Work Text:
Tsukasa was sitting in front of the window, watching outside as it was raining.
He was an orange-ish yellow Selkirk Rex cat. He had a star jewelery on his collar said 'Tenma'. It was his family's surname. He was adopted because of the family's only child Saki was sick and she wanted to have a pet to accompany her while she wasn't feeling the best. She was the one who gave the name "Tsukasa" to him. She said it suited him right on the spot, and he was happy to be given a carefully choosed name for himself. He wouldn't care if there wasn't any thought behind it either, he was simply happy he had a name now. A family now. Instead of getting called 'Rex kitten' in the pet shop, now he was called 'Tsukasa', along with 'Tsu' or 'Kasa' too from time to time.
Days were continuing on happily when Saki was home instead of the hospital. Sometimes she had to stay there for days, and his other family members (he liked the idea of calling them dad and mom) couldn't stay at home too because of her condition. He didn't care, he had all the home to himself to explore and there was an old, kind woman who would come to house time to time daily to give him food and water. He thinks that nice old woman is their neighbor and his parents gave keys to her to check up on him from time to time. He was happy to acknowledge that the old woman was eager to feed him, sometimes play with him and talk about her life- most of the time her teenage years.
That's how all the old people were like, he assumed. They just grow old so much that nothing in their life was now interesting, so they just hold onto their old memories to continue feeling alive as much as they can. Tsukasa rethought about it and it made him sad, knowing old people were open armly waiting to vanish from this world to another place.
As he was continuing to dwell in his own thoughts, not really caring about what was going around, he saw a stray cat outside from the window. It didn't look like that cat hated water as much as he did, because it looked unbothered by it.
It got closer to him, to the window, and Tsukasa felt uneasy. What if it was one of those aggressive cats that wanted to fight for no reason behind? But then he remembered he was inside the house and the window was closed and the uneasiness washed off, even though not completely, but still.
The cat looked rather young— but Tsukasa still wasn't sure. Maybe it was in it's nature to look young even if it was ageing. Then Tsukasa suddenly jolted, not expecting the cat to talk to him. The cat tapped on the window with its paws and meowed.
"Could you take this poor cat inside? I am soaked and I don't want to freeze to death, fufu..."
Tsukasa wasn't sure of it, what if his parents got mad at him for that? He didn't want to disobey them. But he didn't want the kitten (just now realizing it was a he and also young as he thought first, probably around his own age) to actually freeze to death or get sick and die anyways, he would feel really bad if it happened so. He prayed to the gods above that this stranger meant no harm and his parents wouldn't get upset at him either, then opened the window.
His family knew he was capable of opening doors and windows but since he never tried to run away or anything similar to that, they didn't make anything to stop him from doing that.
The cat jumped inside and Tsukasa realized the cat was, in fact, not some light brown but purple! He was surprised that's for sure. He closed the window back and got closer to the kitten.
"What kind are you? I am a selkirk rex." Asked Tsukasa, not entirely curious about it but just to start a conversation.
The entirely wet cat licked his paw and answered. "I don't know!"
"You don't know?!"
"Nope! Not at all!" The cat continued to lick his paw while talking.
"What about name, what is your name? My name is Tsukasa."
The kitten looked a little confused, but answered anyway. "I... Don't have a name? People on the street call me cat or kitty but I don't think it's a name! It's just like approaching to a human and start to calling them a human."
Tsukasa felt bad. The kitten didn't know his kind, didn't have a name, probably also unaware of his age. He always felt bad for the animals that didn't have a sweet home, but he didn't think this further about it. He didn't know they didn't have a name, well, most of it.
"I'm sorry. I'll bring a towel to you, wait for me!" Said Tsukasa and ran to bathroom to grab a towel, then brought it to the purple kitten and helped him dry himself up. After drying up, he realized there were a few cyan streaks on his fur. One on top of his head, one on the left side and one on his tail. He had a very fluffy fur and it was mostly straight unlike his. His own fur was curly like a— what was the word- the while animal he saw on the kids cartoon... Sheep! Yes, that's it! His own for was as curly as a sheep and very much tangled right now because he didn't get it brushed for two days in a row.
