Caught

Summary:

Jackie and Hyde are caught by their daughter, Kit, partaking in their usual pastime in the Forman’s basement.

Notes:

This is such a short little piece, but I had fun writing it. There’s barely any substance to it, but I plan to have way more Kit stories. They will be in a separate series. This is a more Jackie/Hyde focused Kit story, so it’s staying in this ‘Married Life’ series. Kit is around 16/17 here.

Work Text:

“Mom?” Kit asked. She’d just walked into the basement from the outside door, Betsy was trailing behind her.

“Shit!” Jackie swore under her breath, then turned to Kit, a smile plastered on her face, “hey, sweetie.” Kit’s mouth was wide open. Were her parents smoking?

“Oh my god, this is amazing,” Betsy laughed from behind her best friend, hands over her mouth.

“It’s not what you think!” Hyde said to the girls, but they’d been caught red-handed. He was still holding the joint he and Jackie had been sharing.

“Is that my stash?!” Kit asked, horrified.

“You have a stash?” Jackie asked, one eyebrow raised. She crossed her arms over her chest. Kit looked sheepishly at her parents, she wished she’d thought before she spoke.

“Come sit,” Hyde patted the stool next to him. Kit walked over and sat down, not meeting either of her parents in the eye.

“Betsy, you too,” Jackie said. Betsy stopped laughing behind her hands, eyes wide. She sat down next to Jackie on the old basement couch.

“Where did you get this stuff?” Hyde asked. “It’s so much better than what we had when we were kids. Isn’t it, babe?” He looked over at Jackie. Jackie’s serious expression she’d been trying to hold broke into a smile.

“Steven!” She laughed, and lightly smacked his shoulder. “You can’t ask your daughter where she got her stash, that’s bad parenting!”

“Babe, come on, we know she’s been smoking for a while. It's a miracle Kitty and Red didn’t catch her before this.”

“I know, I seriously can’t believe they lectured us about supervising our kid better. They’d be horrified if they knew what we got up to as kids right under their noses.” Jackie laughed.

Kit and Betsy watched this exchange between the adults, both a bit horrified and intrigued. Kit held up one finger, “Excuse me, what do you mean you know I’ve been smoking for a while?” she asked.

“Sorry, sweetie, did you think you were being sneaky?” Jackie asked.

“Yes, actually I did,” Kit replied, defiantly, arms crossed like her mother’s.

“Katherine,” Jackie lowered her voice, “it's not being sneaky when you hoard snacks right when you get home. We know Grandma Kitty has plenty of snacks here, yet when you get home a lot of the time you barely say hi to us before you beeline it to the cabinets.”

“Oh, and the smell and the red eyes,”  Hyde added. Jackie nodded in agreement.

Kit was trying to process all of this information. Her parents knew she smoked weed and didn’t care? Was this real?

“Do my parents know?” Betsy asked.

“Not unless they figured it out themselves,” Hyde replied to his goddaughter. “Why do you want us to tell them?” He teased.

“Please, don’t!” Betsy squeaked out, her dad was a police officer, she didn’t want him to know.  “I, um, I think I’m gonna go and catch the guys at the Hub. I’ll see you tomorrow, Kit.” Kit looked at her friend, pleading her to stay, but Betsy was already standing and heading toward the exit. She slipped out the door and closed it behind her, leaving the Hyde family alone.

“Am I in trouble?” Kit asked.

“Nah,” Hyde shook his head.

“We talked about it and decided it would be hypocritical,” Jackie explained.

Kit’s eyes lit up, “But what about Grandma Kitty and Grandpa Red? They caught us last week and took my stash.”

“Where do you think we got it?” Hyde asked.

Kit started laughing, “You took my stash from them and then smoked it?”

“Honestly, Steven, I don’t know what they expected from us.” Jackie said, shaking her head.

“Maybe they think we’ve grown out of it, after two kids and successful careers.” Hyde shrugged.

“What do you mean?” Kit asked, “Do you guys like smoke all the time or something?”

“Not so much anymore, but when we were your age… there are some days I can barely remember.” Hyde replied. “Some of the best times I ever had though were in this basement, in this circle, with all our friends.” He pointed around the spool table.

“Do you remember that time,” Jackie laughed, “when you shoved a piece of cake in my face?”

Hyde thought for a moment, “I do remember that, you were gonna tell everyone my nickname for you.”

“I remember that being really good cake,” Jackie smiled, “I wish I had some of that cake right now.”

“Dad, is mom going to be okay?” Kit asked as Jackie got lost in her thoughts of cake.

“She’ll be fine, Bug, but we should probably stop for cake on the way home.” Hyde put his arm around Kit. “Are you safe when you smoke?”

Kit furrowed her brow, “What do you mean?”

“We aren’t going to make you stop smoking, but we want to make sure that you’re safe. Don’t smoke too much, and don’t do anything stupid after you’ve been hittin’ it. You’re smarter than that.” Hyde said quietly to Kit, Jackie just smiled at them.

“Of course, Dad, we only ever smoke in the basement anyway, and we don’t even do it that often. The stash Grandma and Grandpa caught us with last week was the first stash we’d had in a while. We were pretty bummed when we didn’t even get to smoke it.” Kit said, feeling relieved that her parents seemed to trust her judgement, or maybe they just couldn’t be bothered to worry about her when they had her brother to worry about.

Hyde pulled the small baggie of weed out of his jacket pocket. “Here, you can have it back, just don’t get caught again. Red already yelled at us enough.”

“Thanks, Dad,” Kit took the bag from Hyde, shoving it into the back pocket of her jeans. She gave him a hug.

“Come on, let’s go get your brother from Grandma Kitty and go home to have dinner… and cake.” Jackie said, reaching her hand out to Kit. “We love you, sweetheart.”

“Love you too,” Kit squeezed Jackie’s hand and smiled.

“Here, you’re driving though,” Hyde handed her the keys to their car. “We probably shouldn’t drive high with the baby in the car.”

“That would be a bad parenting move,” Jackie pointed at Hyde, nodding as she stood up.

Later That Night

“Do you think we should have punished Kit?” Jackie asked Hyde while they were laying in bed.

“No, she’s a good kid.” Hyde replied, putting his arm around Jackie’s shoulder. She snuggled into his chest.

“I can’t believe she caught us smoking, I thought she was going to the Hub.”

“I thought it was pretty funny, maybe next time Kitty and Red are babysitting we should smoke with her. I bet we’d learn a lot about her and her friends.”

Jackie picked up her head and looked at her husband, “Steven, you just want to smoke more of her good stash, don't you?”  She shook her head, “You’re hopeless.”

“Leo’s stuff is never that good, man!”

“We’re not using our daughter for her weed hook up,” Jackie deadpanned.

“Fine,” Hyde replied, and Jackie put her head back on his chest.

“Today was kind of fun though, wasn’t it?”

“It was.”

“I still love that you taught me to love hittin’ it, Puddin’ Pop,” Jackie leaned up and placed a kiss on Hyde’s cheek.

“Goodnight, Baby Cakes.”
