For the time being the only time they see each other was when finny was in his front yard and Robin was out on the sidewalk.
_____
The few who did get kisses were pecked on the forehead or cheek. His dad always kissed him on the mouth.
_____
The poor boy probably would have knocked his block off from how hard he was shaking his head "yes".He tried his best to slowly explain each problem that the boy was having. Whether it be order of operations or dreaded fractions. Billy found that the class went a lot faster when he actually got help. Before the two knew it the bell was already ringing.
Before he even gave it a second thought, Finney pulled out his phone and immediately asked Billy for his phone number. They exchanged phone numbers so that they can work more on this later.
_____
"Emergencies. Or if I have to clean up before coming to school." He said without giving it a second thought. The boy gave him a look that was a mix between concern and confusion. "I'm Griffin Stagg." The boy said after a moment of silence. "Oh, I'm Finney Shaw. Nice to meet you."
_____
Robin thought back to around the time that he and Finney met. They didn't have much to do at the time because Finney wasn't allowed outside of the fence but Robin wasn't allowed inside either. So most of their evening was passing a small baseball back and forth over the fence.
_____
"I gotta get going, sorry. See you both later!" The group said their goodbyes and Finney headed on to his house. Bruce looked toward Robin. "It's a shame he couldn't stay longer. His arm's mint."
_____
One time when Finney was around the age of nine, he snuck out one day. It's not like he left the yard, he just didn't let his dad know he was going outside. That night was rough. He was sent down to the basement almost immediately. He spent maybe a day and a half down there. It was hard to tell time because of how little sunlight actually got in there. His dad eventually came down there and wiped him with a belt. He must have had scars completely from his neck down.
_____
"Yeah. All I got was a slap on the wrist."Robin smiled, "Good, glad it wasn't anything major." He didn't really think about the fact that Finney wasn't good with sayings.
_____
"Are we" Finney paused and thought "acquaintances?"Billy looked at him and almost laughed. "If you wanted to be my friend, you could have just asked."
_____
The person walked up and went to the sink next to him. He got a glance out of his peripherals, it was the kid from art class. He must have been washing the paint off his hands too.The silence was interrupted by a question that confused Finney and made his blood run cold. "Are you suicidal?" The blonde guy asked him. Finney looked at the guy like he was stupid. "No, why?"
The boy eyed him up and down for a bit before finally pointing at his arms. "Oh," Finney laughed, which confused the boy even more "No, just got in trouble. Dads, am I right?"
He laughed once more but stopped when he realized the other boy wasn't laughing with him. The blonde guy sat there, looking very thoughtful, before he finally said something. "I'm Vance. What's your name?" It came out more as a demand than a question.
Finney felt himself shrink a little bit, nervous. "Finney." The boy looked at him. "I'm going to stick by you now." Finney was confused and slightly scared. Was this a threat? Was this supposed to be a bully? He'd only seen teen movies and the bullys there were honestly pathetic. All he did was nod at the other boy's statement.
_____
No one dwells on it as Robin tells a story about beating up Moose, occasionally breaking out in spanish only Finney knew. Vance exhales through his nose, staring at Finney for just a second too long. Bruce put his hand on Vance’s shoulder reassuringly.
_____
Bruce's brow furrowed. "Three? What would anyone need a three-year-old for?"Griffin frowned. "What was his name?"
Gwen barely hesitated before answering. "Finney Blake."
_____
Billy smirks. "Oh, so if I knew you before Robin, you would’ve given it to me?"Finney stares at him for a second, then looks at Robin, whose expression is unreadable. "I mean… I guess?"
Robin suddenly sits up straighter. "Wait- what?"
_____
Finney barely reacted. That was enough for Robin to follow his line of sight. In an instant, Robin’s casual stance shifted. His shoulders squared. He deliberately moved, placing himself between Finney and the stranger. His expression darkened, and he didn’t bother hiding the sharp look he shot the man’s way.
_____
“He's never shut me out before” he muttered to himself.
_____
Gwen folded her arms and tilted her head. “Kinda jealous, honestly. You guys seem cool. Like… movie kind of cool.”
