The Baddest Ones

Summary:

Poe, Rey and Finn do some training.

Notes:

Work Text:

The small rocks hovered about an inch off the ground, floating there for a few seconds before crashing back down to the ground.

Finn sighed. Rey put a supportive hand on Finn’s shoulder. Poe pretended to clap in an extremely exaggerated manner.

Rey’s eyes narrowed. “We said you could stay if you were supportive.”

“Hey!” Poe protested. “I am being supportive.”

“That’s not being supportive,” Finn said.

“It’s not,” Rey added.

“I clapped!”

“Rudely,” Finn said.

“How is it rude to clap?”

“Someday, my Force powers might save your life,” Finn said, “And then you’ll regret not being more supportive.”

Poe thought about asking how he was going to use pebbles to save his life, but he decided it was wiser to keep his mouth shut. There was teasing, and then there was crossing a line. Besides, he had a feeling Finn was probably right.

Rey turned to Finn. “You know what would be supportive?” she said, in an extra loud voice that might as well have been shouting. “Sending all the rocks his way. Right into that handsome face of his.”

“Hey now!” Poe said, clasping his hands to his chest in mock horror. “That is definitely not being supportive!”

“I don’t think we need to be supportive of you today,” Rey said.

“I thought we were supposed to be supportive of each other every day,” Poe answered.

“Are we, though?” Rey said, but she could only keep a straight face so long before she burst out laughing.

Poe couldn’t contain his own laughter either. He joined her after that, followed by Finn.

“I did make you guys breakfast,” Poe finally managed to say, after they had all regained their ability to breathe. “That was very supportive.”

“Yes,” Finn said. “It was. You even made my favorites.”

“And I fluffed the pillows last night before we all went to bed,” Poe said.

“You did?” Rey asked.

“Only the best for you two.”

Rey laughed, but Finn sighed, a real sigh, the sound of it instantly bringing the mood down a few notches.

“What if I can’t do this, though?” he said. “What if the only thing I’m ever able to do is float a few pebbles above the ground?”

Rey reached out another supportive arm, but this time she clasped her hand around Finn’s.

“You’ll get it,” she said.

“How do you know?” Finn asked. He looked over to his pile of pebbles now lying sadly on the ground.

“Because I got it,” Rey said. “So I know you can too.”

Finn didn’t look like he thought that was quite a great reason, but this time Poe leaned forward and clasped his own hand over Finn’s free one.

“You can do anything,” he said. “You broke free from the First Order. Only a bad ass could do that.”

“The baddest ass,” Rey said.

“Is that a thing?” Poe said to her.

“It is.” She said it so confidently, he almost believed her.

“Well, if it is, then that’s us,” Poe said. “The baddest ass trio in the galaxy.”

Finn shook his head. “Do you think we’re really going to have to save the galaxy again someday?” Poe couldn’t tell if he thought that was a good thing or a bad thing.

Poe and Rey looked at each other.

“Oh, yeah,” Rey said. “Multiple times.”

“At least five,” Poe said.

“Maybe ten,” Rey added.

Finn shook his head again, but this time Poe thought he saw a glint in his eye.

“Great,” Finn said. “Three bad asses and some pebbles. Look out galaxy!”

But then Finn was grinning, and then Rey burst out laughing again, and soon enough the other two had joined in.

Sure, Poe knew, it was inevitable — someday the galaxy would be on the look out for their bad asses to save it. But that day wasn’t today.

Today, there were here. Together. And he was going to enjoy these moments for as long as he had them.
