The body lay displayed, almost reverently, in the center of a loft apartment in downtown Los Angeles. Limbs were arranged in a grotesque symmetry, ribs carved open like the petals of a flower. A smell of iron and lavender clung to the air.
Nolan swallowed hard. “Yeah,” he muttered to Lucy beside him. “I’m pretty sure this isn’t a mugging gone wrong.”
Detective Tim Bradford’s jaw tightened. “No. This is something else.”
Hours later, the crime scene buzzed with new arrivals—people Nolan had never met before but who carried themselves like they belonged in a morgue more than a precinct.
A tall, no-nonsense brunette studied the remains with detached fascination, muttering to her partner, a broad-shouldered man in a suit who seemed more cop than scientist. Brennan and Booth.

Cam sighed, glowering at the suitcase she had no desire to pack. The request to have her and Dr Brennan talk on a science themed cruise was unexpected, but the Jeffersonian put pressure on her to accept and she had (in hindsight, stupidly) agreed to do it only if Dr Brennan was on board with the idea.
