Chapter 1
Notes:
I just needed to write something where Zoro was a single dad. That's literally my only inspiration for this fic.
Thank you Joxxellin for being my beta for this!

Chapter Text
Sanji was not looking forward to this class. He understands that it’s required for culinary students, but he would much rather be actually cooking than taking another health sciences class. He thought that as a junior, he would have more hands-on courses but it seems like someone is out to get him.
Don’t get him wrong, he completely understands the importance of health science. What he doesn’t understand is why he has to keep taking courses that just keep teaching the same thing. Luckily, he’s taken similar classes that also stress the importance of personal well-being and its relation to biology and whatnot so he’s hoping for an easy A.
He takes a seat in the middle of a row near the back. Even if he’s hoping to breeze through this class, he’s still going to take it seriously. Once he sits down, he sees a familiar greenhead a few rows ahead of him.
Shit.
Why is that stupid mosshead in this class?! For the life of him, Sanji can’t remember what the other man is studying. Sanji and the greenette, Zoro, met in their freshman year when their mutual friend Luffy introduced them. Even though they all have the same friends and often hang out together with their crew, they are far from friends.
What is that stupid musclehead doing in this class?
From what Sanji has seen from him, all Zoro came to university for was kendo. He never stays on campus to study with everyone else and Sanji has never seen him walk into a classroom in all his three years going to the same university. Sanji chooses to ignore that being in different departments might contribute to that.
It’s not the first time Sanji has thought that Zoro only uses his kendo scholarship to breeze through school, and it’s definitely not something he’s kept to himself. He can’t count the number of times he and Zoro got into a fight about the assumptions they’ve made about each other.
Shaking himself out of his thoughts, Sanji turns his attention back to the front where the professor stands and starts going over the syllabus. Everything was pretty standard. The usual weekly assignments, quizzes, exams, and a project, were nothing new.
“As you can see, you are all required to complete a semester-long project that will be counted as your final exam grade and will be 10% of your final semester grade. Something that I did not include on the syllabus is that it is a two-person project. Now, before you get ahead of yourselves and try to partner up, I’ve already assigned partners. I’ve tried assigning it so that both partners are in different areas of study, so I’m hoping you all bring me some very interesting topics.”
For some reason, Sanji felt a sense of dread creeping up on him. He’s not the biggest fan of group projects but maybe he’ll get assigned a cute girl as his partner. He can only hope. The professor turned on the projector and put up a list of the groups. Sanji looks for his name, fingers crossed he has a good partner. His stomach drops once he finds his name and his partner.
Halfway down the second column was his name and partner:
Sanji Black and Roronoa Zoro
Sanji quickly looks to Zoro a few rows ahead. Zoro must have already found his name as he was sneering at Sanji from his seat. Neither move, not wanting to give the other the satisfaction of moving seats. After a few minutes of their stare-down, Zoro sighs and starts packing up his things to move.
Sanji braces himself for an argument but Zoro doesn’t say anything as he sits down.
They sit in silence for a few minutes, neither knowing what to say.
“What’s your major again?” Sanji decides to be the one to break the tension.
“We’ve known each other for three years and you don’t know what I’m studying?” Zoro gives him an unimpressed look and rolls his eyes, “I’m a health and exercise science major.”
“I’m a culinary arts major,” Sanji will admit he feels a little guilty about forgetting but it’s not like Zoro remembers his.
Just as he thought that Zoro replied, “Ya, I know. We’ve known each other for three years, I’m not an idiot.”
Sanji was taken aback, “Are you implying that I am?!”
“Well if the shoe fits, Shitty Cook. I’m surprised you made it this far though considering how obsessed you are with women. How do you manage to pay attention in class when you’re always wiggling around for some woman?”
Sanji knows that Zoro thinks he has some superiority complex, where he got that idea Sanji had no idea but to bring women into their argument was uncalled for.
“Whatever Shitty Cook, it doesn’t matter. All that matters is that we get a good grade on this stupid project,” Zoro cuts Sanji off from whatever insult he was about to make.
“Finally something we can both agree on. You better not expect me to do all the work though. I might not want a bad grade but I’m sure as hell not going to do this project by myself, Idiot Mosshead.”
Zoro rolls his eyes, “As if I can trust you to actually make an effort on something other than cooking. I’ll do the research if you’ll just show up and do the presentation at the end of the semester.”
Sanji is shocked. Let Zoro do the research?! As if!
“Hell no! If you expect me to let you do all the research you have another thing coming!”
Zoro sighs again , “Then how do you want to split the work, all-knowing one?”
“Once we have the topic figured out, how about we both do research on our own sections and have the other check it so we can at least try and work together? And when it comes to the presentation, we’ll just present our own research,” Sanji proposes. Zoro grumbles back in response, apparently, that is an acceptable plan to the mosshead.
“How about we meet once a week to work together and go over what we have so far? My classes are pretty spaced out so I have plenty of time throughout the week. I’m assuming you have kendo practice and have to regularly go to the gym or else you’ll deflate?” Sanji rolls his eyes, knowing that Zoro is going to make this difficult.
“I’m busy in the afternoons and evenings. The only time I’m free to meet is before noon or around lunch,” It surprised Sanji that Zoro wasn’t going to take the bait and start an argument.
“Well that’s the one time during the week I’m not free so it looks like it’ll have to be the weekends.”
“That’s fine, as long as we have it planned in advance I can work with that. But we have to meet off campus.”
“The hell, why? It’s easier to meet here and use the library,” Sanji is confused, most people live on or near campus, and it doesn’t make sense to go out of the way to meet somewhere else.
“I live in Kuraigana,” It was unnerving to Sanji how Zoro could say things with absolutely no emotion.
“Wait, Kuraigana ?! Isn’t that like a 30-minute drive here with no traffic? Why on earth would you commute that far?!” Sanji thought the 15-minute drive to Baratie was long, why is Zoro commuting so far?
“It’s none of your business Shit Cook. Either way, find somewhere in the middle to meet.”
“Damn, fine. There’s a cafe near Baratie that I study at sometimes if that works. I can send you the address.”
“Ya, whatever, that's fine.”
Zoro’s flippant attitude was starting to piss Sanji off, “Fine, then Saturday at 11 we’ll meet there. You better not be late!”
Since they had everything figured out for their project and it was just syllabus day, the professor let everyone go early.
