Running on Raindrops

Summary:

Daichi and Suga decide to head out for a normal, run-of-the-mill hike in the woods - or they would have, if Suga hadn't sprained his ankle, they hadn't gotten lost, and/or it hadn't started pouring.

Thankfully, they have each other, so they can at least fall apart together.

Notes:

Here it is, my piece for the Petrichor Zine! It was a joy to write for the event, and thank you to everyone who participated/worked on the event!

Because I can't seem to write enough of it, I have once again written some good old-fashioned DaiSuga fluff. Hope you enjoy!

Work Text:

“Look on the bright side, Dai, at least it’s just a sprained ankle and not like a dismembered arm or something.”

Daichi sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of his nose as he glanced down at the smiling silver-haired man.

“Suga…”

“What’s up with this negative attitude, huh? Why don’t you lean down here a little bit and I’ll smack it out of you.” Suga grinned before putting on a goofy face, moving his arms into a karate chop stance.

Daichi tried to bite back a small smile, but it was hopeless when it came to Suga. He was always hopeless when it came to Suga.

“There it is! That beautiful smile of yours.” Suga beamed up at the brunette, his genuine happiness at seeing his boyfriend smile made Daichi flush red.

“Alright less talking, more focusing on how we are gonna get you back to the car,” Daichi said, assessing their current predicament - said predicament being the silver-haired man sitting on a rock in the middle of the forest with his now bum ankle propped up.

To be fair, it had been Daichi who suggested they go for a hike, and Suga had been sure to remind him of that as soon as they had gotten him situated on the rock. But Suga had been the one to jump up onto said rock to show Daichi how he was king of the world for all of about three seconds before he slipped and landed on his ankle wrong.

Was it too much to ask for a normal hike in the woods?

“I think you and your strong muscles should carry me back to the car,” Suga quipped, grinning wildly. Daichi sighed, but moved towards his boyfriend and turned to face away from him.

“Alright get on,” he said, unable to contain a chuckle when Suga exclaimed, “yes!” in victory. He steadied himself, allowing Suga to crawl onto his back and hook his arms around his neck. Daichi placed his hands under the other man's thighs, hoisting him up further and chuckling again at the yelp Suga let out at the jostling. The brunette made sure to keep Suga’s left leg outstretched so that his ankle didn’t get hit while Daichi carried him.

“At least we didn’t do anything dumb, like go off the trail or something,” Suga chirped happily from where he was hanging off of Daichi’s back.

“I’m pretty sure you did go off the trail, Koushi, and in the ten seconds you did, you managed to injure yourself.”

“Okay, nobody likes a know-it-all Dai,” Suga grumbled.

Daichi rolled his eyes, squeezing Suga’s thigh in retaliation. The silver-haired man yelped, smacking him on the back of the head.

They had managed to make it about an hour out from the trail head, so Daichi settled in for a bit of a walk back, to say the least.

It was becoming increasingly clear, however, that there was something wrong when they had been hiking back in the direction of the car for forty-five minutes and didn’t see a single landmark that looked familiar.

“Uh, Dai?” Suga asked tentatively, lifting his chin from where it had been resting on Daichi’s shoulder. “Do you happen to recognize any of this?” He asked, gesturing vaguely to the forest around them.

Daichi’s eyebrows scrunched together in confusion and slight annoyance at the realization that no, he did not recognize any of this, and that they definitely should have been close to the car by now.

“Fantastic,” Suga groaned, taking Daichi’s silence as confirmation that they were indeed lost.

“It’s fine, Koushi, we’ll just head back the way we came and see if we missed a turnoff somewhere or something,” Daichi placated, already turning around as he adjusted the deadweight on his back.

“I hate you and your optimism Dai. Let me wallow in this absolutely traumatic experience we are going through,” Suga cried, burying his face into the crook of Daichi’s neck.

The brunette smiled a little despite himself, rolling his eyes fondly.

“You mean this minor inconvenience?” Daichi quipped, scanning the trail for any path he might have missed.

“Tomato, tahmato.” Suga responded, waving off the comment.

Daichi started to roll his eyes again, when he felt something that might, unfortunately, make Suga’s claims a little more accurate.

“Daichi.”

Oh he was never going to hear the end of this.

“Tell me right now that was not rain that I just felt.”

The brunette cringed, looking up at the now stormy sky.

“It’s just a single raindrop Koushi, and we should still be pretty close. As long as we get a move on we should be fin-“

The rest of Daichi’s sentence was drowned out by the downpour that came out of nowhere. The two were soaked to the bone instantly, unable to look anywhere but the ground without getting a flood of water in their eyes.

“You were saying, Dai?” Suga asked, a hint of smugness in his voice.

Daichi cursed under his breath, before adjusting his boyfriend once again.

“Alright, buckle up,” he warned.

“Wait, Dai no-ACK!” Suga’s protest was cut off by the jostling he suffered as Daichi took off running through the rain.

“This is your idea?! Running to the car?” Suga shouted over the sound of the downpour, clinging to the brunette’s back for dear life.

“Do you have a better one?” Daichi shouted back, focusing on trying not to slip and die on the slick, muddy ground.

Suga grumbled something that Daichi couldn’t make out over the thundering sound of rain, but felt the silver-haired man cling tighter to his back as he continued to run.

After a few minutes, Daichi slowed down to catch his breath. The rain; however, did not seem like it was going to be letting up anytime soon.

“I hate to be a negative Nelly, but what if we are still going the wrong way?” Suga asked, this time directly in his ear so he didn’t have to shout as loud. Daichi frowned, already having considered this.

