Summary
Jackie never asked for this. She never asked for some advanced scarab to attach itself to her spine, she never asked to become Blue Beetle at sixteen, and she certainly never asked to get tossed around like a rag doll by a monster made of rock.
She's no better at this then she was when she first started two months ago, it seems.
The armor can take a beating, the beetle says. Well, no, it says 'Our armor is compensating for your short comings, Jackie Taylor', but physically, she's fine.
Until that rock monster explodes, and she made the foolish mistake of taking her armor off, thinking she'd won.

Summary

Was Jackie Taylor born a biologist?
Most definitely not.
She took in just the right amount of information to pass with flying colors in high school, but she never cared about any of it. Then the wilderness happened. Nine grueling, torturous months that left her down four toes, two fingers, and a right ear. Then Nat happened. And somehow, through all of that, she gets back and finds out that bacteria are just about the most fascinating thing.

Jackie becomes a microbiologist, studying to get her PhD. Nat becomes a chef. Through all of it, they have each other. And an excitable 6-year-old in the youth soccer team Jackie coaches, who seems attached to them at the hip.

This is all Rocky's fault. He was stupid, stupid, stupid. How could he be so stupid and let this happen? Between the two of them, Grace was supposed to be the stupid one, not Rocky.
They were supposed to be okay, fine. Rocky and Grace saved the stars, saved Earth and Erid, saved humans and eridians. Rocky helped Grace and Grace helped Rocky. Then Grace saved Rocky. So Rocky had to save Grace.
Now they're supposed to be safe and fine.
But Grace isn't fine. Not at all. And it's all his fault.
Or, Grace accidentally comes into contact with Erid bacteria and gets sick, Rocky (understandably) panics

“You have to come here right now,” she hissed the second Van picked up.
“Hello to you, too, Nat.” A pause, then: “Why?”
“Jackie is in my apartment.”
“Huh? What are you talking about?”
“Jackie. Jackie Taylor. In my kitchen. Making actual eggs:”
“Like…fried?”
“Like whisked. In a bowl. There’s salt involved, Van.”
There was a pause. Then the dry scrape of Van’s voice: “Yeah. The Jackie that we ate and then shat out is making eggs in your kitchen, sure.”

Or, Nat copes with her trauma through journaling, a suggestion from her mandated therapy. But instead of writing about the wilderness, her thoughts spiral back to Jackie– what could have been if the crash never happened and if Jackie were still alive. It starts as harmless fiction. Healing, even. Until Jackie shows up in her apartment, alive and seemingly pulled straight from the pages Nat had been writing. Inspired by the movie, Ruby Sparks.