Sanji ignores Zoro as he leaves and heads to his next class, dreading the next time he sees Zoro.

Summary:
It was their first project meeting and Sanji was surprised by how well it was going, but of course he would still find some reason to get annoyed by the mosshead.

Chapter Text
Sanji has not been not looking forward to this. Luckily the cafe he agreed to meet Zoro at really is just down the street from Baratie so he walks over after helping Zeff with some prep work. It’s a nice day outside so Sanji decided to sit on the patio, Zoro could suck it up if he didn’t like it. Sanji knew he got there early, so he’s expecting to wait a while for Zoro.
He’s typing up some research he found when he hears a car pull up. When he looks up he is shocked to find Zoro getting out. And even more surprising was that he is on time.
I didn’t realize the directionless idiot knew how to drive.
“Oi, Mosshead! Over here!” Sanji calls out to Zoro when he starts walking in the opposite direction of the cafe. He parked right in front of it, how could he get lost going such a short distance?
“I’m surprised you got here on time. What, did you leave a few hours ago to get here on time?” Sanji teases Zoro, expecting to start their usual banter.
“Shut up Shit Cook, I was in the area already.”
Zoro shocks Sanji again by not reacting to his teasing, did someone swap out with the mosshead?
Zoro sits down and they immediately start working. Sanji is surprised by how well it is going. They are working in what he would admit was companionable silence. They’re each doing their own research and just send each other an email if they want any of their work checked.
For that matter, Sanji doesn’t think they’ve said one word to each other since they started working. He is kind of surprised by how enjoyable of an environment it is working with Zoro. Even more surprising is that everything that Zoro has sent him to get his approval is actually really good information. He even gave good feedback on Sanji’s own work. It seems that Zoro is slightly smarter than Sanji was giving him credit for.
“Hey, we haven’t had lunch, I bet Zeff could whip up something for us if you wanted,” Sanji decides that an olive branch wouldn’t be totally unreasonable.
“Sure, what time is it?” Zoro looks up at Sanji expectantly.
“Ugh, why don’t you just check yourself? It’s about ten till 3.” Zoro immediately starts packing up his things.
“Shit! I have to go. I’ll send you what I have later.”
Sanji just sits there stunned as Zoro rushes out and speeds away in his car.
What the fuck just happened?! All I did was ask if he wanted lunch.
Sanji is pissed that Zoro just ditched with absolutely no reason, and right when he was going to admit that he was actually doing a good job.
He probably has some stupid gym date or something.
Sanji sighs and starts packing his own things. As he’s leaving he calls Luffy to see if he wants to grab something to eat. Unsurprisingly, Luffy immediately says yes and that he is already at his usual dining hall on campus. Sanji rolls his eyes at that and told him he would see him in 15.
***
“We were working and all of a sudden he just left! No explanation!” Sanji is ranting to Luffy, Nami, and Usopp about his project meeting with Zoro.
They had all known each other for a while. When he was first introduced to Zoro he was surprised to find out that he had known Luffy the longest of all their friends. Even more shocking was that he had somehow become best friends with Nami. Sanji still hasn’t gotten over his jealousy of that.
“Zoro is just busy right now. He even skipped our weekly lunch date the other day because he had something going on,” Nami always tried playing peacemaker between the two, it hadn’t worked yet but she was optimistic.
“A date with Mosshead?! I would love to take you on a date Nami-swan if that idiot ever ditches you again!” Sanji wiggles with excitement over a possible date with Nami.
“I’ll pass Sanji. Besides, he’s always busy this time of year so it’s no surprise.”
“Probably all that kendo practice he has, that stupid gorilla. I’m surprised he even shows up to class, it’s not like he has anything going on in that green head of his.”
“Weren’t you just saying something about how good his research was or something like that?” Usopp decides to remind Sanji of that unfortunate admission.
Luffy just laughs at Sanji, “Man, you’re really funny today Sanji!”
Sanji rolls his eyes at Luffy, he will never understand what goes on in that head of his. He decides not to contradict his friend and tells him he wasn’t joking at all. He changes the subject and starts talking about a new recipe he’s trying out that he hopes Zeff will put on the menu and misses the contemplative look Nami gives him.

Chapter Text
As the weeks progress, Sanji and Zoro keep meeting at the same cafe. Now that Sanji knows Zoro will ditch him before 3 p.m. each time, they start meeting earlier in the day. Sanji is surprised by how well it’s going. If he had to complain about anything it would be how Zoro is almost always late, but knowing him, it’s not that surprising.
Sometimes Zoro will leave earlier than Sanji is expecting, never giving him a real reason other than he’s busy. If Zoro wasn’t sending him constant email updates on his work, Sanji would think that he was trying to get out of doing it.
After the initial awkwardness, Sanji’s opinion of Zoro slowly improved. While they still antagonize each other, they’re mostly joking with each other rather than getting into actual arguments. He doesn’t remember the last time he actually felt that Zoro was trying to insult him. From his point of view, it looks like they’re on their way to being at least amicable with each other. Friends might be too strong of a word.
Sanji should’ve known that all that wouldn’t last forever though. It’s about halfway through the semester and the fall weather is really starting to settle in.
And Zoro hasn’t shown up to class for three days.
And Zoro skipped out on their meeting.
“Where the hell has he been all week?!” Sanji has met up with Luffy and Nami for Sunday brunch and is (unsurprisingly) ranting about Zoro.
“At home,” Luffy, the poor obvious boy answers around a mouthful of pancakes.
That only angers Sanji more and before he can start yelling again Nami gives her own answer.
“He’s busy! He had a…family emergency come up and hasn’t been able to leave home.”
“Tsk, ya right. I bet he just wanted a week off without work. Hey Luf, give me his address.”
Before Nami can stop him Luffy is already sharing Zoro’s contact information with Sanji. Sanji quickly pays for his food and heads towards the door. As he walks away he can hear Nami start scolding Luffy, he turns around to see what’s up and sees Nami hitting him over the head.
Eh, he probably took some of her food. Classic Luffy.
Sanji shrugs it off and heads towards Zoro’s place. He forgot that Zoro said he lived all the way in Kuraigana. Realizing he has a long drive ahead of him, Sanji ends up working himself up and questioning why Zoro would skip out all of a sudden with no explanation.
Finally! Why does he have to live so far away?!
