or look online and hopefully see hotels that check in at 2 pm. Till then, a good ramen and coffee can keep her up and let her plan. She'd rather plan everything anyway than to sleep for a few more hours.

It was a Saturday, so she figured she didn't have to worry about classes since the only two classes she had were canceled earlier that week. The perfect time to go job hunting, and hopefully get one even if it's for part time hours.

Annabeth (2:37 AM): Are you up?

 Percy (6:50 AM): y

 Percy (6:51 AM): es

Percy (6: 54 AM): my alarm woke me up it's saturday

  She smiles.

Annabeth (6:55 AM): Guess what?

Percy (6:55 AM): you win the lottery yet

Annabeth (6:56 AM) No, but I ran away lmao

Within exactly three minutes, Percy was calling her. She figured he was brushing his teeth or something, or maybe making breakfast by now. Who knows? That boy is a morning person through and through.

"Hi, Percy." Annabeth said from the phone.

"Annabeth," Percy sounds out of breath. "Why didn't you call me?"

The last sentence felt like a whisper, as if he was in an elevator or an enclosed space. The lobby music can be heard from the background.

"You were sleeping, first of all." She rolled her eyes. "What are you doing right now?"

"Looking for my car in this goddamn parking lot." Even when he's half cursing, his tone was never harsh. "There's far too many black sedans. I'd honestly prefer our old beat up blue prius before."

Annabeth looked at the barista that was making her second cup of coffee for the day. She wondered if she should have had iced, so she would be able to drink it for long since it's cold at dawn. The way Percy speaks made her feel giddy, and…that god damn morning voice.

But still, Annabeth was more concerned about what he's doing.

"You don't have to get me. I have a plan." She can imagine Percy knowing she's rolling her eyes at him.

"I know." It sounds as if Percy was locking the door. "I know that. I just wanted to be there."

 "Right."

“Right.” Percy mutters back, probably driving by now by the sound of it. He’s always been stubborn, but she didn’t mind. It was actually a breath of fresh air that for once he’s equally as reliant on her like she is to him. Percy looks after himself just well, but sometimes he’s craving her attention even if he can’t admit it to her.

It took him minutes to realize what’s happening.

“Chase.”

“Yeah?” Annabeth whispers by the phone.

“I…I’ve been driving for five minutes and I only realize I don’t know where you are.”

“You couldn’t resist my charms, huh?” Annabeth muttered while Percy was helping her with her luggage. “I told you, Percy. I can do it. I’ve got things sorted out. It’s okay, you don’t have to help me all the time, you know?”

Percy’s eyes were on her, which wasn’t new but today he’s acting strange, as if he was responsible for her whole existence. Whatever it might be, she just wished he didn’t think of her as a younger sister who needed some guidance in life, because for some reason that would bum the fuck out of her. It’s not like she needed it too, because as impulsive as she is in his eyes, Annabeth knew herself well- she wouldn’t be impulsive if the risk is too high to make the jump.

And he of all people should know that.

His apartment now looks way better, she notices. High off the ground, a good view of the sunset and central park, glass walls and a balcony with a synthetic grass floor. A spacious living room with pre-built interior designs, his own kitchen column (which was the only area that doesn’t look untouched), and at the end of the living room connects a hall with a room on each side.

Percy opened the fridge to give her water.

“I know what it’s like to beg people to take me in.” Percy whispers softly. “I guess…I just don’t want you feeling the same. If I can. I know you can handle yourself well, and heck you’d kick my ass if I want to interfere with your plan-“

“Hell, I’d kick your ass right now.”

“-but let me just do this, so I can have some peace of mind?” Percy looks as if he’s actually questioning himself at the moment.

“That’s sweet of you.” Annabeth pursed her lips. “But I want to have an agreement.”

“About what?”

“That you wouldn’t feel the need to pay for my expense. I’d look for a job, I’d also pay for our bills, I’d rent this apartment even though you own it, buy my groceries until the time where I can move out.”

Percy looked at her as if wanting to debate, but he knew he shouldn’t mess with Annabeth if he wanted to take her in for the time being. Percy knew Annabeth wanted to take care of herself and she most especially doesn’t need a man doing it for her.

“That’s unfair.”

Annabeth rolled her eyes. It was worth a shot, but she’s almost always sure he was going to disagree one way or another.

