When the Guns Are Down

Summary:

What is a solder when there's no more battles to be fought? Apparently the soldier is subjected to huge amounts of teasing by her friend about a certain human.

Notes:

These two are a very underrated ship.

Work Text:

What does a soldier do after a war is over? It’s a question that Acxa has been asking herself for a few months now. It was almost unfair how easy it was for Ezor and Zethrid, the two had settled into a domestic life quite easily, unsurprising considering their relationship had been going strong for quite some time now. Acxa had no such thing, no person like that.

She had friends, she had the two of them, she had Keith, her favorite sparing partner, and she kind of had Veronica, who she bonded with quite unexpectedly. But there was no one to share the quiet moments with, the nights when she went to sleep or the morning where it was time to make breakfast. The people she used to do that with were Lotor and the other Generals.

Two of those people were now dead and the other two have each other, she doesn’t want to intrude on that. Acxa was actually surprised at how much she missed having someone around. It was fine for the first month, settling into her new place, adjusting to Earth, making the home her own.

But truth be told she missed the companionship.

“What kind of companionship are we talking here?” Ezor leaned close to Acxa over the table, her eyes shining with mischief as Acxa’s did with annoyance. “If you want the intimate kind there are a few services that-Zethrid! Ouch! What was that for?” The bigger woman chuckled as she felt small fists hitting her bicep in mock rage.

“Cause it’s obvious that she’s talking about something more then a fuck. If that was all then she could have gotten pretty much anyone.”

“What do you mean, anyone?” When she first arrived on Earth she never got desirable looks, it was the opposite actually, most people looked at her with eyes that told her they were just looking for an excuse to throw hands at her. Not that they would have won, but she felt much more at home now.

Her eyes drifted towards Veronica as she thought of that word. “Seems to me like you don’t want just anyone. I think I was onto something before, it might not have been Keith but you definitely have a thing for humans.” Ezor leaned against Zethrid’s shoulder, out of Acxa’s reach, sure her friend was unable to throw a punch her way. But she could still shoot her a pretty good glare at which Ezor stuck her tongue out.

“The two of you are insufferable. I can’t believe I actually missed your company.” Even with that she couldn’t help the small smile that tugged on her lips as she heard Ezor yelling that she loves her too and Zethrid’s booming laughter that followed her on her way out. While Acxa could admit to being a little... frustrated when they were out in space she had her ways of dealing with it that didn’t involve dragging someone to her bed for the night and breaking their heart after.

Training. It never failed her, no matter what emotion she needed to get out.

“Knew I’d find you here.” Acxa stopped mid kick, her leg suspended in mid-air as she turned her head to look at the person who disturbed her training. It was of course, her favorite human, Veronica. “Mind if I join?” She was already making her way close, doing warm up stretches with her arms that made Acxa’s focus on her exposed stomach and legs. These human training uniforms, although comfy, made it hard for her to concentrate on her training with other people around. Especially Veronica. “See something you like?”

Acxa could feel heat rising in her cheeks when she noticed the way Veronica was eyeing her back. “What are you doing here?” That was a dumb question but it was one that she asked to avoid answering Veronica’s question.

She never was a good liar so of course Veronica noticed her deflection, so she stayed on it, “I noticed you looking at me before so I didn’t want to rob you of a good view. Plus I can’t afford to get lazy just cause the war is over now. You never know when you might need to fight again.” It was a sad reality of living as a soldier, that’s why they needed to make their days count. Veronica was someone who cherished everyone around her, her family and her friends, and she gave Acxa a chance when no one else would. “That being said...” A soft hand landed on Acxa’s shoulder, the two shades of blue meeting, “I’d like to take you out sometime. You need to learn to have fun.”

“I am having fun.” Training was fun, the adrenaline it gave her was unmatched, nothing could ever- The half-Galran’s mind went blank as she felt soft lips pressed to the back of her hand. She was fully frozen for several moments before she yanked her hand away, her cheeks now a deep purple. “What the fuck Veronica?!”

“Ah, at least you picked up on some curse words.” The way the Earth soldier went about her business afterwards was astounding. Was she just gonna act like that kiss didn’t happen. Acxa had a feeling that Veronica knew something she didn’t. “Consider that my formal invitation on a date.”

Date?!