Sanji is surprised to find out that Zoro lives in an actual house instead of an apartment. It’s a pretty modest house but he has to admit he’s impressed by how well-kept it seems.
He knocks and rings the doorbell a few times to be annoying and hears what must be Zoro yelling that he’ll be right there. Sanji wasn’t sure what to expect when Zoro opened the door but it wasn’t this.
Zoro opens the door looking like death incarnate.
He has severe bags under his eyes like he hadn’t slept in days. His clothes are a mess and ill-fitting. Zoro might not have the best fashion sense but Sanji has never seen him in such a ratty t-shirt and sweatpants with some pretty obvious stains.
Is that paint and food stains?
“Would you shut the hell up-” Zoro cuts himself off when he sees who is at the door, “Shit Cook?”
That knocks Sanji out of his shocked stupor, “Shit Cook? That’s all you have to say?! Where the hell have you been?! You've missed a ton of class and our project meeting! You better get your shit together and stop skipping! I’m not about to get a bad grade because you got lazy!”
Sanji keeps ignoring Zoro, who’s trying to hush him through his rant, he ditches him with no explanation, he deserves to listen to what Sanji has to say.
Before Sanji can tell Zoro to shove that “Hush” where the sun doesn’t shine, he hears a small voice come from inside the house calling for Zoro.
Does he have a child in there? What the hell?
Suddenly a small boy appears next to Zoro and grabs his pants, Sanji cringes at how dirty those sweats must be. The boy can’t be much older than 7 or 8. He had chestnut-colored hair and dark brown eyes. His nose was red and even though he seemed naturally tan, he looked almost sickly pale.
“What’s going on, who’s this?” The boy, who Sanji can’t stop staring at, sniffles and rubs his eyes.
Sanji just keeps looking at the two, wondering how the brute that Zoro is, will react to the child.
What. The. Fuck. Is happening right now?

Chapter Text
The minute the chestnut-haired boy appeared Zoro’s whole demeanor changed. He kneels down next to the boy and crouches to his eye level.
“Hey Chop, what are you doing out of bed? Are you feeling okay?” Zoro asks as he rests the back of his hand on the boy’s forehead.
“You’re still pretty warm buddy, go ahead and go back to bed. How does some soup sound?” At that, the boy whimpers a little.
“I know, I know. But you have to eat some food before you take any medicine Chopper,” It seems that this reasoning makes sense to Chopper, Sanji assumes that was his name, and he made his way back into the house.
Sanji stands frozen, watching the whole interaction between the two.
What on earth is happening right now?
“What is happening? Who was that, your brother or something?” Sanji can not keep his curiosity to himself.
He can see Zoro hesitate and think about how he would reply, “He’s my son.”
“Huh?”
Zoro rolls his eyes at Sanji’s response, “Come inside. You’re letting all the warm air out.”
Once Zoro shuts the door behind Sanji, he leads him through what Sanji is assuming is the living room and into the kitchen. It’s not a chef's kitchen but Sanji is impressed that the mosshead keeps such an organized kitchen.
“I need to make Chopper some soup so say what you need to say then leave.”
Sanji is about to agree and then immediately stops when he sees Zoro grabbing a can of tomato soup from the pantry and a pot.
“Stop stop stop! What are you doing?!”
“Umm, making soup?”
“The hell you are! You don’t give a child canned soup when they’re sick! All that processed shit isn’t good for him! Go sit down! I’ll make something so stay out of my way,” Zoro puts his hands up in surrender and sits at the bar across from the stove.
Sanji takes his place in the kitchen and starts opening cabinets to see what he’s working with.
It’s quiet while Sanji starts working on making some miso soup. Zoro surprises him when he clears his throat.
“I know you’re curious about Chopper.”
Sanji pauses, “It’s not my place to ask. I know it’s probably a sensitive subject since I know you’re not old enough to have a kid his age.”
Zoro chuckles, “Well, you’re right about that.”
They’re silent again before Zoro speaks up.
“I met Chopper in the orphanage he grew up in. I was 15 when I moved there with him. I had been placed in a few homes before then but none of them really stuck, something having to do with my attitude,” That kind of made Sanji chuckle.
“Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up, Cook. As I was saying, I was 15 when I met Chopper and he was 3. The minute I met that kid I knew that I would do everything I could to protect him. Apparently, he had been abandoned at a fire station when he was a baby. Even now, if I ever find out who ditched a kid as sweet as him, I’d probably get locked up for murder.”
Sanji can understand that. Even just seeing how Chopper interacts with Zoro, he can tell he is a good kid.
“Anyway, we were practically inseparable. He was my little brother. About a year after we met, I was adopted by this freak named Dracule Mihawk. He had been my kendo instructor for a few years at that point. I think he wanted to adopt a kid to catch a tax break, but I guess he’s okay.”
Sanji thinks this Mihawk person sounds a bit shady but to each their own.
“About a month or two after I was adopted, Chopper was adopted by the doctor of the orphanage, Hiriluk. He was a good man. He and Mihawk made sure that me and Chopper were able to keep in touch and he let me come over to hang out with Chopper almost every week.”
By the way Zoro talks about Hiriluk, Sanji can tell the story is about to take a turn for the worse.
“A couple of years went by like that. Mihawk adopted my older sister, Perona, and we all had weekly dinners together,” Zoro rubs the back of his neck and looks towards the hallway where Sanji assumes the rooms are.
“Umm, two years ago when Chopper was about 7, Hiriluk died from a disease that he had been secretly suffering with. Chopper was put back in the system and sent back to his old orphanage. I was 19 then and was only in my first year of college but I knew that I wanted to adopt Chopper. I don’t know what I would have done if someone else had adopted him and taken him away.”
Sanji has his back to Zoro, he’s cutting up some tofu for the soup and slows down as Zoro continues.
“Luckily I had Mihawk’s support. It was a little difficult to show that I was responsible enough to raise a kid and that I could support us,” Zoro laughs a little, “Mihawk really was a lot of help though. He’s a rich wine fanatic so he helped me get a good lawyer. We found out that my parents had left me some money before they passed and it was enough that I could get the house and show that I was dedicated to taking care of him. I had also been working as a kendo instructor for Mihawk for a while so I already had a steady job that paid. After a few months of going to court and getting things ready, I became Chopper’s legal guardian and here we are.”
By the end of his story, Sanji had finished the soup and was just stirring it, his back still towards Zoro.
