Lucifer hovered over me with a hot exhale that immediately condensed into a fog in the cold air. I reached out to him — to touch his sweaty face, take him into my hands in an attempt to soothe him. He looked like he was in pain — he looked so angry. Then, there was a flash of recognition just as my fingertips brushed the skin of his cheek. Lucifer quickly jerked away from my touch, recoiling as if I'd attempted to burn him. His eyes returned to their normal color, the black fading into white as Lucifer tore himself from me — from where he had pinned me against the door. He immediately snatched the book out of my hands.