“I don’t pay rent.” He crossed his arms, raising an eyebrow. “So you won’t pay rent.”

“Well, it’s for maintenance.” Annabeth was adamant. “I’ll give you my rent so you can pay for repair if there’s any damage-“

“The house is insured. And I think I can fix a cabinet or sink if I can.”

“You’re equally as stubborn as I am.” Annabeth wanted to reason out, but he was having none of it. Come to think of it, If Annabeth lived here for a few days she’s probably spent roughly a thousand or so. “Come on, Percy. Agree with me for once.”

“No.” Percy cleared. “And if you try to convince me otherwise I’ll pull off the I’m older than you card.”

“By two years.” Annabeth threw the nearest thing she could find, which was the shirt on his couch.

“Three, actually.” He grins.

“Which isn’t a big deal.” Annabeth muttered. She hated that card. God knows she doesn’t know why, but whenever she realizes Percy’s older than her and might only treat her as a sister, her mood’s instantly ruined by the end of it. “What’s the difference, anyway?”

Percy must have felt her mood change, because he didn’t pry on it, taking her luggage from the seat in silence. Annabeth looked at him and he knew she was tired on instant, and thanked the gods for Percy actually seeing through her.

“Let me show you to your room, okay?”

She couldn’t even think about what room it was, the next thing she knew her body was hitting the bed, whichever bed it belonged to (hopefully Percy’s because his bed always smelled of the ocean) and drifted into slumber.

The week after sees Annabeth in a very unpleasant situation. Her classes ended around 2 in the afternoon, and wouldn’t resume until 5. Her professor loved her work, so she didn’t feel the need to work twice as hard for the subject and seeing as Piper won’t be out until three, she made her way to the Cafe on their campus and started clearing her schedule while waiting for said girl. The cafe wasn’t exactly packed, but you can still hear the voices of students trying to do their respective school activities. She heard one muttering about dropping a subject, some trying to type in their laptops like she does, and some watching either netflix or lectures on their phones. Her eyes fixate on the screen as she looks for a student assistant job for her college. There was one in her department which pays twenty five dollars an hour for four hours each day, which to her is a good deal if she wants to contribute anything to Percy. She’s been living with him for a total of a month and yet he never once made it hard for her to have a guy for a roommate.

“Annabeth Chase?” She all but looked up at the sound of a guy looking at her.

“Sorry, seat’s taken.” She muttered, submitting her cv.

“Annabeth Chase, daughter of Frederick?”

That seemed to draw her attention as two men stood up before her. They looked casual enough, no gun, or uniform but only a badge that says NYPD, which was a surprise.

“Uhm, may I help you?”

The students were mostly unbothered by their presence, seeing as when she looked around no one ever dared bat an eye on her.

“Yes ma’am. I’m Jeffrey Williamson and this is my partner Frank Conner of NYPD. We just have some questions, and we’d like you to come to your ‘shared’ apartment with Mr. Percy Jackson. Is that right?”

“I’m sorry what’s this about? I have the right to not share any information with regards to the matter unless I know why you’re here.” Annabeth asked, closing her laptop and bringing out her phone to call Percy. “Is Percy okay?”

The two guys looked at each other in confusion, as if drinking the fact that she just asked how Percy Jackson is. The first man, Williamson, sat in front of her, clearing the tissue on her table. He looked mildly concerned too, which technically was their job. She hated police officers and the way they’d go all the way for you to be uncomfortable.

“There was a report.” He started, showing his ID and sliding it so Annabeth can see. “That Mr. Percy Jackson kidnapped you and took you to his place a week ago, early in the morning.”

“What?” Annabeth raised her eyebrow, looking at both of them. She can tell by the look of Frank Conner that he was genuinely not interested in their conversation. “I’m sorry there must be a misunderstanding, because Percy didn’t kidnap me.”

“We can see that for now, but Ms. Helen Chase was adamant to bring her daughter-”

“She’s not my mom.” Annabeth stated, cutting him off. “And as you can see, right now, I will have to head to class alive and safe, therefore ending this discussion.”

She stood up so quickly she nearly forgot her reading glasses.

“Annabeth,” Williamson answered. ”We are currently investigating Mr. Jackson right now, at his home, I would like you to come with us, this will all be over soon if you comply with us, we just have a few more questions.”

