Chapter Text
Sara was completely and utterly exhausted. Which seemed totally unfair given that she’d only just come out of her coma. It turned out Gideon’s medically induced coma didn’t exactly translate to restful sleep. Which was seriously unfair since that was the most uninterrupted, nightmare-free sleep she’d had in years.
At least the team had successfully defeated Grodd and managed to get out of Vietnam unscathed.
She wasn’t sure if it was the exhaustion or the result of what had happened with the Darhks or something else but since she’d woken up she’d been on edge. More on edge than usual. No matter what she did, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was very wrong. Or about to be wrong.
The team could tell she was off. She’d been trying to do one of her “we got this” pep talks but her heart wasn’t in it. The speech was going poorly, she could hardly focus on her words. She could see the glances back and forth amongst the Legends but she was struggling to salvage her monologue into anything motivational.
Maybe that’s why when she saw the incoming transmission from Agent Sharpe she abandoned the half-hearted pep-talk. It was a perfect out. That was the only reason she dropped it immediately. Because it was a distraction. Not for any other reason. Not because she wanted to talk to Agent Sharpe. That’d just be ridiculous.
She hadn’t spoken to Ava since she’d handed over Rip to the Time Bureau. She knew Rip had gone too far but the choice to turn him in still haunted her. But what the hell, what was one more regret to throw on the pile.
She ignored the way her heart sped up in anticipation.
“Put her on, Gideon,” Sara said, ignoring the looks being passed between the Legends. Ava’s face appeared on the screen, her hair soaked and anger seething off of her in waves.
“Agent Sharpe, it’s been a while, thankfully,” Sara quipped, ready for their usual banter to play out.
But Ava didn’t look like she was playing. She looked ready to kill.
“You have some nerve, Ms. Lance! I have come to expect a lot of BS from your team, but even for you, this is outrageous.”
Sara exchanged confused looks with the Legends who all shrugged or shook their heads. Hm, so they had no idea either.
“Yeah, you’re going to have to be more specific. I have no clue why you’re mad at us this time.”
“Don’t you dare play dumb with me!” Ava spat back.
“You send me a message to meet you at these coordinates and time but then you don’t even bother to show. In fact, you’re still sitting comfortably on the Waverider while I’m getting soaked to the bone out here. What are you playing at, is this some kind of middle school mean girl tactic? That’s childish, even for you idiots.”
Sara’s brow furrowed even more as she tried to make sense of Ava’s accusations.
“Agent Sharpe, I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about, I didn’t send any...” Sara trailed off as a flash of lightning illuminated the darkness around Ava. Just enough for Sara to catch a glimpse of her surroundings.
“Are you on a boat?” Sara asked. That feeling of dread that had been sitting in her stomach all morning grew stronger.
“Apparently! And in the middle of a storm. Which, by the way, would have been very nice to have some warning about before I portaled here in a freshly pressed suit. So I’ll ask you again, Ms. Lance. Why did you send me to a boat in 2007?”
Sara’s face drained of blood. Her dread was replaced by full blown panic.
“Ava, you need to portal out of there right now!” Sara was shouting, and both Ava and her crew seemed taken aback by the outburst. The scowl Ava had been sporting transformed to confusion.
“Please, no questions, you just have to get out right…” An earsplitting boom sounded and Ava’s face was gone as her communication device fell and started sliding across the deck. The deck that Sara knew was at a 70 degree angle as the boat began to sink.
“Sara!” a voice screamed. But it wasn’t Ava’s voice. It was Oliver’s. It was the last thing she’d heard before she’d plummeted off of the Gambit into the open ocean all those years ago. And now, it was the last thing she heard before Ava’s communicator hit the water and began to sink.
