Work Text:
Seungmin was a planner. Everything he did on his day-to-day was meticulously thought out and jotted down on his weekly agenda with a bright highlighter to separate out the groups of tasks.
Mondays were for grocery shopping, finance checks, and apartment cleaning.
Tuesdays were for working, and dinner dates with Minho, usually at one of their places to save the energy of going out for the evening.
Wednesdays were more work and laundry.
Thursdays had a later start to work in the afternoon, so exercise was a must in the mornings.
Fridays were for volunteering at the animal shelter and working from home in his office. Minho usually hung out with him then, dragging him out of the apartment once he finished everything up to enjoy the sun for a bit.
Well, that’s what Fridays were supposed to be for. The first half of his day had gone just fine, the shelter had a few adoptions and the weather was great which meant he got to walk a few dogs. Seungmin’s work shift even ended early, which resulted in Minho dragging him out of his apartment for some lunch at this new restaurant that had just opened up.
In theory, nothing should’ve gone askew from the details in Seungmin’s planner. However, an argument, which had been so stupid and ridiculous, wound up with Minho storming out of the restaurant. Chin held high, eyes slit, and body stiff.
Seungmin thought it was stupid, they bickered over minuscule stuff all the time and somehow Minho always found a way to force himself in the winner position. Seungmin had expected his boyfriend to come back in after just a few moments, but as time passed and the door to the restaurant only opened for new customers, things weren’t looking so bright.
He paid for their drinks, the food hadn’t come yet and walked outside where he expected to find Minho sitting with his stupid grin that he always held. Seungmin would punch his arm for abandoning him and they’d find something else to do.
However, Minho wasn’t outside. Neither was his car. Minho had been Seungmin’s ride over, and he knew the older had a knack for taking care of him, whether he admitted it or not. Whipping out his phone to call his boyfriend, Seungmin ignores the way his heart clenches with an unusual sense of dread.
Minho’s contact was at the top of his list after he had stolen his phone once and placed the number 1 in front of his name to override his other contacts. “For easier access, I know how much you love talking to me.” Seungmin made sure to investigate Minho’s own phone afterward, his own contact in his boyfriend’s phone also with a #1 next to it, as well as their text conversation being pinned in his chat app.
Seungmin’s phone hadn’t even given out a ring before alerting him that the number he was trying to dial was unavailable. The clenching his heart had done earlier came back to him, his hands now clammy as he pressed the call button again. Perhaps it was a fluke.
The phone once again greeted him with the unavailable message.
Opening up his text messages, Seungmin feels his eyes bug as his texts refuse to go through, all of them bouncing back with a failure to send a message notification.
Minho had blocked him. It was definitely one of the more dramatic things he had done during an argument, and instead of fretting over it on the spot, Seungmin grabs a rideshare to head back to his apartment where Minho will probably be waiting for him anyways.
Except Minho is nowhere to be seen. Seungmin tries consistently for the next two days, calling, texting, asking their mutual friends, and showing up at his apartment when he knew he was home. It all proved useless.
It’s by the third day that Seungmin decides he’s had enough. His phone dings with a notification, Life360, an app they were both keen on using as it gave great peace of mind to them both. Each time they left home, arrived at work, and were driving, they’d get notified.
Throughout his weekend of silence, Seungmin stood by as he watched Minho resume life as if he hadn’t cut off their communication completely. It irritated Seungmin, especially when he could see that Minho was home and the older still refused to open the door.
It’s as Seungmin is driving that it hits him full force. His car had been a bit too warm that morning, the windows getting cracked down to let out some hot air. He’s got groceries to buy and other miscellaneous things to buy at a few stores. His phone falls off his car stand, and as he waits at a red light, Seungmin finds himself with a master plan.
There’s a park nearby, and Seungmin’s feeling particularly evil as he pulls up to a patch of bushes, and tosses his phone out the window. That’s sure to alert Minho. He even steps out of his car afterward to grab his phone and turn it off fully, hiding his location by doing so.
Seungmin proceeds on with his day just fine. He heads to the hardware store first, one of his kitchen cabinets had broken off and he needed new screws to fix it. He strikes up a conversation with the older man who works the register, indulging him in his small talk as he pays for his stuff.
Store one, check.
He’s on his way to the library to return a book he had checked out the week before when he stops next to a street vendor selling flowers. It’s not budgeted out, but Seungmin’s feeling prickly after being left in the dust by his boyfriend. He buys two bundles.
The library is surprisingly packed, so Seungmin doesn’t spend too much time browsing the rows for a new book. He’s been into more supernatural reads recently, so the first summary that catches his attention is his ultimate choice.
Store two, check.
By this point, he’s already had his phone off for more than an hour, and as much as the silent rides between each store kill him, he’s determined to stick to his plan.
His grocery list is written out on paper, neatly folded in squares, and tucked away in his pocket. Seungmin’s favorite ballpoint pen has been brought along, checking off each box as he traverses the aisles up and down to assure he doesn’t skip anything.
There’s a line to check out upfront due to a holiday inching closer and an increase in shoppers to secure their essentials. Seungmin opts for self-checkout, not having much in his cart, and also enjoying the process of scanning things on his own.
Finally leaving the store, Seungmin quickly loads everything into the back row of his car before sitting down in the driver's seat. His phone takes about a minute to turn on, and then another to load all the notifications he’s missed over the past two and a half hours. As soon as it’s back to full function, Seungmin finds himself cackling.
47 Missed calls from Minho.
36 Messages from Minho.
Just as he had predicted, Minho had absolutely folded. His drive back home was filled with loud obnoxious singing and big grins. Seungmin parked at his apartment complex, no doubt alerting Minho of his arrival. His groceries were brought inside and packed away, and it was on his trip back out to grab his other bags from the hardware store and library that he spots Minho’s car slamming into a parking spot.
Seungmin’s bent over to grab his bags when he’s pulled back and turned around in an instant, his chest colliding with Minho’s as the older octopuses him into a hug. He can feel Minho’s heart thumping wildly, and his brain supplies him with the way his own heart clenched up a few days ago when he had been abandoned at their lunch date.
Pulling away, Seungmin eyes Minho’s face, streaked with tear stains and red eyes and slaps him. His car door slams behind him, locking up after a few clicks on the key fob. Minho shuffles after Seungmin, all the way up to his door where he proceeds to beg Seungmin to let him in.
Seungmin of course allows him in, only just because he did deserve an explanation as to why his boyfriend had crossed the line.
The conversion is much shorter than Minho was probably anticipating. He had blocked Seungmin jokingly but then had an emergency come up as he exited the restaurant, resulting in his leaving. He texted Seungmin about it, and after seeing him arrive back home, had thought nothing of it.
His text had shown as delivered on his end, and so for the next few days when Seungmin remained silent, he just assumed he had been wanting some space. Each time Seungmin had swung by his place he either had headphones on or happened to be in the shower.
It was when he had been notified about an accident from Life360 and scrambled to call him that he realized his number had never been unblocked. Seungmin’s calls and texts poured in, and it didn’t take long for Minho to feel like an absolute asshole.
Seungmin accepts the explanation but makes sure to get his point across about never acting out during a fight again. It didn’t matter if Minho hadn’t meant for it to drag on that long, because he had done it so jokingly at first, he had effectively cut off Seungmin’s communication with him and allowed him to spend his weekend mulling over everything.
Seungmin forgives him easily enough, knowing he got his revenge and also bribing Minho into cleaning his apartment for him. They spent the rest of the day with each other, cuddled up and making up with a movie marathon and lazy kisses.
Neither of them were perfect, or completely normal, but that’s what made them work so well together.