That caught her attention to the brim. “What did you do to him? Is Helen with you?”

Williams looked up from where he was seated, tapping his ID and badge on the table and waiting for her to make a decision. She knew she had to call Percy first, see if anyone was bothering him at least. He’s sacrificed enough and now that god damn woman is bothering him again, accusing him of things he never did. “Annabeth…Can I call you that?”

She didn’t answer.

“Look, kid. This is as much time wasted on us as it is on yours. You can call your man right now and settle this with him, and your mom. She stated that you’re being groomed by an adult man and kidnapped and forced to live with him. Settle it with her now.”

“That’s fucking absurd.” Annabeth half- whispered. “I wasn’t kidnapped…or groomed.”

She had wanted to curse at her step mother that time. “Percy is my friend and I live with him because I want to.”

“Yes, but that’s not how your mother sees it.”

“For the last time? She’s not my mother.”

The officer glanced at her phone as if wanting to make her see that she needed to call them, or Percy rather. For all she knows, Percy’s in his home right now, arguing with the police to leave him alone, but knowing him- the actual him, he wouldn’t say anything offensive in case Helen was forcing him to.

“I wasn’t kidnapped either. I’m twenty.”

“Yes, you turned nineteen some time ago. But you know Mr. Jackson two years ago.”

That confused her even more. “No, I haven't known him for two years. We’ve only been friends for months.”

Finally, the other man, the one whose name was Conner looked at her as if listening to her reason. “See, Mr. Jackson lived in the building for around two years, and two years ago, you were only turning eighteen, meaning you were not of legal age.”

“Percy lived in a second floor apartment for more than a year until he got transferred near our apartment a floor up. I haven’t even seen him since months ago.” Annabeth stated her reason, which was true to be fair. Percy lived a floor below them, meaning she hadn't even interacted with him at some point that time- much less seen him. He was out almost everyday for work too, only getting home around midnight so there was no way Annabeth would have known him or care. Knowing Helen, she’d still use that as an excuse for Annabeth to leave the guy alone.

Both of them looked at her. “Helen said you knew him for more than a year.”

“That’s because Helen is a liar.” She muttered.

She missed her class that day going back home where she finds Percy being interviewed by two ununiformed men, and sure enough there was Helen, looking at him with disdain. It was also a shock that it seemed as if Helen had acquired them a warrant for his home, seeing as these people won’t back out and one of them was even opening her room as if looking for something.

Then there was Percy, with his work clothes, probably just got out of work, rushed to get here. It was so unfair for Percy to be here in this situation- he only wanted to help and yet here he is, caught up in between their mess again. Maybe it’s time for her to leave him alone, but then again, he promised he wanted to help as much as he could.

“I knew her for about seven months now, maybe eight.” Percy looked at the two police in civilian clothing. “Look, I don’t know where you got your warrant, but please, no shoes on the carpet?”

That was Percy. Even when he was brooding somehow he looked good in it.

“And you are aware that Miss Annabeth Chase is twenty years old.”

Percy nodded. “Yes. We just celebrated her birthday some week ago. July 12. I met her sometime around Christmas, her step mother kicked her out, I asked her if she’s okay but I didn’t press on it. Saw her in the hallway a couple of times once getting back from my work, told her she can have my apartment and text Helen about it, cause I would be gone for a few days. That’s what I can remember, but you can ask her.”

“In which she was nineteen at that time?”

She can see Percy almost rolling his eyes at the man. It felt as though he was losing every bit of patience he had on him, just because the guy asked the most stupid question he could muster.

“Yes, she was nineteen at that time. I was twenty two.”

“Alright, we have the information necessary for our investigation,” One of them finished, closing his journal.

At the same time, Conner and Williams were at her door, looking at the said commotion. Percy looked as dejected as ever, but when he sees Annabeth, she can tell he's trying not to look like he failed.

"Can you leave us now?" Annabeth muttered. "So I can enjoy my solitude?"

"Ms. Chase, your step mother is a fearsome woman. She knows her law, and she will use it at her advantage. There's no surveillance in your apartment, so it's hard to tell the truth. As for the request of Helen, I'd have you tested. As per Mr. Jackson here, he might be put on trial in the future, but who knows? The odds are against him though. Grooming is not necessarily an illegal activity as it is unless sexually acted upon, but there are laws apprehending it, along with kidnapping. You know Helen better than anyone here, I suggest not to take the trial and let her file a restraining order for Percy on your behalf."

