Wylan didn’t know how they had succeeded in making Kaz agree to play with them, but he had agreed to do a water gun fight in the garden. They even had moved some furniture to create some shelters, because they wanted to play it seriously.
“So, we do three teams of two people,” Nina said, with a big smile on her face.
“Alright, but let’s make it more fun and not be our usual teams,” Inej added, gaining a surprising look from the others.
They all had thought that she would want to be in the same team as Kaz, so this proposition had surprised them, but it was a good idea, and everyone agreed with her.
“We let the chance decide what the teams will be,” Matthias said, already preparing some papers with their names on it, before putting them into a bowl, “Nina, Kaz and Jesper will draw the names.”
Everyone nodded, eager to know what the teams would be. The first one to draw a name was Nina, and she had a bright smile on her face when she read the name.
“I got Inej!” she said happily, already hugging her.
“Wylan, you’re with me,” Kaz said, in a neutral tone.
“Then I’m with Matthias,” Jesper said.
Wylan could see the disappointment on his boyfriend for not being in the same team as him.
“And to make it even more fun, the team who loses will pay for the pizzas!”
The conditions for the water gun fight were set and now the game was about to begin.
The three teams were scattered in the garden, each developing a strategy to win.
“The main problem is Jesper, you will have to divert his attention. Knowing the others, I will probably be the main target, at least I’m sure that Nina will do everything to win against me,” Kaz explained.
Wylan simply nodded; he knew that his friend was right. Jesper was the main problem with his perfect aim, and Kaz would be the main target, because he knew how much everyone wanted to win against the mastermind.
“As long as you keep Jesper busy, I should be alright.”
“You really think you can win against all of them if Jesper isn’t here?”
The smirk he gave him told him everything. Kaz Brekker would not let anyone win, he knew that he could win, and for that he needed the biggest menace to be out of his way.
“Fine, I will do my best.”
“Perfect, then hide this gun in your pocket,” Kaz said, giving him a mini water gun.
Wylan obeyed and was already thinking about how he would divert Jesper’s attention, he wanted to win, and for that he would do anything.
The water gun fight finally began.
Kaz and Wylan were hiding behind a table, and he dared to look and see what was happening. He saw that Nina was trying to shoot Matthias who was hiding behind a bush, they were too busy trying to spray each other to notice the others. Inej was nowhere to be seen, and that was the reason why it was Kaz’s job to get her, because he was the only one who could notice her. Jesper was approaching the table from one side.
“Now, Wylan,” Kaz ordered.
He got up and put his hands up in the air, showing that he was unarmed, still Jesper aimed at him.
“You would really shoot your boyfriend? I am unarmed.”
His boyfriend grinned at him.
“I can’t trust you, darling. You’re in Kaz’s team, I don’t know what super plan he had in mind, but we won’t let you win.”
Wylan closed off the distance between them.
“Yeah, well, I’m not following his plan, I’m following mine and it may imply kissing you.”
He was now really close to Jesper, and with a small smile on his lips, he slowly pushed away the hand holding the gun and pinned him against the wall, giving him a small kiss on the lips.
His boyfriend staggered against the wall and grinned.
“As much as I want to do all of that, you’re my enemy right now, Wy. I know what you’re doing.”
He discreetly grabbed the mini gun in his pocket, he just needed to shoot him, if he wanted to win, but he felt bad to betray Jesper like this.
That moment of hesitation was his downfall.
Jesper smiled and kissed him back, he even dropped his gun to cup his face in his hands and kissed him even harder.
“I’m sorry, Wy,” he whispered between two kisses.
Wylan didn’t understand what he meant until he felt the coldness of the water on his back, startling him.
“You’re out,” Inej said, winking at him with a proud smile on her face.
“What?”
Jesper freed himself from the wall and grabbed his guns.
“You see, if we want to win against Kaz, we needed to eliminate you first, also Nina convinced us to make an alliance,” he said proudly, looking at Wylan’s shocked face.
“But I saw her trying to shoot Matthias.”
“Just a distraction, darling and it worked perfectly. We knew how Kaz think, so we had to play with that and try to predict his plan, which I’m pretty sure implied you diverting my attention.”
He blew out a kiss and winked at him, before joining the fight again.
Wylan looked at them, still surprised by the plan they had drafted, it showed just how much they wanted to win against Kaz.
The only problem was that he had already foreseen all these possibilities and had drafted a plan around them. He had known that everyone would have tried to outsmart him, and Kaz Brekker was not going to let that happen, so yeah, he had sacrificed Wylan, but with that he had assured their victory.
“Good luck, then,” Wylan replied with a proud smile.
He watched them walk away, when his boyfriend got sprayed right in the face by a Nina who didn’t look guilty at all.
“Our alliance was until we got Wylan, but you are still the main danger,” Inej said with a wicked smile.
“Well, I guess you are out too, Jes,” he said, bursting with laughter at the face his boyfriend had made when he got sprayed right in the face.
Jesper grumbled, which made him laugh harder. He laughed and laughed, he could not stop, the surprise had been too great.
Something had gone wrong in Kaz’s plan, because he lost against Inej. The last duel had been between the two of them, because when Matthias had seen the girl team betray Jesper, he had decided to at least eliminate one of them, and his target had been Nina. Their fight had ended up with both eliminating the other at the same time, which only had left Kaz and Inej on the battlefield.
Kaz knew that Inej was faster and more agile, she dodged the water every time he tried to spray her, but at one point, she had closed off the distance between them and had shot him right in the chest, earning a well-deserved victory.
“Inej, you were amazing! And I’m so happy that we won!” Nina said, hugging her tightly.
“You are never going to see the end of it,” Matthias whispered to Kaz, seeing how his girlfriend was already ready to boast the merits of Inej.
“Shut up, Helvar. You still have some pizzas to order, your team got eliminated first.”
The Fjerdan rolled his eyes but smiled, he was happy that Kaz did not win for once. They were all happy to have foiled the plans of the great mastermind, it had been a team effort, but still Inej was the one who had done the hardest part.
Later that night, after eating the pizzas that Matthias and Jesper offered, everyone decided to sleep here. When everyone was asleep, Wylan got out of his bed and met Kaz on the balcony.
“You let her win, didn’t you?” he asked, fully knowing that he would never tell him the truth.
“I don’t know what you are talking about.”
He smiled, and his friend did not even dare to look at him. Wylan knew what it was, not being able to shoot the person that you loved, even for a simple little game, after all he hadn’t been able to shoot Jesper, he couldn’t bear seeing the betrayal on his boyfriend’s face. So, of course, Kaz hadn’t been able to shoot Inej, he probably had wanted to see the smile on her face when she won, full of pride and joy.
Kaz Brekker had sacrificed his victory for Inej’s smile and laugh, even if it also meant that Nina would never let him see the end of it.
