"Your Majesty," General Wei Wuxian greeted. So formal. So proper.
So in contrast to the fact that he sneaked into Emperor Lan Wangji's bedroom.
Wei Wuxian's silver eyes glinted with mischief. And Lan Wangji could clearly hear the teasing tone Wei Wuxian always used when using his title.
"Wei Ying."
Wei Wuxian straightened from his bow, the corner eyes crinkling as his lips stretched to a wide smile. "Lan Zhan."
Without warning, Lan Wangji tackled him to a tight embrace. Wei Wuxian laughed with delight and tipped to the side, letting himself fall on the daybed with Lan Wangji on top of him.
Wei Wuxian was a little breathless but continued laughing. "Ah, this is so improper, Your Majesty!~" he teased, as an arm wrapped around Lan Wangji's waist to keep him there. Lan Wangji huffed and buried his face against Wei Wuxian's chest.
'This is my private quarters,' Lan Wangji thought, 'propriety be damned.'
Wei Wuxian laughed again, perfectly knowing his lover's thoughts.
Lan Wangji closed his eyes and revelled in feeling the vibrations of Wei Wuxian's laughs and heartbeats beneath his ears and touch.
Lan Wangji nuzzled the skin on Wei Wuxian's chest—exposed as his robes are tied too loosely.
Wei Wuxian's breath stuttered. "Lan Zhan…"
"Missed you." Lan Wangji murmured, lips brushing the exposed skin with every syllable.
Wei Wuxian sighed and pressed a kiss on top of Lan Wangji's head. "I missed you too, baobei."
More than a year has passed since Wei Wuxian was stationed to the borders. And even longer than that since they got to have each other like this, both too busy with actions for war.
Their correspondence was regular. Wei Wuxian had trained a crow for the sole purpose of keeping in contact with Lan Wangji. But those letters and little trinkets seemed to make the absence of the other feel more gnawing.
For now, they got to have this.
Wei Wuxian ran his fingers through Lan Wangji's silken hair. A comfortable silence settled as the two of them just basked in each other's presence.
But it was proven again that Wei Wuxian couldn't keep quiet for too long and started to chatter. Lan Wangji laid content on Wei Wuxian's chest, as he listened to Wei Wuxian's baritone voice and responded at appropriate times.
They talked about anything and everything under the sun.
Except politics. Except of war.
They let themselves be enveloped in this bubble of warmth and love. Forgetting all worldly worries even for just this short moment.

The time for Wei Wuxian to leave came too soon. In a few hours, Wei Wuxian must return to the front lines.
Lan Wangji held on to Wei Wuxian's robe like a lifeline. "Don't go."
Wei Wuxian gave him a sad smile, placing a calloused hand on top of his. Wei Wuxian eased his fist to let go and brought it to his lips, giving a lingering kiss on Lan Wangji's palm. "I am your weapon, Your Majesty. I must go and endeavour for your safety and glory."
Lan Wangji pressed himself against Wei Wuxian until even air couldn't pass through them. He wished he could bury himself deeper into Wei Wuxian's skin, settle deep into Wei Wuxian's heart, be a part of Wei Wuxian, never to be separated again. "I rather desire more for you to be my zhiji. Be my heart. Forever be by my side."
Wei Wuxian’s hands cupped his cheeks. He leaned forward and kissed the centre of his Lan Zhan's forehead ribbon. The tip of his nose. And a long chaste press of lips. "Soon, baobei. I promise I'll come home."
