Work Text:
The breeze was unusually calming on the skin in the present moment. If it hadn’t been for the task about to be undertaken and the sound of her own heart resonating in her ears, Amy might have been able to enjoy the nature around her.
This wasn’t a day she planned for in her wildest dreams. In fact, she never thought that this day would come. Despite all her past advances and schemes to try and draw the ire of a certain someone, she knew that today was finally going to be different. Today, a different approach is what Amy’s got tucked away safely. After all, women have more hiding places than men, and this pulling the unexpected out of the least expected place is the best way to get genuine reaction; or so Miss Rose was trying to convince herself to believe.
The cold months of winter had come and gone and followed by spring, which blew by almost as fast as Sonic is known to do. With the flora in full bloom and so many colors from the thriving plants giving life to the environment, any remnants of Robotnik’s newspaper press were almost entirely camouflaged. For Amy, it seemed like the best place to put her plan in motion.
She waited patiently for any sign that he was on his way. She kept telling herself that everything was going to go perfectly to calm her nerves, and it had moments of working. Doubt is a pesky thing to battle, however.
“Almost as annoying as that crazy Dr showing up at the most inopportune times,” Amy says to herself out loud.
Her comment caught her by surprise, as she hadn’t really said anything to anyone all day. She packed a lunch for herself and Sonic to share, and hurried out the door and through the area to make sure she could catch Sonic where she knew he would be. As she made her trek, many friendly faces gave her warm greetings or tried to make brief chit-chat, which isn’t the most uncommon of things to happen to Amy. She’s adored by her peers and though a woman with a hammer needs no protection, everyone does their best to keep an eye out for her. What made the morning different though, is that those greetings were met with hurried waves from Amy as she dashed her way forward. She wasn’t going to fall victim to the act of tardiness. She wasn’t going to allow herself to belong to the same camp as the person she’s had her eyes on.
Amy continued to wait patiently, going over everything she had planned to say in her mind. She wanted to leave no doubt in her mind that she’d forget any part of what she wanted to say to him after their lunch was finished.
Amy waited patiently.
And she waited patiently.
And she continued.
Patiently waiting.
Until the patience subsided.
Amy had gone over everything she wanted to say to the person she wanted to give nothing less than all the stars in Starlight if that’s what his heart desired.
Time had passed, and the sky that was one so blue was now turning shades of orange and red as the last rays of sunlight from the day glimmered off the clouds resting in the sky of Press Garden. It was then that after the whisper of the breeze ended, that she heard footsteps approaching on the grass near her.
“Ames? What are you doing here?” the voice asks as it gradually grows closer.
Amy sighs and brings her knees to her chest, resting her forearms on them, accompanied by her face.
“Everyone in town said they saw you heading this way, but no one had heard from you practically all day,” says Sonic, as he approaches to silence.
“Are you okay?” he asks.
“You’re late,” she responds.
“Late? Can you tell me what it is I’m late for?” Sonic responds as he sits next to her finally.
She reaches in the basket holding their lunch and hands him his favorite thing to eat.
“This is for you,” she says calmly and without looking in his direction.
“Ames, you didn’t have to, but also I don’t think it quite works out that I’m late to a lunch date I wasn’t aware of,” he says as he takes the chili dog from Amy’s hand.
“Oh, no. It isn’t that Sonic.” Amy says as she continues gazing from the ledge, out into the sunset.
“Then, you’re gonna have to give me some kind of hint here,” Sonic says after swallowing a bite.
“For the fastest thing alive, you’re slow to the call,” Amy says sternly as she rests her forehead on her arms, avoiding any potential for eye contact.
“And the call that I missed was--,” Sonic asks trying to piece together Amy’s point.
“I’m not obligated to your time. You’re always saving the world or looking for the next thrill, or simply trying to enjoy life. There’s nothing wrong with that.” Amy says as Sonic listens on
“You can’t insert yourself into time, where time doesn’t exist. But anytime I’m with you, time for me stands still. Even when time is moving, I’ve got tons of it for you, Sonic.” She’s able to say before a taking a sharp inhale.
“Amy, if this was another-,” Sonic begins to say as Amy interjects saying,
“No, Sonic, you’re too late,” she screams shaking her head.
“We’ve had ample time to talk, but you’re always speeding off somewhere else. I feel I don’t need to hear you talk anymore, because your actions have been the loudest,” she says through audible sniffles.
“I’m doing what I know is best for me. I wanted to share at least one more moment where I could remember what loving someone feels like” She declares and stands up, wiping her eyes.
Amy walks to Sonic as he stumbles to his feet and is met with a kiss to his lips before Amy dashes off, presumably making her way back home.
Sonic finds a napkin amongst the remains of their lunch, which Amy hadn’t touched. On the napkin it says
“See you, Sonic.”
Sonic sits down holding onto the note. After a while he gazes up toward the now star filled night sky, feeling his eyes begin to water.
“Was I too slow?” He asks himself.
