Chapter 1: a fragmented place full of fragmented glass

Chapter Text

He walked through Sekai, looking at himself in the pieces of broken glass that covered the floor. He had found a fragment, a little piece of cristal as he walked trying to find somewhere silent.

Even though the Sekai was a silent place, you could hear the faint sound of a music box, a lullaby. Something he thought lost years ago, something of his own creation that he despised, something he wished had never existed. If that lullaby had been good enough, he would have been able to save her before, and she wouldn't be as lost as she is in this moment of her life.

He continued walking through the fragment of Sekai that was apparently untouched, it seemed like no one had been there before. His breath started slowing down, and the music became shuffled, barely hearable. His eyelids felt heavy, and he started wondering how many days had passed since he last ate. Two? Or maybe it was three… He could not remember, and due to his recent sleepiness, he made himself a spot between the glass shards that covered the floor, he got on the floor and curled himself up, using his long and silky hair as a blanket. He slowly closed his eyes, and fell asleep to a strange warmth that contrasted with the cold scenery of the place.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He woke up after a long sleep, he could not track how much time he was out, but he knew he was way more tired than before falling asleep. He could feel his head pressed against something warm, and he could hear someone mumbling something. He could feel that person’s hands softly brushing and braiding through his hair, making sure to not tangle it or pull it.

He tried to ask, but he was too tired to try and talk. So, he continued to listen to what they were singing, as that heavy and drowning feeling came back. This time, when he closed his eyes and fell asleep, he dreamed. He dreamed about the girl with the sad eyes smiling again, he dreamed about the girl that ran away with her brother sleeping somewhere safe, he dreamed about the person that felt ashamed of themselves and that didn’t feel comfortable enough to be their true selves. He also dreamed about himself, drowning in a black hole without a way to escape. Some people might be terrified of it, but he felt like he was finally embracing something he had been waiting for a long time.

He woke up crying. Tears fell silently through his face as he felt the person that was by his side hug him. He hid his face in his neck, melting into the comforting hug. The man started brushing his hair with his fingers again, trying to calm the small boy, who couldn’t stop crying. The strong grip of the man was warm, it was the same feeling he had when he hugged his father before he got hospitalized. That thought made him sob more. His cries were heartbreaking, so desperated and loud that it could have been heard from another place in Sekai. He started shaking as the man held him tighter like he was going to fade if he let him go.

They continued like this for a long amount of time, and the boy felt his eyelids become heavy again. As he closed his eyes, he felt the man’s arms holding him tighter, as if he was made of glass.

“I think I want to die…”, Kanade murmured, holding himself firmly to KAITO’s grip. “Please don’t go…”

Slowly, the image reflected onto the shattered glass changed to the one of a boy drifting into unconsciousness.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was the third meeting they had in the week and K was still missing. This was unusual, knowing that the boy loved the meetings as much as he loved instant ramen. The ambience was filled with preoccupation, no one knew what to do.

“He might be at Sekai”, suggested Ena, trying to stay positive, worry easily detectable in her voice.

“He could also be sleeping”, Mizuki added. “You know how he is, he works for 72 hours straight and then sleeps for 72 hours straight”

They continued to brainstorm about where the boy could be, and what he could be doing. With each new idea, Mafuyu’s bad feeling about the situation continued growing. Finally they decided to call it a day, as the members noticed that they were starting to freak out.

As she turned off her computer, she slowly drifted to bed, and started thinking about where the boy could be. ‘What if Kanade had locked himself in Sekai like she used to do? No, that would be impossible, the vocaloids would have noticed.’

She tried to get to sleep, but the mere idea of K locking himself in Sekai to disappear was haunting her. After hours of thinking and tormenting herself, her body finally gave out and she slowly fell asleep.

YUKI: Enanan, I know that you are in charge of our social media accounts. Please, make sure that our followers know that we are taking a break and that we will be back in a month or so. I’m going to Sekai to look for K. Something tells me he is hiding somewhere in there. Please, contact me if you find any information, I have a bad feeling about why he might have disappeared. Tell Mizuki that our meetings are canceled for two weeks.

As soon as she read Mafuyu’s message, she published and got their fans to know about their break, and texted Mizuki about it. Unlike other times where K had missed meetings, this time she was really worried.

As soon as he woke up, he started composing like a machine. If he worked the way he should, he could be doing 5 songs a day, and this way, he could find the melodies that could save people. And if he failed to keep up with that rhythm? No problem, that was what the blade he had was for.
