Work Text:
Ever since she could remember, Moroha heard stories of her mother’s time and the family she had beyond the well. A grandmother, great-grandfather, and uncle she’d never met before but her mother swore were quite real. When she asked about her grandfather, her mother’s smile faded a tiny bit only to return in a way that was less happy, and more… sad.
She would say that her father and grandmother passed away when she was little, and while it’d been awhile, she missed them and loved them as if it were yesterday. The sadness in her eyes, and the gentle way Moroha’s father tucked his arm around her back to pull her closer made it hard to ask anything more about them. But there was so much she wanted to know !
Her parents told her that while Shippō wasn’t her brother by blood, it was okay for her to call him “Shippō-niichan”. And she could tell that he liked it too. But there wasn’t much of her mother’s family or her father’s family in Shippō. Aside from the way he spoke to her, in that gentle firm tone when she was caught doing something. Or when he tossed her up and down like her father would, always careful to rein in his strength, since he was a full-fledged kitsune.
Or at least, growing into one.
But he wasn’t partly human. Not like she was. Not like her little brother would be.
And she knew, she just knew that the baby would be a boy.
She overheard her Aunt Sango talking to her mother, and how her mother thought she was convinced that it would be a boy because of her Uncle Sōta. Maybe she was right, just a little. Towa and Setsuna had eachother to play with when they were at home, and soon, they would have another sibling too. While Moroha only had Shippō, which was fine, until he was away for his exams for what felt like forever .
But the baby wouldn’t have to worry about exams, and he’d be on her side when they played kemari. And maybe, just maybe , he would make their mother happier like she said Moroha did when she was born.
With every little fluttering heartbeat she caught when cuddling close to her mother, she thought hard enough to push those feelings on to her little brother.
I can’t wait to meet you.