"That fu-" Annabeth wanted to scream on top of her lungs. "I guess I'll just have to find a lawyer then. No big deal. Is my testimony not enough?"

"It depends on the judge, mostly. But that's the worst case scenario."

Or the only scenario. Annabeth knew just then that Helen, the woman that she is, will do everything to watch her world burn, and Annabeth wouldn't let that happen. She'd do everything within her power, and who knows, her jury might be with her in this case.

"A TRO." Percy looked at her, and then the retreating police in his door. He looked sad, as if he did something wrong and Annabeth wanted to reassure him, but she has a problem to solve before that.

"An immediate request for her won't work, I think." She muttered. "Not unless she did a crime, in which case she did not…yet. As long as it's within legality, we can't do that. Also, that will cost thousands of dollars. Even a court hearing will cost thousands of dollars alone. I know what she's doing, Percy. She wants to leave me bankrupt. This is a hate crime that's completely legal on her part."

Annabeth's brain was in overdrive. She wanted to think, but nothing's going. There has to be a way out of this situation that wouldn't involve laws and police, and court appeals like Helen wanted her to. As long as she convinces everyone she's right by then, she will be. The way Annabeth sees it, this was her own petty way of saying she had the last laugh too, and maybe a way to get Frederick to leave her out of his family for good.

A trap. It's a trap and she's finding a solution.

If she takes the bait, it'll cost her good money. If she files for Helen to leave her alone, it'll create a rift between her family for good, disappointing her father forever. If she ignored it, Helen would have made something out of it anyway, and that includes Percy in the worst possible scenario. If she lets her file for a restraining order on Percy, she clearly won completely. If she leave him alone, she'd have to look for an apartment and make do with what she got. Percy didn't deserve any of it. It felt like every situation, Helen always had to come on top.

"Percy?"

He might have noticed the disappointment in her eyes, cause softened looking at her.

"I'm really sorry." Annabeth bit her lips. "I shouldn't have-"

"Not your fault." Percy shrugged. "You need a better family."

"I'll look for a new apartment. Thank you for letting me stay here for a while. You're a good friend." She smiles at him, and Percy looked like he wanted to, but it was too small to consider a smile anyway.

"Do you want me to come with you?" Percy whispered.

She wanted to look at his eyes forever- a very noticeable green, with a hint of blue- something you wouldn't miss yards away. Was it a crush? She knew she had a crush on him, but she never thought of it too much. The thought only lasts for minutes and goes away, so she knows she's good for now.

"I'm late. I'm supposed to meet Piper, but I think she's still there." Annabeth looked at the clock.

"Alright." He adds.

"Alright."

There was silence after that. They both don't want to know the consequences of this. For Annabeth, she didn't want to leave Percy just yet. Even though interactions with him were limited and they treated each other as just roommates, she grew fond of him. He was very respectful of her privacy too.

"Do you want to come with me?" Annabeth asked.

Percy was thinking.

"Can I?" He asked back. "I'm dead hungry. The police searched through my laptop and asked if I had some porno. I think he's the fucking pervert here. How did they get a warrant? I don't even know. I feel like I wasted talking for hours."

"I'm really sorry, Percy. I really am. You don't deserve this…being involved in issues with me and my family."

"I'm your friend." He bumped her arm. "I don't really care. I'd gladly help you with court appeals if I could too. I don't really want much in life, so money isn't an issue for me. Just tell me, alright?"

"You've helped enough."

Annabeth didn’t know what to do. The silence was heavy enough as it is. Annabeth felt like there was a building tension in between them- something she doesn’t want to address, but definitely concerning. What does Percy feel? What does he think of all of this mayhem? He was being accused of kidnapping, something he won’t ever do. A part of Annabeth thinks that Percy’s ashamed of how things escalated. After all, if Annabeth was accused of the same thing, even though she’s not guilty, she will still feel the weight of dread.

Annabeth wanted to reassure him. She starts going after his arm, thinking she can hold it while reassuring him that nothing’s wrong, but he pulls away just as quickly.

“It’s okay.” Percy mutters. “I’m alright.”

“Okay.”

