Sere’s fingers stilled. That was a real wager, one she couldn’t dismiss out of hand.
“You’re bargaining now?” she asked, quiet and almost amused.
Amsi lifted her chin higher, eyes steady. “I learned from you.”
Or, Sere and Amsi, Kaz and Inej's 14 and 10 year old daughters, play hide and seek. Sere is reluctant to play, but perhaps gets too invested.

Kaz tilted his head, just enough to glance at her. There was something frayed about the gesture.
“I’m not going to collapse,” he muttered, though the breath behind it wavered.
Inej looked at him fully then, no hint of amusement in her face. His defences were cracked open enough for her to see what lay beneath them.
“You can’t lie your way through a fever.”
Or, Kaz falls ill overnight, and Inej notices before he wakes.

Kaz swirled the liquid in his glass. “We got in, we got out. No casualties. No loose ends. So it was fine.” He finally met Damian’s gaze. “Fun wasn’t the objective, might I add.”
“But you had fun anywhoozle!” Dame pointed out, his grin widening. Kaz scoffed, shaking his head as he took a slow sip of his drink. If the drink doesn’t kill me by tomorrow morning, Damian will, that’s for sure. Damian, undeterred, continued, “And we’s all barely got a scratch! Did youse even see the looks on those stads' faces?”
