Chapter Text

Who knew a luck test could go so wrong?

Nathan shook his head in disbelief. This was his fifth time losing! It had only been twenty minutes, at best, that the group had been in that pub, drinking, and playing cards.

“ Nathan, I don’t think you should keep fighting a losing battle!” Enoch Hale laughed. Nathan grumbled.

Nathan didn’t necessarily hate his older brother, but he didn’t like him that much either. Especially when he teased him for his bad luck.

“ Oh, come on. I can win at least one game.” Nathan protested. He heard Enoch burst out laughing.

“ With your luck? I don’t think so.” Nathan looked over beside him to his best friend in Yale, Ben Tallmadge. Nathan heard Asher Wright mutter in agreement.

“ I am lucky. All the girls in town like me!” Nathan boasted. It was true. He could hear some girls that worked at the tavern giggle behind their hands.

Nathan thought for a quick second. Did he really like women like he should? He saw them as friends, despite his flirty nature with them.

Ben elbowed Nathan to bring him back.

“ Then I say you take a luck test!” Asher Wright declared. Nathan rolled his eyes playfully, but decided to prove them wrong, well, try at best.

“ Okay then, I will take part in this test then. I believe I’ll ace it.” The others laughed. They paid, and left, trotting to the Yale campus.

They led Nathan to a place where they were out of sight. Enoch tied a piece of cloth over Nathan's eyes.

Nathan felt something be put into his hand. It was jagged, but smooth at the same time.

“ A rock? What is this for?” Nathan asked, looking around, trying to find where the rest of them were located.

Asher snickered, and so did Enoch. Ben cleared his throat.

“ Throw the rock. If it hits nothing, you win. But if it does, we earn the right to call you unlucky.” Ben explained.

Nathan wound up his hand and threw the first rock.

They all heard a window smash.

“ That was the professor's window!” Enoch laughed.

Next thing he knew, was that Nathan was given two more rocks. One smashed another important professor’s window, and the last went right into the headmaster's office.

Nathan removed to see the damage. He only saw a glimpse of the broken windows before he saw the light of a candle in the now broken headmasters window. Nathan took off in a sprint, and dragged Ben by the wrist. Enoch and Asher followed. There was no laughing, only short breaths, and the sound of their shoes hitting the ground quickly. The four split into groups of two, to spread out.

Nathan was able to run far, but collapsed on the floor, out of breath. So did Ben.

They both panted, trying to catch their breath quickly.

“ Okay. I’m not lucky.” Nathan said between breaths.

“ You are not. Oh god, what if they know it was us?” Ben huffed.

Nathan nodded. It would be hard to explain to his father that he broke windows for some dumb luck test.

The relief of laying down was short lived, as they heard others footsteps. Ben acted first this time, dragging Nathan to his feet. The two took off in a sprint. They rushed into their dorm building, which included ignoring a student and his buddys telling the two to watch where they were going.

Nathan and Ben quickly opened the door to their shared door, and flopped on their beds.

There was no talking, just the two huffing and puffing, trying to catch their breath.

What a dangerous way to test luck.