“I’ve been gone this week because some idiot let their kid go to school with the flu and Chopper got sick. I would normally ask Mihawk or Rona to help out but they’ve been busy so I had to stay home during the day and have them babysit while I went to work in the evenings.”
They are quiet for another minute. Once Sanji realizes Zoro was done talking he finally spoke up.
“I’m sorry Zoro,” Sanji doesn’t think he can face Zoro right now. How could he think such awful things about the man when it was so obvious that none of it was true?
“It’s fine. You didn’t know. Besides, I should’ve told you I couldn’t meet instead of just totally skipping.”
This makes Sanji turn, “No! You don’t get to apologize! It’s not your fault at all! I was the one who made awful, wrong assumptions about you. It wasn’t fair of me to assume that you were trying to get out of working.”
Sanji looks away again, thinking of his own childhood.
“Besides, it would be pretty hypocritical of me if I wasn’t understanding of your situation.”
Zoro gives him a puzzled look, “I didn’t even tell you though? And besides, it’s not like you could’ve guessed.”
Sanji heaves out a sigh, “I think I understand a little more than you think. You’re not the only one who hasn’t shared much about his family.”

Chapter Text
Sanji can tell Zoro wants to say something but he cuts him off.
“You got your turn, now shut up and listen. It’s my turn.”
At that, Zoro’s mouth snaps shut and he smirks a little at Sanji’s authoritative tone.
“My childhood was definitely different from yours and Choppers, but I was also adopted. Gosh, how old was I? Six or seven I think? I’m not sure, I try not to think about life before Zeff.”
This surprises Zoro, who thought that Zeff was Sanji’s father. Zoro has only met Zeff a handful of times but every time he always notices that they look like father and son.
“My…birth father, Judge, was abusive. I was born the third of quadruplets, all boys, and had an older sister. I think I got the most out of the abuse because I so obviously preferred my mother and wasn’t into anything that Judge wanted us to learn. At first, it was tolerable, but it really got bad after my mother died. I learned later that she had some complications after my brothers and I were born and it was only a matter of time before it took her.”
Sanji had turned away from Zoro when he started telling his story. Zoro was glad for it, if he had been looking at Zoro he would have seen his knuckles grow pale from how hard he is clenching his fists. Zoro is furious. He knows he and the Cook argue all the time. But child abuse?
He takes a breath to calm himself. Sanji hears him and tenses up but keeps talking.
“Reiju, my older sister ended up calling CPS on Judge and we were all put in the system,” Sanji chuckles, “You should have seen his face when he realized all his prized soldiers were getting taken from him.”
The “soldier” comment is concerning to Zoro but he decides that this isn’t really a story that allows for questions.
“We were lucky. No one wants to adopt five abused kids. Then we met Zeff. God, he scared us all so much. You’ve met him. Imagine it, this huge man with a prosthetic leg walking up to five malnourished kids. The moment he saw us though, he said he wanted to adopt all of us. Even to this day, I think he’s crazy for doing it.”
“I’ve never seen anyone else our age at Baratie.”
Zoro’s sudden comment makes Sanji jump, he looks back at him, “I’m the only one that is interested in cooking. I think that’s how I ended up getting so close to Zeff. A shared passion and all that. Now that we’re older though, we’ve all gone our own way. Luckily, when the court took us away from Judge, we were able to keep the trusts that our mother had made for us so Zeff didn’t have to try and put five kids through college.
None of my siblings go to the same university as us, but we all still come home for holidays, birthdays, and monthly weekend trips. Well, that last one has been a little more difficult now that we’re all near the end of our studies but it’s still nice every once in a while.”
Sanji sighs and finally turns and faces Zoro, “Either way, I understand the power of a found family. Hell, look at what Luffy has done with all of our crew,” Zoro and Sanji both laugh at that.
“Yeah, he sure made a family out of us.”
Sanji’s smile falls a little, “I’m still sorry for making such bad assumptions about you all this time. I hope you can forgive me and still work on this project with me.”
Zoro shifts his weight in his seat, “There’s no need to apologize. You and I both know that I’ve also made some pretty wrong assumptions about you. How about we call it even and start on a clean slate?”
Sanji gives him a blinding smile, “Sounds like a plan to me Mosshead!”
Zoro groans at the nickname and Sanji laughs at him.
“I’m done with the soup, by the way, how about you get his meds while I make him a bowl.”
Zoro agrees and they both go about their assigned tasks. Once Sanji has the soup plated up with some water and crackers on a tray, he tries handing it off to Zoro.
“Why don’t you take it in there with me, Chopper’s been home with me all week and would love to meet someone new. I know he didn’t forget that there was someone at the door and it’ll be easier if you introduce yourself instead of me telling him. Besides, he won’t believe me that I made this, so might as well take credit.”
Sanji hesitates but agrees.
The minute they walk into Chopper’s room Sanji can tell that Zoro loves him. His room has a whole corner dedicated to stuffed animals, a few he recognizes as arcade prizes Zoro won when they went for Usopp’s birthday last year, and he has a strange variety of books for a kid. From what Sanji can see, he has at least four shelves full of books. There seems to be a decent amount of manga, but if he looks closely, the kid has a ton of medical books.
What is Zoro teaching this kid?
Sanji sees some posters for popular anime that are airing right now, and not surprising, but also a few that are definitely sword-related. Of course, Zoro would make his kid watch an anime with a bunch of swordsmen.
He brings his attention back to Chopper and Zoro. The latter helps Chopper sit up in bed so he doesn’t spill anything. By the glances Chopper keeps giving him, Sanji can tell he’s nervous but also curious about the stranger in his room.
Sanji hands him the soup, “Hi Chopper, I’m Sanji! It’s nice to meet you! I have to say, I really like your room, especially your Ponyo poster.”
Chopper brightens at the mention of the Ghibli poster. He smiles and starts wiggling, “It’s nice to meet you too. But it’s not like that makes me happy or anything, no way.”
Sanji laughs at the obvious lie.
“Are you friends with Papa Zoro?”
Sanji chokes on his laugh at that and shares a look with Zoro.
Papa Zoro? Why is that so cute?
Almost as if Zoro can read his mind, he glares at Sanji, challenging him to say anything about it.
“Yeah, Sanji is my friend. We go to school together. He’s training to become a chef.”