As expected, Piper McLean was still in their seat at the coffee shop. When she sees them, especially Percy towing in behind her, she lets out a small smirk and Annabeth wants nothing more than to strangle her. It was the first time she’ll introduce Percy, but honestly Piper has no awareness of privacy on her and takes pictures using her phone, seeing her gallery that may or may not contain lots of pictures of him. She can still remember her seeing him for the first time, saying he looks cute in his pajamas and sweater while drinking coffee, hair disheveled as ever. “Hey,” Annabeth slid down on the seat in front of her, Percy following her close. “What’s up?”

“Thought you were in class.” Piper addressed before glancing at Percy. “Hi Percy.”

Percy looked at Annabeth, obviously confused. “Uh, hi. I take it Annabeth told you about me?”

“Oh not much. Only a lo-”

“Okay now enough.” She rolled her eyes. “I have a request, Pipes. I need to process some things.”

Percy sat beside her, which shouldn’t bother her at all, but now it’s starting to. He didn’t look awkward or out of place while they talked, and he listened intently too, but nonetheless very distracting. He even volunteered to order for them, while Annabeth rants her frustration.

“So yeah there’s that.” She finally says. “I can’t…think of anything as a solution for now. My dad…I don’t know him anymore so if I file for anything he’ll side with her. As easy as that. I don’t want to lose Percy. He’s been such a friend to me.”

“That’s a hard case.” Piper agrees. “Too many things to do equals too many things to pay. It’ll cost you thousands. Of course, there’s always a solution to that kind of problem. It’s just so weird, your step mom- a full grown adult lawyer, starts having beef with a twenty year old unemployed college kid.”

“To think of it that way.” Annabeth considers.

Percy slid next to her, handing her a plate of her favorite lemon cheesecake. Even without telling him, he’d simply known. That’s Percy for her, she thinks, he’s like a missing puzzle piece that’s just perfectly right in every way.

“I don’t know what you like, Piper.” He handed her the strawberry shortcake, “I figured this is the safest bet.”

“It’s perfect.” Piper smiled. “Anyway, I’m no lawyer just yet and my course is extremely far from what you guys are saying. So not much help here with those legal documents. But…I do have one simple solution.”

“And that’s…?” Percy raised an eyebrow.

“Uhm. One funny solution, but a solution anyway.” Piper started, looking as if she wanted to laugh. “Well, you guys are ‘best friends’ right? And you want to think of a solution for Helen to leave you alone. You, Percy, wants to help Annabeth from being abused by her step mother-”

“Don’t put it that way.” Annabeth mutters.

“-And you, Annabeth wants to stay with Percy, without getting him in the middle of your conflict with your family, and dissolve all investigations so your family will leave you guys alone for good.”

“I think that’s established, Pipes.”

“Meaning you guys just want everyone to leave you alone. In the most basic wording possible.”

Percy bit his lip. “I mean, yeah. I don’t want to lose Annabeth, she’s my friend. And I just feel like everything here has the same solution.”

Piper nodded. “Not everything. Basically, you guys just want to be in each other’s protection for a time.”

That was what made Annabeth sit upright, looking at Piper with eyes wide open. What was she thinking? That girl. Clearly, it doesn’t mean what she thinks it means, right? And suggesting that in front of Percy ? Absurd. She knew Annabeth had a crush on the guy, and she’s always teasing her, but really?

Annabeth looked at Percy to see if he gets what she’s saying, but handsome as he is Percy is a bit oblivious.

“Yeah,” It was Percy’s turn to look at Annabeth. “Like that. I help her with things because she’s my friend. Nothing more, so I wish people would stop assuming things like…me grooming or…kidnapping her. Now that just…hurts.”

Even saying that made Percy uncomfortable. She noticed the shift of his voice, lowering until the last sentence.

“I see.” Piper “I have no solution for that, sadly. But I do have a solution with the ‘leaving you guys alone bit.’”

And it made sense to Annabeth now. How it is a solution, but it wouldn’t work. It’s too ridiculous a thought anyway. Here’s Piper suggesting something so comical, and there was Percy, just wanting to get through. Everything that’s gonna come out of her mouth is literally everything Percy wanted to get rid of.

“Well,” Piper sighs.

“No, Pipes.” Annabeth glared at her. “That’s-”

“Why don’t you two get married?”

Percy almost choked in his coffee.

