Scratch & Dent

Summary:

Jazz comes back from his latest mission with a smile and a lot of injuries.

Notes:

For the 2023 round of Jazz Week, filling the prompt: Bodywork

Work Text:

When he staggered into Medical, Jazz’s body was scratched, dented and missing several panels. His visor was cracked and his cheek was cut and still sluggishly bleeding, and one of his dental plates was chipped when he grinned at Ratchet.

But he was alive and his field was truly cheerful and his demeanor radiated the satisfaction of a mission accomplished.

“I assume the next fifteen hours of bodywork are worth it, then?” Ratchet asked dryly, as he gestured the saboteur to a medical berth.

“Oh yeah.” Jazz hopped up onto the berth, and laid down, still grinning. “Ol’ Shockwave won’t be a threat for a while, and I smuggled out a lot of good intel. Megs wont’ know what hit him, next time we go toe to toe.”

“Good. I don’t have to rebuild you into a toaster, then.” Ratchet put a hand on Jazz’s shoulder for a moment, letting relief seep into his own EM field for a moment. “Or something equally useless.”

“That’d last a day, tops, and we both know it.” Jazz’s grin faded a little as he finished settling on the berth. “I’d be obliged if you could get me a painkiller though. Kinda coming down off the high now.”

“Sure, Jazz.” Ratchet patted his shoulder again and stepped away long enough to retrieve the necessary painkiller. When he came back, he inserted in into Jazz’s medical port with practiced fingers and they both relaxed as it clicked into place and started running its program. “And I’ll even make sure it lasts all the way through your recovery period, this time.”

“Careful, Ratch, or I might start thinking you like me.” Jazz’s visor dimmed in a wink for a moment. Then it went completely dark as he relaxed fully. “Promise me something, while you’ve got me under?”

“I’ll try, anyway.”

“Thanks.” Jazz reached into his subspace and pulled out a data stick. “Get this to Prowl and Optimus before they fritz. I haven’t actually debriefed yet.”

“That I can do.” Ratchet took the stick and tucked it into his own subspace. “I’ll drop it off after I get your bleeding stopped and replace that missing armor. The last thing any of us want is you coming down with a rust infection or an internal parasite.”

“Too true.” The saboteur smiled again for a moment. Then his frame went limp as the painkiller program gave him enough relief that his autonomic systems took over and forced him into recharge.

“Rest well, old friend.” Ratchet patted his shoulder again, though he knew Jazz wouldn’t be aware of it, and then went to retrieve the supplies he would need to begin the other mech’s repairs.
