Work Text:

Adam was internally freaking out. How he had managed the money for two engagement rings, he had no clue, but he had them now. Was it the right choice? He also didn't know that. How was he even meant to propose when he had his arm in a damn sling?

Lawrence had left early for work and Adam was just now getting home from buying new boots. It was pouring outside and Adams clothes were plastered to him. If it were any other day, the brunette would be unhappy with the circumstances, but he was on a mission.

Slipping off his old boots and putting on his new ones, Adam was practically out of the house as fast as he had been in it. And because he had been left with no car, Adam was also forced to keep walking through the New York rain until he reached the hospital. He had this elaborate plan to (teasingly) embarrass Lawrence by proposing to him in the middle of the work place.

If he knew better, he would have asked a few of the older mans coworkers to help him, but he was too shy to request that much. Sloshing through the water that had pooled outside of their front doorstep, Adam was thankful that he had a new pair of shoes. His other ones would have let the cold water seep in.

There weren’t many people out, of course, but the few people that were out were running past Adam were sparing him odd glances. This was no surprise to him, though. It felt as if coldness was creeping into his bones as he walked past people in their cars.

Adam was about to turn the corner right before the hospital when a woman walked past swiftly. He could have sworn he recognized her. But seeing how fast she was walking, it left no time for him to turn around and look. There were a few more steps before the entrance of the hospital and Adam stopped.

Looking up, he froze. Everything was hitting him again, and he was even second guessing the fact that he was about to do this. The fact that this question could make or break their relationship was even more terrifying to him.

Deciding to brush it all off, Adam sighed and walked in. The hospital was cold and Adam hadn’t been back in some weeks. Doctors were wandering around, sometimes with patients on their arms or in wheelchairs. Everything seemed calm.

There were also a fair amount of people in the waiting room, something that wasn’t unusual. Adam walked over to a free spot at the front desk and waited for the woman to look up at him. Once she did, he immediately opened his mouth to say, “Could you page Doctor Lawrence Gordon? It’s important and I’m his uh…” he muttered, “I’m his boyfriend.” Nodding, the woman pressed a button on the phone and held it up to her ear.

“Yeah, is Doctor Gordon available?” Fighting the urge to reply with, ‘Yeah, hes on his lunch.’, Adam looked away awkwardly. “Okay, hell be down in a moment.”

Nodding again, Adam went to go sit down. As uncomfortable as they were, Adam felt he was more focused on the doorframe that he knew the doctor would walk through. The ring in his pocket felt like it was weighing him down, clock was ticking too loud, the woman beside him was coughing too damn loud. Everything was too much.

After a few moments though, Lawrence came out and looked around the waiting room. His eyes landed on Adam and he walked over with a concerned look on his face. “Adam, whatre you doing here? Are you alright?”

The brunette stood up and walked over to his boyfriend, a small smile being present between the two. “Yeah, I’m fine. I just wanted to see you.” Adam started. “Look, I got new boots.” Adam muttered and bent down to lift up his pant leg. They were almost identical to his last pair, just shinier and less torn up or scuffed.

Adam let his pantleg fall and he rolled the ring out of his closed fist. It took him a moment, but he looked back up, ring in his hands, presenting it to Lawrence. There was finally silence in the room and it was eating the younger man up.

Lawrence was speechless. There on one knee was Adam, proposing. Lawrence had always thought that he’d be the one to propose. Adams smile was faltering slightly the longer he didn’t get an answer. So when he started to stand up, Lawrence nodded slowly. “Yes, of course, Adam.”

Eyes opening wide, Adam practically threw himself on Lawrence. There were a few people clapping around them, which only made Adams face heat up with embarrassment. After a few moments, they separated and Lawrence allowed Adam to slip the ring on his finger.

It was different than the one he had when he was married to Alison. It was gold instead of silver, and the inside had the date that they had met engraved in the inside of it. He didn’t even question where Adam had gotten the money and he didn’t plan on it. All he could think about is how they were going to have one hell of a good night.