When Rui sneezed, Tsukasa jumped and looked at him so suddenly. "Oh no! Are you getting sick? W-wait! I'll bring something to warm you up!" And Tsukasa ran off again without giving the purple kitten the chance to speak.
He brought his soft yellow blanket with stars on it and wrapped it around the purple kitten, looking at him expectantly for something he himself also didn't know.
"...Thank you, Tsukasa." Said the purple kitten and looked around sleepily. Tsukasa patted his head and nodded before saying 'you can sleep now'.
The purple kitten fell asleep, still sneezing time to time in his sleep. Tsukasa wanted to help further, but wasn't capable of it. He simply needed to wait for his parents to come home to help the kitten himself.
When the purple kitten woke up, he was getting checked up inside a veterinary clinic and Tsukasa was also getting checked up. He assumed it was because to make sure he didn't get any parasites or flu from him. Then a blond haired woman got inside, pet Tsukasa's head and came to his side.
"I think we have a new family member, hm, Tsukasa? Your sister will name him too. At first I was worried about if it was a female cat, since you're still too young and we didn't want to get you neutered yet, it might be an issue. But I'm glad it's a male instead."
Tsukasa didn't really understand much thing but only nodded to his mother. He was only waiting for the yummy treat he'd get when they get home from veterinary, and also get to know the purple kit— his new family member more. He looked like an interesting kitten and he was eager to know how the outside world was like, outside of home. So he would be getting along with him, there was also no reason why to not get along. He was a good cat that loved his parents and sister, that didn't cause any problems.
He looked over to his new family member- should he call him brother? But he didn't really feel like so. He was indeed interested by him and wanted to get to know him more, also accepted him in the family right on the spot but he didn't feel like seeing him as a brother. He saw how his fur now looks neater, cleaner and he seemed to be getting his vaccines.
After all that time in veterinary, his mom drove them back to home where his father and sister were waiting for both of them to arrive. Saki hugged to Tsukasa and placed a kiss on top of his head, scratching his back. "Welcome home Tsukasa! Let's name this cute new kitty in our family, shall we? Hehehe!"
Tsukasa as the good kitten he is, nodded and licked Saki's cheek, causing her to giggle. She also held the purple kitty and sat back on the couch, petting them both.
"So purple kitten! You are a Sokoke kind as my daddy said to me and I'm willing to name you after my favorite character in one of the show's I'm watching! Welcome home, Rui! You are now a Tenma, hehehe~!!"
Rui's eyes widened and he definitely looks excited to be named, to be inside a family. He looked at Tsukasa and Tsukasa only nodded to him acceptingly, then turned back to Saki. He felt happy, truly happy.
"Oh! You're also just 8 months old, how cute! Tsukasa is 9, just so you know! He is one month and a half bigger than you but I thought you were older, honestly! You're just so cute, I want to bite you two!"
Rui yawned and Saki giggled before getting up and placing them both on their own cushions. Tsukasa's was a yellow one and Rui's was an unsurprisingly purple one. Saki kissed both of their heads and got back up. "Okay! I'm going back to sit with daddy while mommy buys some things for you! I think you two can share some of your toys but some things needs to be personal, no? Hehe! I am so happy, I have two cute kitties!!" She jumped excitedly and went back to living room.
Tsukasa turned to Rui to start a conversation and get to know him better. "Hi, p— Rui! Rui... Ruuiii. Rui. Ru~i. Hehe, saying Rui is so funny!"
Rui giggled then yawned again before stretching himself and smile at him. "Howdy, Tsukasaa~ Tsu Tsu Tsu Tsu Tsu! Ka~sa."
They were laughing together and getting to know eachother better day by day. Tsukasa wasn't lonely at home anymore, Rui wasn't lonely at outside anymore, they both had a warm feeling inside of them growing for eachother.
