The Tiniest Problem

Summary:

Bradley has an allergic reaction to his and Jake's new puppy.

Notes:

...I had to.

Work Text:

It had taken roughly two weeks for them to talk out their bullshit with each other, but once they did, they almost immediately fell into bed with each other. Bradley supposes years of sexual tension will do that to two people, but it’s not like he’s complaining.

Nearly a week after that, the Daggers learn they have three months of leave -- much more than any of them were expecting, regardless of their mission truly being a dangerous one.

Jake, much like any thirty-something year old who’s been given three months off work, decides he wants a puppy, and he wants Bradley to raise it with him. Bradley’s also not complaining about this, since he’s already deep in his descent of falling head-over-heels for the blond. He truly doesn’t mind, especially since he loves dogs -- puppies even more since they’re such cute little packages of fluff.

So they go to a local animal shelter and absolutely fall in love with a puppy that Jake immediately names Brisket, since he has to be aggressively from Texas and all that. Brisket already has both of them wrapped around his little paw, and Bradley struggles to keep himself together while watching Jake interact with Brisket as they go to bring him home.

Everything is perfect, except as the day goes on, Bradley feels a little bit of congestion building in his sinuses and his eyes are a bit itchy every few hours or so. It’s probably nothing, though, so he ignores it.

It’s not until later that night when things get worse.

They’re lying on Jake’s bed when Brisket trots into the room and stands at the end of the bed, whimpering. Jake glances over at Bradley with a look Bradley interprets as “can we let him on the bed with us, please?” and Bradley can’t say no to that. He nods and Jake reaches over to pick Brisket up and set him on the bed.

Brisket immediately lays between both of them and rolls onto his back, silently asking for belly rubs. Bradley can’t help but chuckle and give him what he desires. He’s already made himself at home, and Bradley doesn’t want to impede the fast progress.

After a few minutes of having Brisket on the bed with them, Bradley feels his arms begin to itch. He scratches at them absent-mindedly until he feels a bump and looks down to find hives on his arms.

“Shit,” he mumbles under his breath.

“What’s wrong?” Jake asks, looking away from Brisket. “Oh shit.”

“It’s fine. I’m fine. I’ll just… start taking some claritin or something.” Bradley doesn’t want Jake to have to even think about bringing Brisket back to the shelter.

“Bradley--”

“I’ll be fine, Jake. I promise. It’s just some hives.” Bradley rubs some of the hives on his arm in an attempt to stop them from itching without scratching them and making them worse.

“But you’re allergic to him.” Jake frowns.

“And I’ll take meds. It’ll be fine.” Bradley smiles softly in an attempt to get Jake’s mind off his allergic reaction.

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely, baby.” Bradley kisses Jake’s cheek.

Jake preens under the attention and focuses back on Brisket.
