Work Text:
It had been three weeks since Temperance and Seeley had slept together. Three weeks since she had let her guard down. Three weeks since they hadn’t said a word to each other unless it was work related.
It had only been three minutes since she had seen the results of the test. “No,” she whispers. This was never part of the plan. None of this was ever part of the plan. Falling in love was never part of the plan. Booth was never part of the plan. Had she just admitted that she was in love?
She never noticed before how cold the bathroom floor was. How the tiles were uneven and some of them poked up into the soft skin of her legs when she wore a dress. She never noticed how the second sink from the door dripped, ever so slightly. It echoed off the walls, billowing in her ears as if it was thunder from a rainstorm. The only thing louder than the dripping was the sound of her own heartbeat.
She didn’t know who to call first, Angela, Booth, no not Booth.
“Dr. Sweets.” Temperance slammed the door behind her, ripping the blinds down to cover the windows and locking the door. When she turned to him she tried not to cry but it was too late, the tears were already falling.
“Dr Brennan, good- what’s wrong??” He shuffled some magazines around and helped her sit. “Here, let me get you some water.”
“Sweets I need help.”
“Ok, ok. I gathered that by the way you ran in here. What’s with all the secrecy, the blinds drawn and the doors locked?”
“I made a mistake. It was an act of heart, not of head. I am now facing the consequences of my actions.”
“What actions? What consequences? Dr. Brennan, breathe.” he slid from his own chair over to the couch cushion beside her. “In and out, in and out. In and out, in and out. Okay.”
Temperance didn’t say anything, she just pulled the test out of her pocket and handed it to him, hands shaking.
“Oh. Oh wow. I don’t know what to say. Do you know who the father is?”
“I- I don’t know how it happened. I didn’t mean to.”
“You didn’t mean to what? Sleep with someone or become pregnant?”
“It just all happened so fast and I was vulnerable and Booth was just there and-”
Sweets held up a hand, mind racing. “Woah woah woah- Agent Booth? Are you sure?”
“I haven’t slept with anyone in months. I was scared.” She looks up, her hands now wrapped in Sweets’ trying to hold on to something that felt like reality.
“I know, I know.” he rubbed her hands with his thumb. “Can you tell me how it happened?”
“I just.. I was scared and he was there. We talked.”
“About what?”
“Mr. Nigel-Murray. I felt… bad… because he died and I did not. Survivor’s guilt, Booth called it. And then I laid down, my head was on his chest and he asked me what would make me feel better.”
“And what did you say?”
“I said that he was enough. I said that he was enough and then he said that I was enough. And I said that I would never be enough. And then.. And then I kissed him. I kissed him and I kissed him more and then… it just happened.”
“So you started it?”
“Y-yes. I did.” Temperance sobbed, she leaned into Sweets and he let her lay their.
“So what are you going to do? Are you going to tell him? Do you think you’re going to keep the baby?”
“I don’t know, and yes. I can’t just kill a child because it’s an inconvenience. I don’t know what Booth would say. What if he’s angry with me? I didn’t take the proper protection! This is all my fault.”
“Dr Brennan this is not your fault.”
“Sweets it is my fault!"
“You don’t have to be a scientist to know that it takes two people to make a baby. This is not your fault. I think it’s a big step for you to be so sure about keeping it. I’m glad you feel so strongly.”
“So what do I do? I mean the logical thing would be to tell Booth, but he’s not as logical as I am. What if he wants nothing to do with me?”
“Have you discussed the night at all?”
“No.” Temperance said quickly.
“I think Agent Booth cares about you more than you think. I know my book may have been off on several things but your relationship is not one of those things.”
There was a knock on the door and Temperance panicked. “That’s Booth. I know that’s Booth. Please you can’t let him in, you can’t tell him I’m here.”
“I think it would be best if you told Booth about this,” Sweets advised. “You can’t hide it forever and if you want to keep the baby he’s going to ask questions.”
“Sweets, with all due respect if you want to keep your job you are not going to let him in.” She wasn’t just upset or angry, she was desperate. “Dr. Sweets please,” she begged.
“Hey Sweets!” Booth yelled. “You in there? Need to talk to you!”
“I have to, it’s my job,” Sweets said apologetically.
“Tell him to come back in a few minutes. At least let me leave!”
“Sweets!” Booth yelled again. “I’m using my key!”
“Key?”
“All the senior agents have a key in case something goes wrong. I’m sorry Dr Brennan.”
The door opened and Booth busted in. “I have some questions on a profile you wrote last week–” he stopped, seeing her still sitting on the couch. Her face was stained with running mascara and sobs racked her body. “Bones?” he whispered. “Hey, hey, what’s wrong?”
“I- I.. Booth I’m so sorry.”
“Sorry?” he rushed over to her, kneeling down in front of her. “Bones you have nothing to be sorry for. What happened? Sweets?” he looked up at his fellow FBI employee.
“I think this is between you and Dr. Brennan. I’ll give you two some space.” he gave a sad smile at Temperance before shutting the door and leaving them to it.
“What’s going on Bones?”
“It’s my fault, this is all my fault.”
“No. No, no. Whatever it is I know it isn’t your fault. It takes more than one person to make a mistake. What happened?”
Temperance didn’t answer. She sobbed harder, leaning into him and pulling him onto the couch. “This was never supposed to happen.”
“Temperance,” he used her first name. “Whatever happened it can’t possibly be this bad. Did someone die? Are you hurt?”
“I- I… Booth.” she looked up at him. “I’m pregnant.”
Booth sighed. “Bones I thought you were hurt! Come e’re.” he pulled her in, letting her tears dampening his shirt. “It’s ok. It’s ok.” He rubbed her back, feeling tears of his own forming. “Breathe, Temperance. It’s ok.” They sat there with nothing more than her crying to fill the silence. After a few minutes he finally asked the question. “Is it mine?”
She stilled for a moment before she nodded. One single nod. “I’m sorry,” she whispered again. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”
“No, I’m sorry. Look at me.” he put his finger under her chin, making her look up at him. “This is not your fault. You can’t make a baby on your own. I didn’t use protection. This is not your fault.”
“I thought you might be angry.”
“Angry? Angry, no. If anything I’m angry at myself but not at you. Never at you. Why would you ever think that. I- Bones, look at me.” he tilted her head up again. “We are going to get through this together. I promise. You came to me and we both agreed to what we were doing.”
“But you never said anything about it?”
“Because I didn’t think it mattered to you! You said that sex is just sex and that’s not what it was to me. You are never just anything.”
Her eyes moved from his eyes to his lips. “Are you sure?” she whispered.
“I have never been more sure about anything in my life. I didn’t sleep with you just because I wanted to have a one night stand. I slept with you because we mutually agreed that we could handle it. We can handle this. We can handle anything that life throws at us.”
“Even a baby?”
“Even a baby. I don't know if you've noticed lately, but I love you. I love you and I always have. A baby doesn't change that. If anything it makes me love you more. We're connected now. This child is a part of us that I will never let go. I love you Temperance Brennan, no matter what."
Temperance kissed him and this time it didn’t feel like it had three weeks ago. Three weeks ago she kissed him not knowing if anything was certain, and now she was certain. Booth was never going to let her go and she was never going to let him go. She breathed in the smell of his cologne. This wasn’t like it was before because there was no desperation. Instead, there was nothing but love. She no longer felt the weight of the world on her shoulders. He slipped his hand into her hair and she smiled into him. “I love you too, Booth,” she said breathlessly.
