Ace up my sleeve

Summary:

At the celebration of the ship finally making contact with the Earth ships, Wolfwood is nowhere to be found, but after a bit of asking around, Vash finds him.

•••

“Gotta find somewhere to smoke- don’t tell Luida.” Wolfwood laughs, not very enthusiastically, leaning his arms over the rail, a cluster of spent cigarettes butts at his feet.

Vash smiles and walks over next to him, leaning his back against the edge of the balcony. “What’s wrong.”

Work Text:

“Hey! I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” Vash steps out on the balcony where Wolfwood is as he lights another cigarette. “The girls said you were here?”

“Gotta find somewhere to smoke- don’t tell Luida.” Wolfwood laughs, not very enthusiastically, leaning his arms over the rail, a cluster of spent cigarette butts at his feet.

Vash smiles and walks over next to him, leaning his back against the edge of the balcony. “What’s wrong.” He didn’t ask it like a question- more a soft declaration muttered over the faint sounds of the party below them.

Wolfwood shakes his head, looking down at the crowd dancing below. “It’s nothing.”

“Wolfwood.” Vash looks at him, resting his hand on top of his. “Are you sure it’s nothing? It doesn’t sound like it’s nothing.”

He shakes his head and sighs again, his half-abandoned cigarette resting in his mouth as he mutters. “I’m fine.”

Vash raises an eyebrow, but doesn’t say anything as the two of them stand there in momentary silence, the only sounds coming from the music and merriment below.

“It’s…” Wolfwood sighs again, removing his cigarette. “It’s just, they don’t understand how lucky they are.” He gestures at the people below. “Out here in this ship- they’re protected from so much, they don’t know how lucky they are.” Vash nods, his eyes glancing at the joy below as Wolfwood continues. “And I know I should feel… excited that we made contact with Earth, that is a big deal after all, but I just… don’t know.”

“How so?” Vash looks back up at Wolfwood as he runs his fingers on the railing.

“I don’t know… it just seems bittersweet almost. These people have lived in this sanctuary of a ship for years.“ He shrugs. “Why have they been so lucky? Not having to worry about the horrors of the desolate planet we’re on, the madness of the people- all that… existential bullshit.” Wolfwood waves his hand almost nonchalantly.

“Well, they have seen some horrific things as of late… but yeah, ship three has always felt like a dream almost. The kind of dream that feels too good to be true. That one day you fear, you’ll wake up from it and find yourself all alone in this world… again.” Vash looks down at his feet, growing quiet.

Wolfwood glances at Vash with a soft expression on his face. “Everything alright there, needle-noggin?”

“Just… thinking. That’s all.” Vash shakes his head, staving off the thoughts. “But that’s a conversation for another time.“

“You’re something else, blondie; I hope you’re aware of it.” Wolfwood takes a slow drag of his cigarette, reigniting it.

“Speak for yourself, priest man.” Vash lets out a soft snort and tilts his head toward the punisher before looking down at the people again. “Enough of that; this is a party, after all.” He smiles as the music changes to a slower song. “Want to dance?”

“Dance?”

“Well, we are at a party, are we not?” Vash laughs. “Unless… you don’t want to?”

Wolfwoods eyes shift downward, slightly tensed up. “Well, no, but,” his hand slightly gestures out to the crowd.

“Oh!” Vash’s eyes light up. “No, no, just here. We don’t need to join them. We’ve got all we need here, don’t we, Wolfwood?” Vash reaches his hand out for Wolfwood to take if he wants. “No pressure, if you don’t want to.”

Wolfwood smiles at him as he drops his tenth cigarette of the night and steps on it as he takes Vash’s hand. “What harm can be done? Though, I’m not the best dancer…”

“Who said I am either?” Vash smiles as he pulls him off the railing and moves to the center of the small balcony. “Ok, hand here and… there.” Vash moved one of Wolfwood’s hands to his shoulder and the other to his hip before doing the same with his own. “You good, Wolfwood?”

He looks at the ground as he concentrates on his feet, trying not to step on Vash’s as they step around to the beat of the music faintly playing. “Yeah.” He looks up at Vash and smiles. “This is… nice.”

“Yeah, isn’t it?” Vash relaxes his touch on Wolfwood as he moves closer until all he can see is Wolfwood, as he stares softly into his eyes.

“Has anyone ever told you how strikingly blue your eyes are?” Wolfwood whispers softly as they slowly sway in their silent sanctuary.

“Has anyone ever told you how curly your hair is?” Vash reached up to touch his curls with a gentle hand.

“And how spiky yours is, although you’ve heard that many times before, haven’t you?”

Vash shrugs as Wolfwood’s hand moves from his shoulder to his cheek. “Yeah… but it always sounds better from you.”

“Well, your hair is quite spiky, needle-noggin,” Wolfwood repeats as Vash stares at him, his fingers still wrapping around his curls.

The two stare at each other in silence for a few moments, the crowd and music below ignored; it’s just Vash and Wolfwood. Nobody else- nothing else matters right now.

“And your lips do look quite kissable, Wolfwood.” Vash grins as he closes the short distance between them and gently kisses him.

“Oh?” Wolfwood whispers as he returns the kiss, his eyes closing as their lips lock for what feels like an eternity before Vash steps back.

“Sorry, I… I’ve wanted to do that for a while.” He smiles, awkwardly as Wolfwood shakes his head.

“Don’t be. I… enjoyed it.” Wolfwood says as he leans in for another kiss, which Vash gladly accepts.