Chopper lights up even more, if that’s even possible, “Really?! Does that mean you’ll keep making good food for us? Papa Zoro is a terrible cook. Aunty Rona and Mihawk always have to drop off meals when he tries to make dinner.”
“Hey!” Zoro flicks Chopper’s forehead and jokingly glares at him, making Chopper giggle.
The little glimpse Chopper gives Sanji into their family dynamic makes him laugh.
“Of course, I’ll make some food for you again, Chopper.”
As Chopper rejoices and brags to Zoro about getting to eat good food, Sanji looks at the clock in the room and is shocked at what time it is.
“Shi-, shoot I have to go! I told Zeff I would cover the dinner rush tonight,” Sanji is enjoying his time with the two but he knows if he is late, Zeff will rip him a new one.
Chopper says bye and Sanji promises to make him some food again soon. As Zoro walks him to the door, he notices Sanji starts looking nervous.
“Everything good Cook?” He’s not sure what he would do if Sanji was uncomfortable around him now that he knows about Chopper.
“You know, if you want, umm,” Sanji rubs the back of his neck and avoids Zoro’s eyes, “Umm, we can meet here. Only if you want! I know it probably isn’t easy trying to find a sitter so if it’s easier for you to meet here for the project, I don’t mind Chopper being there. And you know, it would be easier to keep my promise to cook for him if I’m already going to be here.”
Zoro is shocked that Sanji actually plans to keep that promise, and from the sound of it, he intends to do it frequently, “Uh, yeah. That works for me. I don’t mind and I know Chopper would love that.
“Awesome, then same time as usual next weekend,” Now that Sanji’s embarrassment is finally settling in he quickly waves bye and leaves.
Even after watching Sanji leave, Zoro stands at the front door for a couple of minutes processing.
Why was he suddenly so excited for next weekend?

Chapter Text
Sanji knocks on Zoro’s front door the following weekend. After talking throughout the week, they decided to push their meeting so that Sanji can make dinner, then they would start working. All week he has been looking forward to seeing Chopper again. He keeps having to tell himself that that is the only thing that he’s been looking forward to this weekend.
Sanji is surprised to see that it is Chopper who answers the door. Not surprisingly, Zoro comes running up behind him.
“Chopper, what have I told you about answering the door without me?” Zoro sighs, apparently, this was not the first time.
“But it’s Sanji!” Chopper counters, jumping up and down.
Sanji just watches the two go back and forth. It is obvious that Zoro is a good dad, but it’s interesting to see him really fulfill the role and scold Chopper while simultaneously teaching him.
Sanji subtly slides by the two and makes his way into the kitchen. It takes them a couple of minutes to join him, and by the tired look Zoro gives Sanji, Chopper is a better arguer than Sanji gave him credit for.
“What are you making today, Sanji?!” Chopper really does have too much energy for a kid who just got over the flu.
“Well, since you were just sick, I’m going to make some miso soup again and some onigiri.”
Chopper and Zoro’s eyes widen. Sanji looks at them confused before Zoro explains.
“Onigiri is my favorite,” Zoro looks a little embarrassed. Chopper furiously nods his head at Zoro’s admission.
“Oh… A happy coincidence then. I’ll remember that so I can make it again for you,” As Sanji turns back to rinsing the rice, he chooses to ignore Zoro’s blush.
Sanji lets Chopper help him shape the onigiri once it’s time, he doesn’t trust Zoro in the kitchen so he sends him to set the table. Sanji can’t help but smile at the onigiri Chopper is making. Instead of triangles like Sanji showed him, they’re more like ovals, but he’s so proud of them Sanji doesn’t have the heart to correct him.
Dinner is a hit. Chopper and Zoro are both scarfing down their food so fast Sanji asks if they’ve eaten since he was here last. Chopper laughs while Zoro looks away embarrassed and explains that it was Perona’s turn to bring them dinner and her food is always strange. That worries Sanji but he decides to let it go.
After dinner is cleaned up, they all go into the living room. Chopper turns on a movie while the adults start getting to work.
Well, they try to work.
They keep goofing off with Chopper and watching his movie. By the time it gets dark, they haven’t accomplished anything.
All of a sudden Chopper stands up and looks at Zoro, “Can Sanji spend the night and have a sleepover?!”
Sanji is shocked by such a small child yelling and then processes the question. He also looks over at Zoro to see what he’s going to say. From the way Zoro looked at Sanji, it was obvious he didn’t want to answer, raising his eyebrows in question. Is that okay? He seems to ask.
Sanji chuckles a little and nods slightly, telling Chopper that he would love to. At that, the boy runs to his room, insisting that for a proper sleepover, they need pillows and blankets for a fort.
Once he leaves, Sanji hears Zoro sigh, “Thanks for agreeing, but if you have things to do, you don’t have to stay.”
“Zoro, I’m an adult. I know how to say no. But wouldn’t Chopper rather have one of his friends sleep over? I mean I know I’m cool and all but…”
Zoro knows what he means, “I’ll be honest, Chopper doesn’t have that many friends. He’s changed schools a lot because of the whole adoption thing and it’s hard for him to relate to the other kids since their families are so much different. And let’s be honest, he’s also a lot smarter than them all.”
That last comment makes both of them laugh. Zoro tells him he can borrow some clothes to sleep in and get cleaned up in his room. Sanji agrees and follows after him. It was his first time seeing the other man’s room and he wasn’t really surprised by anything.
There weren’t very many personal touches. A few photos are scattered here and there of Chooper and who he assumes are Perona and Mihawk. The most prominent features are the three swords he has displayed. Again, not very surprising, but still interesting to see a little more of what kind of person Zoro really is.
After getting cleaned up and changed, Sanji heads back into the living room to see Zoro and Chopper setting up a blanket fort.
Zoro looks up when he walks in and is about to say something when he suddenly pauses. Sanji can see Zoro’s eyes taking in Sanji in his clothes, obviously drowning in them. He looks…pleased? Zoro then realizes what Sanji just caught him doing and looks away shyly. Thankful Chopper interjects before it can get too awkward.
“Sanji, Sanji! We made a blanket fort! Now we all have to lie down and watch a movie! Those are sleepover rules!” Sanji chuckles at the determined look Chopper is giving him.
“Okay, okay, what movie did you want to watch, Chopper?”
