4connectjune: somehow, I make to connect all the four prompts!

Look at the end for where there was the connection *wink*

Work Text:

They didn't believe in them anymore.

Bucky was a mermaid.

Well, a merman.

Still, people now didn't know about them, they were a myth.

They were something that no longer existed, that no one had to know.

Bucky had had to accept it, but when he thought about the past, when he remembered Steve, the only human he'd ever helped, his chest ached.

It had been nice to help the blond in his endeavor.

Then, Steve was gone and no one ever heard from him.

The other sirens had to sink further when Steve had been searched on the seabed.

Bucky missed him but, as a merman, he would still have lost his friend.

He was an immortal creature. Humans had such a short life compared to theirs.

That hadn't stopped Bucky from mourning his brother, however.

They still had feelings, and logic could never compensate for the pain of loss.

"The pollution isn't so bad down there. And I don't stay here much on shore." Bucky shrugged before asking. "You weren't dead?"

Steve burst out laughing. "You can't just go around asking people why they're alive, Bucky!"

"But you were dead." Bucky nodded. "They did your funeral and everything."

"It was exaggerated news." Steve shrugged, before looking towards the city. "I have to go."

Bucky protested. "I just met you! You can't leave now!"

Steve grimaced.

Bucky looked at him hopefully, and Steve said. "I'm on a mission. I have to go get some information. You can do your Ariel makeup and come with me."

"Unlike Ariel, Steve, I keep my voice."

"I know. But it seems like a good comparison."

"It is not." Bucky informed him, before changing his appearance and swapping his beautiful tail for two mediocre legs.

"Don't look so disappointed." Steve smiled. "You can always not come with me."

"Stop saying that." Bucky shook his head. "You don't get rid of me."

Steve smiled. "I didn't want to, in fact."

Walking beside Steve again was pretty cool, Bucky decided.

He was still slightly confused as to how Steve could actually be there, but decided to worry about that later.

"Where are we headed?" He asked then, curious.

"To the hot hole." Steve blushed.

Bucky raised an eyebrow. "Are we going to eat something?"

Steve, pulling up in front of a club, muttered. "Something like that."

Bucky turned and saw that they had stopped in front of a club.

"Shall we go in here?"

Steve nodded.
Then, taking a deep breath, he entered the room.

As soon as they entered, the smell of alcohol and sweat invaded Bucky's hypersensitive nostrils.

The sirens used the sense of smell to hunt.
Having that crap up his nose would completely ruin Bucky's future hunting experiences.

Then, his gaze traveled the room, before settling on Steve.

"Did you take me to a sex room?"

"It's called a strip club. They don't have sex."

Bucky watched a girl spin in only underwear.

"No?"

"No. Is this... to watch?" Steve looked insecure.

Bucky narrowed his eyes. "You don't know, do you?"

"They weren't there when I was young." Steve defended himself and Bucky snorted. "Good to see you haven't changed much."

"Is that supposed to be an offense?"

"No." Bucky looked seriously at his friend. "It wasn't."

Steve smiled. "You hadn't changed as well, Bucky. It is good to have you again."

Bucky smiled softly.

He had changed.

But Steve brought his old side again on the surface, he changed once again him.

Steve was special.

Bucky felt lucky to have met him again.

"What are we doing here?" He asked.

Steve pointed to a corner.
"My informer works here. She will give us all the informations we need. And then, we can leave."

Bucky nodded.

It was good to see Steve again.

Even if he bought them in a sex room.

Or whatever was its name.

Notes:

Modern AU: it is in the modern day

Mermaid: Pss, Bucky is a merman.

First responder: I didn't know how to connect it, so I took Little Mermaid inspiration and Bucky saves Steve from drowning.

Strip club: poor Bucky and Steve, the informer (Natasha, probably) choose a very poor place to meet Steve, didn't she?
