Summary
He looks back at the water lapping at the edge of their raft. He doesn’t want to say it, but he doesn’t want to fall asleep, just in case he rolls off in his sleep and drowns. “Yeah. No, of course. It’s just, you know, isn’t it better to not be scared?”
She exhales. “Sometimes being scared is good. Scared keeps you alive.”
Ash doesn’t say it, but he thinks that Pokemon Masters are never scared and yet they stay alive.
“If you’re scared, Ash,” she says, “that’s not something to be ashamed of. I won’t even make fun of you.”
Ash furrows his brows, and hugs his knees a little tighter to his chest. He’s getting tired of the feel of salty air against his skin. He thinks, but doesn’t say: he’s not afraid of anything. His friends can be scared - they’re not trying to be Pokemon Masters.
So he can just be the brave one, for them. He can be a hero.
Or: Ash, as he goes through the first season. He's not afraid of anything, because a Pokemon Master wouldn't be afraid of anything.

Summary
His hand is tugged up, and moved so that it covers Deku’s mouth like a gag. He feels the other boy’s lips move, slowly. Repeating the same words over and over again.
Dread spreads through his chest.
Katsuki copies the movements with his own mouth, exhaling sound around them.
“I...can’t—” Katsuki stops. He is staring, but he knows he is not staring at Deku’s face. Who knows what he's staring at. He doesn’t know either.
“You can’t speak,” he says for Deku, and feels the other boy’s head move in an exaggerated nod.
This, Katsuki thinks, is pretty fucking bad.
Katsuki is blinded. Izuku is muted. Both of them are kidnapped. Things get worse.