They end up turning on a Ghibli movie and all try to fit into the fort. Unsurprisingly, it’s a little small for a child and two grown men, but they do their best to get comfortable. Not even halfway through the movie Chopper has fallen asleep between the two and by the end of it, everyone has succumbed to exhaustion.
***
Sanji blinks awake, confused as to where he is. He remembers staying the night at Zoro’s and falling asleep in the fort Chopper built and relaxing back in the pillows. They must have moved throughout the night because it was a lot more comfortable than he remembers it being last night. He finally fully opens his eyes and is shocked by what he comes face to face with.
It was obvious now that they moved during the night. Chopper is cocooned between the two men. But that isn’t what shocked Sanji so much, but rather the fact that they also shifted so close together that Zoro’s face was only a few inches away from his own.
Sanji has never been this close to Zoro before, well except for when they’re fighting but he’s not really paying attention to his face then. Sanji sees a faint scar going from Zoro’s forehead down to the top of his cheek.
How have I never noticed that? When did he even get such a weird scar?
Sanji didn’t realize that while he’d been inspecting Zoro’s face, the other had also woken up. By the time he notices this, Zoro is just calmly staring right back at him.
Realizing he’s been caught, Sanji scurries to get up without waking Chopper, “Umm, I’ll make us some breakfast before heading out. I can’t stay today because of work.”
Zoro just nods and starts waking up Chopper while Sanji starts breakfast.
Sanji is flipping pancakes when they both join him in the kitchen. It’s obvious neither of them are morning people. Chopper keeps rubbing his eyes and shuffles to the closest bar stool while Zoro yawns and pours himself a cup of coffee.
They eat breakfast in silence, everyone slowly waking up still. After breakfast, Zoro insists that he clean so Chopper and Sanji can hang out some more before he has to leave.
“You know, if you want, you guys could come by Baratie sometime and I can treat you,” Sanji extends the offer as they walk him to the front door.
Chopper lights up, asking if that means he would be able to eat even more of Sanji’s food.
“Well of course Chopper! I wouldn’t invite you only to have Old Man Zeff cook!”
Chopper expectantly looks at Zoro, who apparently knows what he is about to ask, “Not tonight Chop, you know we have plans with Rona and Mihawk.”
“Oh, they’re free to come as well if you want to come tonight. I’m only scheduled to stay until dinner prep so I’ll be available after that.”
“Don’t feel obligated, we can always come another night. We’ve already monopolized enough of your time this weekend.”
Sanji laughs at that, “I didn’t know that you knew how to use the word ‘monopolize’, I’m impressed, Mosshead. But don’t worry, I wouldn’t offer if I didn’t want to. Prep should be done around 6:30, so be there by 7.”
With that, Sanji says bye to Chopper and heads to his car. They both wave as he drives off, Chopper using his whole body to jump and wave at Sanji. He insists that they keep waving until they can’t see his car. Zoro rolls his eyes but indulges him.
Once they’re back inside, Zoro sends Chopper to his room, telling him he has to have his homework done before they go to dinner. As Chopper runs to his room, Zoro grabs his phone and dials Perona.
“What do you want?”
“Hello to you too, Perona. What a nice way to answer the phone. Should I tell Mihawk that his lessons on etiquette paid off?”
Perona scoffs, “Like you’re one to talk you ape. Now, what do you want? Are you going to cancel? You’re not getting out of it this week, I want to see my cute nephew.”
Zoro is glad she can’t see him roll his eyes, “No I’m not canceling, I’m just letting you know there is a change of plans. We’re going to Baratie at 7 instead of meeting here.”
“Baratie? Isn’t that like a really nice restaurant? Why do you want to go there? Did you do something bad and need to soften the blow when you tell Mihawk?”
“Rona, shut up! No, it’s nothing like that! I’ll let you but only if you agree to come over and help me find something to wear,” Zoro is praying that she’s nosy enough for that bribe to work.
“Hold on. You are asking me to help you pick out something to wear?”
There’s silence on the other end of the line for a moment.
“Who are you and what have you done with my gorilla of a brother? Because the Zoro I know would never ask for fashion advice unless he was desperate or trying to impress someone.”
Zoro is again thankful that she isn’t here in front of him or she would definitely make fun of his rising blush.
“Yes, I’m asking for help, Perona. If you’re not going to agree then just forget about it.”
“No, no, no! I’ll help, I’m just surprised. You said dinner is at 7? I’ll be there at 4.”
“4? Isn’t that a little too early?”
“Well dear brother, I doubt you have anything acceptable to wear so we have to have time to go shopping, and if you’re driving, even with directions we’ll need to give ourselves plenty of time to get there.”
Zoro grumbles, he can’t really argue with her, his closet is pretty pathetic and they won’t talk about the last time they tried going out for family dinner. Zoro was an hour late and Chopper looked like he was about to die from hunger.
“Fine, I’ll see you at 4,” Zoro hangs up. He runs his hand down his face, exacerbated and already exhausted from talking to Perona. What has he gotten himself into?

Chapter 7
Summary:
Zoro agreed to have weekly family dinner at Baratie with Sanji. What could go wrong?
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Zoro hears a knock at the door and checks the clock. She’s early. Damn impatient woman.
Zoro sighs, already regretting asking Perona for help with this. He’s barely turned the doorknob before she is already pushing her way in.
“Where is my cute nephew?” Of course, she’s already demanding things.
“He’s getting ready. You can go to his room but I think his outfit is fine. Considering all the clothes you and Mihawk have bought him he should look good.”
Perona hits him over the head, knowing he didn’t mean that as a compliment, and heads to Chopper to make sure he’s not wearing any of the clothes Zoro has bought for him. After being reassured that Chopper is presentable, Perona returns to Zoro.
“Alright loser, we’re going shopping,” Before Zoro can argue with her, she holds up her hand, “No. We are not going to look through your closet, we don’t have enough time for me to tell you everything that is wrong with your fashion choices. Shut up. Get in the car. I’m driving and paying so I better not hear any complaints.”
Zoro’s mouth snaps shut. He might not like being pushed around by Perona, but he also knows how to pick his battles.
***
They’re shopping trip actually went pretty well. Chopper gave surprisingly good advice and helped convince Perona to get some things that Zoro didn’t absolutely hate.
Mihawk meets them all at Zoro’s and stops himself when he sees what Zoro is wearing.
“Zoro, are you okay? Has someone threatened you? You know, it’s okay to tell Perona to stop when she decides to play dress-up with you, you’re not children anymore.”
