Work Text:

When people look at the wife of the Uchiha Clan's leader, at first glance no one would believe she was once a Kunoichi.

Why? She came off as soft and considering she has had her first child and was focused on her duties as a mother, no one questions these assumptions about her. Not that they held it against her; motherhood suited her as she was always so warm with her child, her first son who she did not shy away from giving affection to. He was only two and many knew that it wouldn't be long before he was going to be trained for combat.

Still that did little to deter her, despite some warnings and objections from elders who believed she was being too soft. Too gentle. Always reminding her that if she doesn't prepare him to inherit leadership then wouldn't be prepared for the harsh reality they live in.

Mikoto sighs quietly as she sits on the porch outside her toddler son's room; carefully folding the sheets as neatly and carefully as she could after they had dried out in the sun for the last few hours. She pats at it with her calloused fingers to make sure the wrinkles wouldn't remain before she puts it to the side, the vision of a housewife as she makes sure not a speck of dirty got on to the white silken cloth.

It was the same routine since she had left her life in the shinobi roster and it gave her a sense of comfort knowing that despite all the lives she had taken in her time doing missions that she can make a life for herself and her family now. The soft buzz of dragonflies passing as a cool breathe breaks through the summer air arounf her, causing her long black hair to flow.

As she reaches for the next sheet-

-Blood on her hands, blood staining her gloves, her uniform as the sheet she uses to cover the body of one of her comrades is splattered, she can feel it caking her hair as well as a breeze blows past her, carrying with it the scent of explosion tags, war, the metal of weapons-

-she takes a slow breath as she picks it up, closing her eyes a moment.

It hits her sometimes, memories of her time in the current war she and the clan have so far survived. The sounds of battle as they had fought tooth and nail, the drive to survive and win...sometimes when she lies awake at night she can still feel her shuriken in her hands as she stood over the worn battle grounds littered with the bodies of her comrades while she pushed her worn out exhausted body to continue.

Mikoto picks up the sheet to fold again before she turns to check on her child. A soft smile crosses her face as she watches her two year old sleep so peacefully, the soft rise and fall of his chest as he sleeps. Her baby, her treasure, her little Itachi. He was a ray of light that shone into the darkness that threatened to consume her when she chose a more domestic life over her husband working as chief of the police force.

As she turns away she finishes the last sheet that she carefully places on the stack before slowly standing up and leaning down to pick up the basket.

"It's rather impolite to sneak into someone's house when you weren't invited," she says quietly with her gaze still looking down.

Her dark eyes snap up when she hears the quiet creak in her son's bedroom; suddenly moving over him while grabbing the sheet at the top of the pile and throwing it up. When there's a very quiet hiss her shuriken pierce through the white cloth and into the intruder who dared to enter her child's room; she hears the soft thud of the intruder hitting the wall before she grabs the torn sheet against and shoves it into the enemy's mouth before they could shout.

"Mmph!"

Mikoto pins the intruder to the wall, her hand pressing harder on to the white sheet she was using to keep them silent; currently only able to make out the headband of Iwagakure. She narrows her eyes a moment before she tilts her head at the enemy. While she may not have the inherited genjutsu of her husband's clan she certainly wasn't someone to be looked down upon.

She puts a finger to her mouth and gives them a smile.

Itachi was breathing softly from what she can hear as he turns in his sleep; the two year old unaware of what was happening. This person-man, woman she couldn't tell with the mask and get up-was only getting one warning. She wasn't even sure why they would want to try and attack her defenseless child in his sleep other than perhaps to try and weaken the uchiha bloodline while giving an emotional blow to herself and her husband...

Before the enemy shinobi could retaliate, Mikoto without making a single sound that would awaken her precious son throws her opponent outside past the porch and makes them scrape across the ground. She quickly moves as her opponent starts to sit up. Perhaps injured or dazed from exhaustion it didn't matter; this shinobi was too slow.

With one quick throw her shuriken-every kept sharp and polished, never kept idle as she moves like she never stopped her training-the shinobi goes down. Their head band slides off, the metal split in two. Mikoto goes still as she watches for a moment just staring down at the still form; waiting and watching to make sure that she actually got them. Only as she watches blood puddle under the head does she slowly puts the rest of her weapons away.

"Mmm..?"

Mikoto turns when she hears Itachi; quickly pulling the shoji doors to the porch closed as quietly as possible. Her little one was now sitting up with his small pudgy hands rubbing at his eyes. She smiles as she walks over to her son and kneels down in front of him.

"What is it, Itachi? Did I wake you up my dear?" gently she reaches forwards to gently push his hair back from his face.

Itachi blinks and then yawns before blinking, "Mmm...bad dream, Mama..."

"Aw, sweetheart..." she gently fixes his blanket around him.

Like she didn't just kill someone who broke into her son's room. For what she wasn't sure but she also didn't care to find out. What mattered was that her child is safe and he didn't see anything. Once she has him back to sleep she would go and drag that thing to where the Anbu could collect the body and learn what secrets it held. She didn't care about that; all that mattered to the kunoichi-former, current, it didn't matter-was that her child was safe and she was able to protect him.

She hums to him watching those sweet eyes droop as she lulls him back to sleep.
