Chapter Text
When exactly did this weird and confusing relationship between Ren and Dan Heng begin? Was it during elementary when they shared a class and Dan Heng ended up annoying the other boy with his very annoying interests in books? Perhaps during middle school when they shared all classes nonstop and Ren just couldn't mind his own business. To be fair, Dan Heng also couldn't. Or high school when Ren—despite switching towns—still ended up sharing the same school as Dan Heng?
Caelus, who had been friends with Dan Heng throughout the journey, simply thinks they are just tired of seeing each other's faces. While March replied to his belief with, "Speaking from experience?" with a smug smile on her face. Dan Heng of course was present during that time. But his eyes wandered throughout the whole room, repeatedly doing the same thing just to look at the attention-seeking dark blue-haired person.
They were unbearable. Even more for their friends. Now, their friends are friends with each other. Now, they are the ones to get dragged into hangouts. These of course started the day after Stelle rolled her eyes at Blade, saying "You are annoying." her mind was buried with the plan she made with March and Caelus—they'd been best friends for more than a month prior.
Now they are in year 12. All physically crying and mentally dying whenever any activity regarding school has to be done.
Dan Heng's brows are furrowed at the sight of the book he'd been reading for a history project. He squints his eyes at the figure before him. March is smiling brightly, her eyes sparkling, "Hey." she says, extending the 'yys' at the end like one would do when trying to hit on somebody through text.
"What is it?" He asks, alternating between the three of them: Caelus, March, Stelle,
"I may or may not have a direct answer to what your relationship with Ren is!" She cheerfully shouts and the librarian lets out a loud 'shh'. March covers her mouth and her brows relax but not for long when Dan Heng places a bookmark and closes the book he's reading.
"It has only been a week since our recent discussion about this. We should wait a little more."
"Come on!" The librarian turns her head towards their table and March apologizes with a smile. "What will waiting do?" she finally whispers.
"A lot actually. We can get started on our history project. Maybe get a coffee and eat our hearts out. Or you can pay me for the money you owe for like a month now." Stelle interrupts,
"Okay we should not eat our hearts, that's...not good?" Caelus says with a concerned tone but it's clear that he's being sarcastic with the laugh he brings along saying the last line.
"Come on, Stelle, that was like 5 dollars. Also, y'all familiar with Tom and Jerry? That's how exactly Dan Heng and Ren is. Messing with each other but still caring." March breathes heavily after saying all that with one breath. She smiles even more widely as if Dan Heng is currently not with them.
"Exactly what they are, a cat and a mouse, two species that cannot live in harmony together." Stelle stands up, "I have plans with Kafka, stay safe Dan Heng." she says, smiling on her way out.
"Awe, one person out, could've given me a heads up."
"What's Tom and Jerry?" Dan Heng asks and both of them drops their jaw open before Caelus starts holding back laughter.
"You seriously don't know?" March asks like she's personally offended that a friend of hers doesn't know what the classic Tom and Jerry is.
"No, what—who are they?"
"Oh, you are so lucky to have me. My time has come." She offers a hand to Dan Heng, "Grab my hand right now or don't because I will grab yours either way and we will be studying not school, but something more important named, 'Tom and Jerry' tonight."
Caelus chokes on air while Dan Heng just looks utterly confused, "Actually I don't think I can go out tonight." The gray-haired says, gathering his things but he stops when March meets his eyes and it isn't long before his hand is cut off from circulation due to the tight grip of March's hand. "Yes I will go, please allow me to still have the privilege of having a left hand." Their friend loosens her grip, returning her gaze to Dan Heng who had little to no choice so he grabs her hand,
"Will I regret this?"
"Absolutely not" "Absolutely," They said at the same time. Both overlap each other and Dan Heng begins to regret when March lets go of them to gather her stuff in excitement.
