All Luz wants to do is tell King about her new glyph, but she doesn’t get the chance to for over an hour. Thanks to the mess made by him and Hooty (Luz doesn’t know what the heck happened to those toys while she and Eda were out, and she’s honestly too afraid to ask), King is forced by Eda to help Hooty clean up the living room, keeping him too busy for Luz to tell him her news.
So, when King finally finishes tidying, flopping down on the couch and yawning, Luz wastes no time rushing over to him, a notebook in one hand and a pencil in the other.
“Hey, King, I’ve got something awesome to show you!” she says, sitting beside him.
King groans, rolling onto his side. “I’m tired…” he moans. “Sleep now, cool thing later.”
“Aw, c’mon. You’ll be so impressed! And then you can sleep, promise,” Luz says, by this point fidgeting with the anticipation of showing King the ice glyph she discovered on her trip to The Knee.
“Oh, fine…” he grumbles, sitting up on the couch. “What is it you wanna show me?”
“Well, remember why Eda took me to The Knee in the first place?” She pauses to allow him to answer her question, but King’s dumbfounded expression tells her that he forgot. “It was about looking for more glyphs,” Luz prompts him, not mad that he forgot (she’s plenty forgetful too). “And… Ta-da!” Luz drags the pencil across a sheet of paper, drawing the new glyph before holding it out to show King. “Look! Look what it does!” she says, and Luz taps the end of the pencil on the paper, activating the glyph.
As King shrieks in surprise, the piece of paper transforms into a small block of ice, plopping onto the couch between them and beginning to melt. King stares at the bit of ice, his eyes widening.
“Ice?!” Grinning, King climbs up Luz’s arm and settles on her shoulder. “That’s so cool, Luz!”
She giggles. “Was that an ice pun?”
“I didn’t mean it to be, but sure,” he says. “So… you know two glyphs now? That’s awesome.”
“Aw, thanks, buddy,” Luz says. “That’s so… ice of you.”
King snorts, spluttering with laughter as he scrabbles up onto her head. And, nestled on her head, he falls asleep instantly.
(Which is a trait Luz is envious of.)
As King dozes on her head, Luz picks up the now tiny piece of ice, resting it on her palm as it continues to melt. It is only a piece of ice, but Luz can’t look away.
She made this. She used ice magic. The Island gave her the glyph and allowed Luz to learn her important second spell, the spell that will keep her out of the baby class at school and allow her to study alongside Willow and Gus (and Amity… if she’d like to).
Despite the biting cold on her palm, her heart is warm with happiness.
