Chapter Text
“Lovely night, isn’t it?” Luz asked.
Amity nearly jumped out of her skin
“Whoa!” Luz nearly did the same. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Amity brought a hand to her chest, trying to slow her rapidly beating heart. “You just gave me a scare, is all.”
“Oh, sorry,” Luz laughed, nervously.
Luz and Amity were walking through the darkened streets of Gravesfield. It was their first date and both were extremely awkward. Neither had said a word to each other outside of the greetings, which was about an hour ago.
“Hey, the park is up ahead.” Luz pulled out her phone. “Want to take some pictures and videos by the fountain?”
“It is a nice fountain,” Amity noted with a smile. “I’d love that.”
“Sweet!” Luz's fist pumped.
When they arrived at Gravesfield National Park, they sat by the fountain. It was a lovely sight, the lights surrounding the fountain, the stars, and moon in the sky reflected beautifully off of the water. Amity sat on the edge gently ran her hand across the surface of the water, creating ripples that distorted the reflections of the lights, moon, and stars. Luz was mesmerized by the image, and took out her phone, beginning to record Amity. When Amity looked at Luz, she saw what she was doing and blushed.
“L-Luz…are you r-recording me?” Amity asked.
“Oh sorry.” Luz stumbled, almost dropping her phone. “It’s just…you looked so pretty doing that and I wanted to capture the moment and oh God am I a creep?!”
“No, no!” Amity assured. “It’s fine.”
“Are you sure?” Luz asked.
“I’m sure.” Amity gave Luz a reassuring smile.
“Okay.” Luz held up her phone. “Mind if I record for a few more minutes?”
“I don’t mind.” Amity patted the spot next to her. “Come on.”
Luz smiled and walked over to Amity, sitting beside her. She recorded them as they both created ripples in the fountain, Luz always making sure to capture Amity’s beauty, her smile and the way her eyes glistened in the moon made Luz glad it was dark so Amity had trouble seeing how red her face had become.
That’s when it happened. In the sky, what looked like two mere shooting stars turned out to be something barreling toward Earth. One landed so far away from Gravesfield that Luz and Amity didn’t notice, while the other landed only a few yards away. The whole ground shook, and Luz almost dropped her phone into the fountain.
“What the heck was that?!” Amity screamed.
“There!” Luz pointed at the crater that was made by the object and then ran toward it.
“Luz, wait!” Amity held out her hand.
Luz ran over to the crater to see a cube object had been the thing that had impacted.
“Whoa…” Luz’s eyes sparked in wonder.
“Luz!” Amity called, not hiding her hesitation when it came to getting closer. “Luz, what is it?!”
“It looks like a…cube?”
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
Amity’s hesitation fell, trusting Luz’s word as she joined her at the crater.
“Well, that’s certainly not what I was expecting when a random object plummeted to Earth,” Amity noted.
“What were you expecting?” Luz asked, cheekily.
“I don’t know, a ship, a weapon, some horrific creature that can spell doom to us all,” Amity snarked.
“I mean…it can still be one of those things.”
“How could it be a ship, it barely goes up to our ankles.
“It can be a very small ship!”
Amity giggled.
Luz slid down the crater.
“Luz!” Amity’s panic returned. “What are you doing?!”
“Just getting a closer look, is all,” Luz assured.
“That thing fell from Earth’s atmosphere, so you know how hot that thing could be?”
Luz scratched her chin and pulled off her backpack. She pulled out a couple of water bottles her mother had packed for her date.
“Luz, those are not enough to cool down something that fell from space!”
“Worth a shot!” Luz shrugged, then poured one of the water bottles on the cube.
To Luz and Amity’s shock, no steam came off of the cube. Throwing caution to the wind, Luz reached down to touch the cube, and as she had guessed, it was completely cool.
“Unlike you, this thing isn’t hot,” Luz said.
“That’s good…wait what?!” Amity’s face turned crimson.
Luz gave her a wink, then picked up the cube in its entirety. It wasn’t too heavy for her, though it helps she had done some working out with her friend, Willow.
“Luz, you’re not honestly considering keeping that thing, are you?”
“Of course not,” Luz assured, stuffing the cube into her backpack. “I’m going to sell it!”
“Luz, that’s insane.”
“Hey, I’ve been saving up for a car, and this thing feels like it’ll be a nice speed-running strategy to get one.”
“But-”
“A car, Amity,” Luz said. “Think about it, we can go to the movies, the mall, the city, and all without the awkwardness of needing my mother to drive us to and from places.”
Amity bit her bottom lip, clearly unsure.
“Amity.”
Amity looked at Luz, who gave her puppy dog eyes. Amity sighed and rolled her eyes.
“Fine, if you think that’ll make your life easier.”
“Thanks, Sweet Potato!” Luz ran up the crater, her backpack shaking with the cube inside as she did so. “You won’t regret this!”
Outside of Gravesfield, helicopters and cars were driving into the scene.
“I want this perimeter secured!” A man barked. “I want that crater quarantined and I need a group sent into town to catch where the other UO landed.”
“Yes sir!” A group of men saluted and went to work.
“Any word on what was in that crater?” The man asked into his radio to the pilot in the helicopter.
“We have zero visual, sir,” the helicopter pilot answered.
“Zero visual…as in…the object isn’t there, anymore?”
“That is affirmative,” the helicopter pilot confirmed. “Must’ve been destroyed on impact.”
“Or…or it crawled out.” The man looked to Gravesfield, the small town was still shining brightly, awake in early nightfall.
Miles away from the landing site, something walked into town and to the nearest car shop. It scanned the vehicle and turned into it, then entered what passed for sleep, finally resting after a long journey.