“Uh,” He started. Annabeth closed her eyes in confusion and embarrassment. It’s for sure there’s a lot more solution than getting fucking married, which was pretty permanent. I mean, not exactly permanent, but in a way, seems pretty stupid.

“After that, you get divorced. Not annulled. I can’t see any reason why they will grant you an annulment, but there’s always a no contest divorce, which will be effective after a year of marriage. Annabeth pays off roughly a few thousand dollars by the end of your marriage, and by few I mean, five or six? I have no idea. Then you’re done and good to go. Annabeth gets to stay in your home for as long as you want. Nobody’s gonna bother you guys as long as you’re in each other’s protection and everyone’s happy. No appeals, no random police dropping at your doorstep.”

“I feel like filing a restraining order will solve all your problems before any of that.” Percy suggested, looking at Annabeth for the first time.

“Filing a restraining order is done after hearing, Percy. You can’t just file easily. And it’ll cost you thousands of dollars too, just for the hearing alone.”

“So,” Annabeth bit her lip. “Either way, it’ll cost me thousands of dollars. Which I do not have currently.”

“Yes.” Piper shrugged. “If you don’t file immediately though, they'll file for you to leave Percy, and you’ll be homeless and doing two jobs while in college.”

“How is it that complicated?” Percy was in awe. “Why can’t just Helen leave her alone, you know, like a normal person?”

“I don’t know, Percy.” Annabeth wanted to hold his hand, propped on the table. “She just doesn't want me in the family anymore. She wants my dad to get rid of me. I mean, I’m a bastard and all that.”

“It’s not your fault though.” Piper guarantees. Annabeth knows that, but the way Helen treated her differently felt like it was.

It was nearing dinner when they finished, and Percy wanted to take both of them to a restaurant, not some Cafe. Piper insisted, saying she had a seven to nine pm class, and that was goodbye for both of them. Annabeth thinks of how easy it is to just get married to Percy- it would be too funny, but her stomach feels a little weird just thinking about it. It’s Percy, first of all. That guy who doesn’t ask for much, and can handle his own just fine without Annabeth, and then there’s she who has to live with him just so she can make do with paying her tuition and everything and getting jobs here and there.

Percy didn’t press her on the matter. He suggested they eat first, and talk about things later. He might have seen the tired look on her eyes, or he might have noticed Annabeth zoning out on the window too deep in thought. Either way, Percy suggested it’s his treat this time and he won’t accept otherwise.

“It’s been your treat for three straight weeks.” Annabeth rolled her eyes.

“That’s not true.” Percy contested. “I let you pay for my food.”

 “Yeah, a ten dollar subway.”

“Well, it’s your treat after this then. But I really wanted to try this place, my buddy recommended it and I’ve been meaning to go.”

They parked outside just a block ahead of the entrance, Flatiron always too busy and crowded for cars to park in the middle of New York. As they walked into the dimly lit dining room, they were greeted by the warm glow of flickering candles and the intoxicating aroma of roasted meats and fresh baked bread.

As they settled into their seats, Percy eagerly picked up the menu and began looking at the starters. He quickly settled on the grilled flatbread, Campanelle, and custard pie. Annabeth, on the other hand, was hesitant.  She scanned the menu nervously, trying to find something that she could actually afford, but then again Percy was paying. Percy has always been so good, too good in fact but she doesn’t want to abuse it.

She opted for a salad.

When Percy noticed her hesitation, he asked, "What do you want to order?"

Annabeth shrugged. "I don't know, Percy. I’ll go with a salad?"

She waited for his reply, but he pretended not to hear her. “Seafood platter, you liked seafood, right? And for the main, I think you’ll like this brick pressed chicken, and of course lemon cake for dessert.”

She rolled her eyes. “I’m not gonna eat. I ate earlier.”

“I’m not gonna eat here satisfied while you try a salad.” Percy sighs. “I swear next time I’ll let you treat me to something fancy, alright Chase?”

"It's okay, hey." Annabeth bit her lip. "Really. I'm kinda full. Maybe just the chicken and some seafood."

That seemed to satisfy him as he asked for a waiter. She thought about what Piper said earlier, about them marrying each other. There will be no unsettled issue hence not needing to advance things in court. They can divorce on the grounds of no fault, and a prenuptial agreement will settle everything, meaning to say only a minimal fee of around five thousand dollars. Being in New York and studying here, where the cheapest rent is almost a thousand dollars, it meant a lot to Annabeth. By the end of the year, if she had worked fairly well, she might have the chance to settle her divorce with Percy.

