"Ed knows there's a shimmery glow surrounding the ship and reaching all the way to shore. He remembers the first time he saw it, how the woman on shore explained it to him by dipping her hand in the water and swirling it until the surface turned from a rusty red-brown to a luminescent blue. He's seen it a bunch since then so he doesn't need to see it again, which is why he's looking directly at Stede's profile."