Zoro rolls his eyes, he would believe Mihawk’s mock concern if the man had said any of that with any emotion. And people wonder where he gets it from.
Zoro looks down at the outfit Perona picked out for him. The second they got back from the shopping trip, Perona practically shoved him into the shower. If he hadn’t told her to back off multiple times , he wouldn’t have been surprised if she had tried to dress him herself.
He wasn’t too upset with her choice though. He is wearing black, slim-fitting slacks with some black boots he luckily already owned. Perona paired it with a white button-down under a charcoal grey sweater. He was thankful that she stuck to his usual color scheme and didn’t try putting him in any bright colors. He also noticed that after he got ready, Chopper had changed to match with him and put on his own version of a grey ensemble.
“I’m fine, no need to make such a big deal. Now can we go already?” With that, the family all piles into Mihawk’s car, Zoro insisted he should drive since he knew where they were going, but everyone ignores him. Chopper even goes as far as to push him into the backseat with him.
***
The first thing Zoro notices when they walk into Baratie is Sanji flirting with a customer.
Of course, he’s flirting with some woman. What did I expect?
That makes him frown. Why did it bother him that Sanji is flirting with a woman? It’s not like it’s the first time he’s been subjected to Sanji embarrassingly complimenting some woman.
Zoro sees Perona give him a knowing look. When he sneers back at her she laughs and turns her attention back to the blonde man.
Chopper, oblivious to Zoro’s inner turmoil, calls out to Sanji. Upon hearing his name, Sanji looks to see who called out to him. Once he sees Chopper, he bids the woman goodbye and approaches the group. He picks up and spins Chopper around once he reaches them.
“Idiot Cook, I thought you were supposed to be working, not flirting with customers?” Zoro channels his unnamed feelings into anger.
“Tsk, like you’re one to talk! I was simply asking that majestic lady whether she enjoyed her food or not!”
Perona is giggling watching such an interesting interaction, she feels Mihawk lean towards her and whisper, “Is this some new, strange mating dance the kids are doing these days?”
That sends her over the edge. She was fully laughing while Mihawk just grunts, upset he didn’t get an answer. He instead ignores the two men arguing and asks the hostess to show them to their table. Noticing the rest of their group leaving, Sanji and Zoro finally calm down and join them.
Introductions are made once they all get settled. Zoro keeps giving Perona worrisome glances, he knows he can’t trust her to keep her mouth shut about anything that might embarrass him.
Shockingly, it wasn’t Perona that he needs to be worried about, it was Mihawk. Right when he drops his guard, Mihawk speaks up.
“Mr. Black, if you would be so kind as to order for us. Zoro said that you find great joy in feeding others and I do believe that you will hear no complaints from us no matter what you serve.”
Zoro almost gets whiplash from turning to look at Mihawk so fast.
“Oh, is that right? I didn’t realize Zoro talked so much about me to his family,” Sanji shoots Zoro a smug grin and chuckles when he notices the blush on the other man.
“If you’ll excuse me then, it seems I have some meals to prepare,” If it weren’t for the wide smile Sanji had, Zoro would think he is just being polite, but he knows that Sanji means every word.
Zoro watches him head to the kitchen and misses the gleam in Perona’s eyes before she speaks up, “So Zoro , you never told me how cute this little chef Sanji is when you told me we were meeting a friend for dinner. Let alone that he already knew Chopper, and pretty well from the looks of it.”
Zoro would really need to see a chiropractor after this dinner if they didn’t stop surprising him.
“Well of course he knows Chopper well. We’ve been working together on a project for school and he came over yesterday for it.”
“Yeah! We also had a sleepover with Sanji! We had so much fun, we built a fort and watched movies and everything!” This grabs Mihawk’s attention. Zoro makes a note to himself to remind Chopper to think before he speaks.
“I too am surprised at how well Sanji seems to know Chopper. If past experiences taught us anything, it’s that you are very protective of him. It took you months after the adoption to even introduce him to Ms. Nami. Let’s also not forget your last…friend. If I remember correctly, you didn’t even deem him worthy enough to tell him about Chopper.” Perona snorts at Mihawk’s use of the word ‘friend’, that man was nothing more than a passing infatuation.
“It’s not like it was on purpose! He just showed up when Chopper was sick. I forgot to let him know that I couldn’t meet for our project and when he showed up, Chopper took a liking to him. You know I can’t say no to the kid,” Zoro grumbles.
He’s about to start defending himself some more when Sanji approaches with another waiter carrying plates that Zoro assumed was their dinner.
He needs to remember to let the cook know how impressed he is with his choices. He of course made onigiri for Zoro; a filet for Mihawk that he insists pairs well with the bottle of wine he brought; Zoro isn’t exactly sure what he brought for Perona, but once she saw what looks like every vegetable known to man, she lights up and thanks him; Sanji places what looked like chicken nuggets in front of Chopper, Zoro chuckles at the look the boy gives the veggies sitting on his plate, once Sanji also set a plate of cotton candy next to that though, the gross veggies were long forgotten.
Zoro is curious as to what the cook made for himself. He’s a little surprised to see a plate of what looks like seafood pasta at his seat. He assumed that Sanji would make himself something more…flamboyant.
Not long after everyone got settled and started digging in, Zoro sees who he remembers as Zeff walking up.
“Hello everyone!” Zeff places a heavy hand on Sanji’s back and that makes him choke on his food.
“What are you doing here old man?”
“I’m just seeing how everything is going. It’s not every day you invite some friends over! I think the last person you brought to Baratie was that monkey boy, and if I remember correctly he just followed you around after finding out you were a cook.”
Yeah, that sounded like Luffy.
Sanji blushes at the insinuation Zeff is making, “Shut up you old geezer, and go back to the kitchen.”
Damn, he’s cute when he’s embarrassed.
Zoro keeps staring at Sanji while Zeff and Mihawk start a conversation about wine, no shocker there. Sanji starts talking with Chopper, trying to convince him to eat his veggies and that if he doesn’t he can’t have any of the cotton candy Sanji made for him.
Zoro smiles at the domesticity of the conversation. Zoro has a sudden, giddy warmth in the pit of the gut watching Sanji interact with Chopper like that.