If he accepts. She thought.

It's ridiculous. Because he won't accept it. Annabeth knows him fairly well from the little time they knew each other. He doesn't have the same principle as she does. For Annabeth, marriage is just marriage and being married to him for a year won't change anything after it. For Percy, maybe he actually wants to get married only once for the love of his life, like normal people do.

Annabeth wasn't exactly in a normal situation.

"Are you thinking about…what Piper said?" She asked, because he looked deep in thought.

"There's gotta be another way." Percy scrunched. "I mean…there's no way your step mother hates you that much."

"Hard to believe." She shrugged. "If she filed you, I'd have nowhere to go and she knows it. If I filed her, I wouldn't see my family anymore and she'll make sure of that very, very, much. But these things Percy…it's my problem and you don't have to think about what Piper said. I'm lucky enough to have a place to stay and I don't ask for anything else."

She wanted to hug him, but Percy was smiling at her at the other side of the table. Annabeth wanted to cherish the moment. Sure, she's had crushes before here and there, but no one can make her stomach churn with anxiety and anticipation like Percy does. And he’s a friend, she’d like to think about that again and again for it to make sense. Everything about the guy makes her feel so dumb.

It was ten minutes later when the guy finally showed up, platter in one hand and deserts in another, and she enjoyed everything just as Percy had predicted. She thinks, maybe it’s meant to be this way forever.

But of course.

It was only a few weeks after when things started to take a turn for the better. Getting elective units in college meant that her schedule’s fairly different every day, meaning on Tuesdays to Thursdays, she’s out working as a student assistant and on Fridays until Sundays, a barista at a local coffee shop. It wasn’t so hard to say the least, because her time management was unmatched and she’s disciplined. Some things that are exactly what they’re looking for. Annabeth liked serving and being the cashier from time to time, greeting people at her shift which was around ten to six in the morning. It’s not so busy either, unlike afternoon shifts, which makes it a lot better. But then she needs sleep and needs to go to class during Monday morning and it specifically sucks for her. Percy was adamantly concerned, but she had to brush it off.

It was one time when she’s at her shift at 5 A.M, and every atom in her body wanted her to sleep, but she needed to take the subway and walk a few more blocks to go home to Percy’s apartment. She wanted to explode on the spot. Her books are sprawled under the counter, while she reads when there’s no customer, and half dozes off until Will (the angel that he is) lets her sleep for a couple of minutes.

It was Annabeth’s turn on the counter, and she’s labeling drinks when a guy comes in. She didn’t look up, still too busy writing. “Hello, welcome to La Caffe Latte, may I take your- Percy?”

"Hey," He smiles.

"What are you doing here?" She asked. She sees the guy every day, but he's been busy this weekend for work, so he's mostly in his room if he's not cooking him food.

"I want a coffee." He shrugs, "What's your safest option?"

"My go-to is an Iced Spanish Latte. For hot, I'll make you something special." Annabeth suggested which earned her a grin. Percy opted for the latter, adjusting his reading/ driving glasses he must have forgotten he's still wearing. Annabeth wasn't one to complain. He looks so good in the morning too, now only on his sweatpants and a hoodie which she wanted to steal someday.

"Are you here to take me home?" She asked when typing down his order (adamantly refusing when Annabeth said it's on the house).

"Yeah."

"Godsent." She mutters.

She personally gave him the order after a few minutes, with a free chocolate custard croissant which she hoped even tasted half as good as what he bakes. He was reading something and typing down on the excel, which Annabeth finds kinda boring, but looks hot when it's him. Or was it his glasses ?

"You look really tired, Chase." Percy noted. "I figured I can take you home."

"You don't have to. But you’re here, so thanks. I really appreciate it.”

He shrugs. He doesn’t say anything, but he did look at her for a good bit, which made Annabeth insecure for a little. Her blonde hair might have not looked washed, and maybe her skin looked dry and lifeless and Percy looking at her isn’t doing much good in her self esteem. Probably cause there are people who actually looked good in the morning and he’s one of them.

“What are you thinking?” She raises an eyebrow.

“I’m thinking…” He says. “Do you want to marry me?”
