Chapter 1: Tommy

Chapter Text

01 Jan. 1939.

My Dearest Sarah,

I been starin’ at this paper for what must of been weeks now. But all I can think of is how much I miss you. You, our babies, Paulie, even Sam… Everything we had before I fucked it all up.

I promised a lot of people I'd always be there to protect ‘em, care about ‘em… I've broken a lot of promises, Sarah. But this is the only one I've ever broken to you.

I'm sorry. I know you’ve told me time an time again there’s no need for apologies between us but what else can I say? You’re raisin our kids alone. I put your father, their grandfather, in prison. I put their father, your husband, me, in prison. I put their uncle in the morgue with no one to bury him. And he put their other uncle in the morgue with no one to bury HIM.

Christ, what a family we make up.

I've made a lot of bad choices. I’ve fucked a lot of things up. I don't know what you saw in me that made you choose me all those years ago, but I'm so sorry to have made your life like this. You deserve the world, Sarah. And if you didn’t want to wait on me.. If you didn’t want to raise our children alone.. I’d forgive you.

She must be getting so big, my darling little girl. She’ll be in double digits by the time I get out. She won’t remember me. And Christ, our baby boy, he won’t know me at all. He's barely a year old. I would've missed so much.

Sarah, I'm sorry. so sorry.