It passed nearly a year, Rui assumed, since he got adopted in this lively family. One day, something happened. Something that made him realize it better that how much he cares about Tsukasa and how he cannot live a moment without him anymore.
When they were playing together, jumping from couch to couch while Saki was watching them, laughing along, meanwhile their parents at the kitchen, cleaning the breakfast dishes. Tsukasa jumped on a pillow on the edge of the couch, ending up with the pillow falling with Tsukasa on top. Normally, he had jumped from much higher places without any scratches but this time... He fell really bad. Rui saw his little paw twist— his guts hurted to see such an accident. Tsukasa meowed (it was very similar to a child's scream) loudly, Rui immediately went to his side along with Saki.
Saki was scared. She had tears in her eyes and she ran to kitchen, yelling at her parents that Tsukasa fell. They rushed to living room with Saki, taking a look at Tsukasa's paw. Tsukasa was crying desperately, feeling the strong throb in his paw.
Rui was licking Tsukasa's head in hopes to relax him a bit, to take his pain away even a little. He felt like it was his fault for playing a such game leading Tsukasa to get hurt.
Their father held Tsukasa up carefully and tuned to his wife, telling her to get the car keys while he will wrap a piece of cloth around Tsukasa's broken bone. Their mother nodded and immeasurably got the car keys, putting Saki inside first.
Rui wanted to come along too. He knew humans weren't capable of understanding their language but he could at least gesture them that he wants to be there too. Just as his father was about to get outside as well, Rui clinged to his leg, meowing sadly. His father sighed and nodded, telling him he can come with them. Rui smiled and jumped inside the car while his father sat on the front, holding Tsukasa tight but gentle while his mother drove the car.
Saki's were still teary but she was continuously rubbing Rui's back, somewhat sensing his discomfort and wanting to make him feel better. Rui was glad for the action but he was still very worried for his— his what? Brother? Friend? He never liked the idea to call him a brother because he felt closer than that. He didn't know how to explain it but he just felt like their bond was more than siblings. Maybe close friends? As Saki called a few girls that came to house from time to time, "best friends ever"? Whatever it was, Rui was sincerely worried, at least that was for sure.
When they arrived at the veterinary, their father said he can go inside and they can wait inside the car with his wife but Saki insisted that she will come too and she at least wanted to accompany her precious cat, her precious brother. They gave up and said their 'okay's to her and allowed her to come as well.
Rui couldn't clearly understand, nor he did remember what happened exactly at there but he knows that Tsukasa now had a plastered paw and he was having quite trouble while walking. He couldn't run either!
Rui was always by his side, helping him with whatever he was doing. He was still worried about him even though it's been two weeks since they came home from the hospital. At the moment, they were in front of the television, watching kids cartoons while Tsukasa was on the bottom and Rui's head on top of his head as he was very interested about the cartoon.
Tsukasa made a soft yawning sound, earning a lick from Rui on top of his head.
"You lick everywhere so much, you know? You always lick your own paw and tail and leg and even me!"
Rui purred and licked the top of his head more aggressively than before. Tsukasa looked up to him and Rui was just about to the top of his head, he accidentally kissed his mouth without intending to. Both of them felt embarrassed didn't say a word until Rui broke the weird silence.
"I think I want to kiss you more."
"...huh?"
Tsukasa was speechless, he didn't expect a comment like that! Or a want? What was he supposed to do! He knew for sure that he didn't mind the kiss actually but there's no need for being so bold!? He thought for a while and nodded.
Rui tilted his head, not clearly understanding the gesture.
"Dumb." Said Tsukasa, then connected their mouths again this time not by an accident.
Saki came in the living room to watch her favorite kids cartoon, only to be found with two cats making out. Wow, they didn't need to smooch in front of her choco-milk.
"...MOM! DAD! THE CATS ARE HOMOSEXUAL!!!"
