Words from Another Time

Summary:

“Come on, Pops! It’s not over yet! You can do it,” the memory of a voice calls.

OR

Remember that scene after Ace dies where Whitebeard hears Ace's voice in his head before Whitebeard starts unleashing his wrath on Akainu? This is my interpretation as to when Whitebeard heard the words for the first time before Ace died.

Notes:

Disclaimer: These characters belong to Eiichiro Oda, and the Funimation English Dub series. Also, I just wanted it to be known that I watch the show in the English dub, so those are the voices I imagine for the characters. No monetary gain is being made from this drabble. Set after Ace’s death in Episode 483: “Looking for the Answer - Fire Fist Ace Dies on the Battlefield” for obvious reasons. Also, much like Episode 405, that episode also had me a sobbing mess on the couch while my husband stroked my hair and let me bury my face on him as I lamented the fact that Ace and Whitebeard died together on the battlefield in Marineford…

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

As Whitebeard continues to fight against the Marine forces that took his son, his Ace, from him, the famed pirate Captain hears a distinct voice in his head.

“Come on, Pops! It’s not over yet! You can do it,” the memory of a voice and coordinating facial expression playing in his mind so clearly that Whitebeard can almost reach out and touch it.

The words and voice are Ace’s from another time, from a happier time and circumstance.

Whitebeard begins to think of the memory as he almost mechanically uses the power of the Tremor Tremor Fruit to dispose of the attacking Marine forces.

Those words had been said by Ace when he and Whitebeard were playing Liar’s Dice one night when the young Second Division Commander could not sleep. Despite Whitebeard’s gift for strategy and his age coupled with experience, the Captain could never defeat Ace in Liar’s Dice. In fact, no one in the entire crew could defeat Fire Fist Ace in the game of chance and strategy. (He won plenty of money off his crewmates with this knowledge.) Although he always won Liar’s Dice, Ace was never boastful about it, at least not when playing against Pops.

With the encouragement from those words resounding in his head, Whitebeard summons all his strength, preparing to slaughter those responsible for killing his precious son.

His temperamental, determined, and steadfastly loyal Ace.....

Setting his sights on Admiral Akainu, Whitebeard feels the fury and wrath overtake him.

“For you, Ace, I’ll never give up,” Whitebeard silently vows, reminiscent of his words to Ace on that night.

On that night, they were simply playing a dice game as father and son.

On this day, however, they were a father and son fighting for their lives in a battle they were destined to never see the other side of.

Notes:

Author’s Note: I have so much I want to say about Ace and Whitebeard’s relationship that the only way I can think to do them justice is to spam you all with Ace and Whitebeard drabbles like this one! All three of the drabbles I will be posting this week were written the very next day after my husband and I watched Episode 483 back in March or April. My sister and I are extremely close like Ace and Luffy, so that scene was particularly startling to me, as I’m the oldest of the two of us and I would never wish that pain Luffy felt on anyone, especially not my younger sister. Whitebeard quickly became one of my favorite One Piece characters after the Marineford arc, especially with the determination and dedication he had to try to save Ace’s life. Ace already was one of my absolute favorite One Piece characters since he showed up on the Alabasta arc and asked the Straw Hats to take care of his kid brother. Anyway, I could talk forever about Ace and Whitebeard’s relationship and how it impacted me, but I will let these three drabbles speak for themselves. If you enjoyed, please let me know through likes, kudos, or a comment, as those really encourage me to continue to write more after a hiatus of several years from my writing prior to this year. Until next time, dear readers! Have a wonderful day, afternoon, or night!
