Work Text:
"Hood!" Steph's voice hissed over the comm. Jason frowned;
"Blondie. I'm on a stakeout."
"Dude, oh my Gods. I need your help." She sounded distressed.
He straightened up, already disassembling his gun.
"What's wrong? Where's your location?"
"Okay, so I'm in my apartment and guess what I saw?" Steph's tone changed but Jason was too busy packing up his gear to notice.
"An LoA agent? Or is it a Rogue? Are you in danger?"
"Huh? Oh! Oh. No, I'm fine."
Jason paused, then let out a breath.
"Then, what's the issue?" Now he was just confused. First she sounded franic, then she said she was fine?
"Dude. Gods, I'm so stupid."
"Ste- Spoiler. What's wrong!"
"I forgot to read the new chapter for the book club!" She just about wailed.
Jason blinked at nothing. After a few seconds of listening to Steph's dramatics, he pressed his lips together, shoulders shaking with violent laughter.
"I-" He choked, "I'll be over in a few minutes."
He glanced at the building he was staking out, still shaking a little from repressed laughter. That can wait another day he decided, strapping his disassembled gun to his back.
Twenty minutes later, Jason landed as softly as he could on her fire escape. He ran a hand through his still-damp hair before knocking on the window. Steph poked her head out from her kitchen, brightening upon spotting him.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" She cheered, practically yanking him through the window. With minimal stumbling, Jason found himself seated at her kitchen table, book in hand.
"What part did you stop at?"
"Uhh. I think it was right after Kate listened in on Mr. Curtain's meeting with SQ and Martina."
"Okay, that's at the end of that chapter, and the next one isn't too long. You can read it by tomorrow." Jason set down the book, trying his best not to grimace. He apparently wasn't successful because Steph gave him a look.
"Your shoulder acting up?" She asked, tilting her head.
"It's fine," he blurted, on reflex. She frowned and stood up.
Jason sighed, reaching to grab his mug of tea. His hiss of pain was loud enough Steph came marching over immediately, ice packs in hand.
"Dummy. You probably used your grapple too much."
"I do not need to be mother-henned by yet another person," he grumbled, but he took the ice gratefully.
"...Are these cat ice packs?"
"Listen, they didn't have any others at the store-"