The brunette was silent for a minute as he weighed their options. He could continue to test his endurance through the forest, but with Suga on his back he knew he was going to be a bit slower, and he wasn’t exactly keen on trying eight different paths back to what was hopefully the car.

Daichi sighed, before turning back the way they had originally come from, not exactly thrilled that they were going to be putting more distance between them and freedom.

“There was an overhang we passed on the way up, so let's try to wait out the storm there for now,” Daichi shouted over his shoulder. He felt Suga nod against his back, having shoved his face into the brunette’s shoulder in an attempt to keep the water out of his eyes.

As the two made their way back to the small, rocky bit of shelter, it almost seemed as though it started to rain harder, which Daichi hadn’t thought was possible. He ended up running the last stretch to safety, both of them completely drenched by the time they made it.

The brunette gently set Suga down on a small rock under the overhang before wringing his shirt out in an unsuccessful attempt to remove some of the water from his clothes.

“Well this sucks,” Suga said, shaking his head like a dog to get the water out of his hair, not having much more success than Daichi.

The brunette ran a hand through his own soaked hair, flinging the water off that clung to his hand.

“Not the best situation to find ourselves in, no,” he agreed, before stooping down to gently examine Suga’s ankle.

“How ya doing?” Daichi asked, turning the silver-haired man’s foot back and forth in his hands.

“I’ve been better,” Suga said, a little nonplussed. Daichi scrunched his eyebrows up at his boyfriend disapprovingly.

“What? You’re gonna tell me right now that you’re just so thrilled to be stuck with me and my messed up ankle in the middle of a flash flood in the freaking forest?” He asked, seemingly growing more annoyed at Daichi’s look.

The brunette’s frown deepened, before he sighed and put his hands on his crouched knees.

“I’m not thrilled that you’re injured and we’re a little stranded, no. But I would be exponentially more annoyed if you weren’t here with me,” he said firmly, keeping eye contact with Suga’s now softening expression.

“I’m not stuck with you. I’m never stuck with you, I chose to be here with you. And even if I had known beforehand that you were gonna be an idiot, which I did know going into this - don’t give me that look - and that there was going to be a torrential downpour on the way back, I still would have chosen to do this. Because I would be with you.” The last sentence Daichi finished a little lamely, noticing Suga’s clear embarrassment at his words.

Suga groaned, putting his head in his hands in an attempt to fight off the blush that Daichi had seen creeping up on his face. The brunette grinned at that, taking some entertainment about his boyfriend’s discomfort.

“Why you feel the need to be so goddamn cheesy is beyond me.” His voice was muffled, but Daichi could hear the clear chagrin in his voice.

“You’re the one who’s always telling me I need to not be so negative all the time,” Daichi countered, moving one of his hands up to rest on Suga’s shoulder, rubbing it affectionately.

Suga lifted his head at the contact, the ghost of a warm smile gracing his face now as he looked at the brunette.

“How dare you use my own words against me, Dai,” Suga said, but there was no real heat behind it.

Daichi grinned back at his boyfriend, pleased that he had managed to make him smile.

The brunette squeezed the other man’s shoulder before standing up and glancing outside. It was still raining, but it had slowed a bit.

He looked back at Suga to see him staring back at him, asking what their next move was with his eyes.

“I think we just go for it,” Daichi said, turning back to the rain.

“Let’s do it,” Suga echoed confidently, seeming to have perked up significantly. He smiled up at the brunette who couldn’t help but return it.

Daichi leaned down to allow Suga to wrap his arms around his neck and hoisted him back up. He let out a deep breath before stepping back out into the rain, happy to find that it was indeed lightening up from a deluge of water to a heavy rainfall.

He smiled as he felt Suga nuzzle into his back, once again hiding his face to avoid the water.

It was the sweet gesture that gave Daichi the idea, gently moving to lower the silver-haired boy to the ground. Suga let out a confused noise, but obliged, putting his weight onto his good ankle.

“Dai, what are you-mmph!” Suga’s question was cut off by the brunette pressing his lips sweetly to his boyfriend’s, who quickly recovered and smiled into the kiss. It wasn’t a long kiss by any means, but a soft one that was full of happiness.

Daichi pulled away, but not before placing a chaste kiss against the other man’s temple. No words were exchanged after that, just grins before the brunette lifted Suga back up.

They walked in content silence for a while, before Suga finally broke it.

“What was that for anyway?” he asked.

Daichi shrugged against the other man’s arms. “You said it yourself, I’m pretty cheesy. Just felt like leaning into it a bit.”

Suga laughed, hooking his chin over Daichi’s shoulder with a silly grin on his face.

“Almost makes up for the fact that you got us lost in the woods,” Suga mused, earning him an unimpressed side-eye from the brunette.

“I think I liked it better when you were just quietly enjoying the ride,” Daichi said, turning back to face forward.

“Oh, I am most definitely enjoying the ride- OW!” Suga yelped when Daichi pinched his leg, giving him a disapproving look.

“Not nice Sawamura, not nic- is that what I think it is?” Suga suddenly cut himself off, pointing in the direction of a wooden post that had come into view.

Daichi saw it at the same time as him, breathing out a long sigh of relief at the sight of the fence that separated the woods from the parking lot.

“Thankfully, yes,” he said, hurrying just a bit through the last stretch to cross the threshold into freedom. Daichi set Suga down, before reaching into his pocket for the car keys.

Of course as soon as he hit the unlock button, the rain suddenly slowed to a complete stop.

The two looked up at the traitorous sky at the same time before glancing at each other and bursting out into laughter.

“See Dai? There’s always a bright side,” Suga started, still giggling.

“Sometimes, you just gotta weather the storm to get to it.”