Of course, Perona would interrupt that, “So, Little Brother, tell me a little more about your relationship with the chef. Because from where I’m sitting it seems like you have a big, fat C-R-U-S-H on the cute blonde.”
Zoro is lucky she was whispering, but that does nothing to hide the warmth that seems to take over his whole face.
He looks at her, he knows there’s no way to get out of her questioning. They’ve known each other for years and if he knows anything, it’s that she’s persistent.
He sighs in resignation, “I haven’t really thought about it if I’m being honest. I mean, watching him interact with Chopper makes me so fucking happy, but I know he’s just doing that to be friendly. I would jump at the opportunity to see if there’s any possibility we could be more than friends. And to actually be in a relationship with him?! But I have a freaking kid! We’re both still in school, Sanji doesn’t need to be burdened with something like that.”
Zoro backtracks a little, “Not that Chopper is a burden at all, I love him more than anything and wouldn’t change a thing. It’s just different when you’re getting into a relationship with that kind of drama and baggage. If we were to date, Chopper would always take priority and not everyone can understand that. Besides, I’m pretty sure he only likes women, and even if he was interested in men, there are so many better options. I mean we just started acting civil with each other and we’ve known each other for years.”
Perona is speechless for a minute, Zoro said he hadn’t really thought about it, but from the rant, he just went on that is definitely not the case. She doesn’t really know how to respond to his concerns, while they might not all be warranted, there isn’t much she can say that will reassure him. She just gives him a sympathizing look and pats his knee under the table, dropping the subject.
After letting everything out, Zoro’s whole demeanor changes.
Sweet, oblivious Chopper turns to him and asks if they can hang out with Sanji again sometime soon. Zoro didn’t even notice that everyone had already finished their meals. While Chopper might not have noticed his shift in mood, Sanji does and gives him a questioning look.
Zoro just replies with a pinched smile that they’ll just have to wait and see how things work out. That seems to appease Chopper as he gives Zoro a nod and turns to Mihawk to ask him if they’re going back to his house or Mihawk’s after dinner.
Everyone takes this as the cue to end the dinner. They all thank Sanji and Zeff for the great meal. As they prepare to leave, Sanji promises Chopper that he’ll try and see him soon. He lets Mihawk know that it was a pleasure meeting him and that he’ll let him know what he thinks of the wines he recommended. When it comes time to say goodbye to Perona, Sanji changes into his twirly self and tells her how much of an honor it was to meet such a beautiful and enchanting woman such as herself.
It is obvious to Zoro that it makes her uncomfortable, especially after their conversation at dinner, but she only kindly thanks him and follows Mihawk to the car.
Zoro doesn’t even give Sanji the chance to say anything to him. The moment Sanji turns to speak to him, Zoro grabs Chopper’s hand and starts guiding him to the door. He misses the confused look Sanji gives his back and pretends he doesn’t hear the way the other man calls out to him.
All the adults are quiet on the drive back to Zoro’s. Chopper fills the silence talking about everything from the newest surgical technique he read about to the newest anime he saw. Perona seems to be the only one willing to engage in conversation with him.
They do end up watching a movie when they get back, the same silence filling the living room.
Now that it’s getting late, Zoro walks Mihawk and Perona to the door, but before Zoro can close the door Perona pauses and turns around.
“You know you can talk to me about anything right, Zoro? I know we make fun of each other a lot and mess around, but I’m still your older sister.”
Zoro gives her a small smile, “Come on now, don’t make me start thinking you actually care.”
Contradicting his words, he pulls her into a bone-crushing hug. Perona doesn’t remember the last time they hugged.
Zoro must really feel like shit after that dinner.
It didn’t seem like Perona was the only one with concerns. After he and Perona broke apart from their hug, they saw Mihawk waiting for them. He gives Zoro a look.
Zoro is frozen for just a minute. He knows that look.
That look means he either has to grow up and talk to his dad about what is bothering him soon, or Mihawk is going to take matters into his own hands and find out what is wrong.
Zoro only responds to the look with a nod of his head and that seems to appease Mihawk as he gives his own nod back and heads to the car.
Perona turns to hug him again, “We’ll see you next week at Mihawk’s for family dinner.”
Her tone of finality gives no room for argument. Zoro agrees and bids them goodbye. After shutting the door, he turns and leans his head back on the hardwood.
Damn, I don’t want to go to class tomorrow.
Notes:
I'm normally not one to go into such detail about what someone is wearing but thought since I made such a big deal out of them shopping I might as well.

Chapter 8
Summary:
Zoro has been avoiding him. When Sanji rants to Nami and Luffy about it, he just makes everything worse.
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Zoro is lucky that Sanji is a good student. They only had to meet one more time before they were already done with their research, Zoro wouldn’t admit to Sanji but he had spent the entire week between their meetings working so they could be done faster.
It isn’t that Zoro started disliking Sanji again. Quite the opposite actually.
After agreeing that they don’t need to keep meeting weekly until it was time to prep for their presentation, Zoro takes that as an out and runs with it.
Now, Zoro likes to think of himself as a very self-aware man. He knows all about his feelings for the cook and has fully accepted them.
He also knows that he is very obviously avoiding said cook.
Luckily he doesn’t have to worry about meeting outside of class, so his main concern is ignoring him during their shared class. The one thing he doesn’t take into consideration though is Chopper.
He can’t fault the kid for liking Sanji so much without being a hypocrite. After only a week of not seeing Sanji, Chopper is trying anything to convince Zoro to let him come over.
Zoro hates that he’s such a good father.
He lets Sanji know that Chopper has been begging for him to come over again and they make a plan to meet at a park near Zoro’s house.
Sanji is initially thrilled at the prospect of hanging out with Chopper and Zoro again. But that excitement is quickly crushed when he realizes what Zoro is doing. Sanji is no idiot. He knows when he’s being ignored, but he thought the stupid mosshead was over it when he invited him to the park.
He could not have been more wrong.
Somehow, even though they were all there together, Zoro manages to sit on a bench the entire time while Sanji and Chopper play. Don’t get him wrong, he loves playing with Chopper, the boy really is too smart for his own good and is probably brighter than Zoro. When Sanji points this out to said man, the only response he receives is a shrug. Sanji thought that by inviting him out, Zoro was giving up on his whole avoidance plan, yet somehow by simply being together and ignoring Sanji, the mosshead has elevated his evasion.
“I just don’t understand what happened! Yes, we’re all caught up on the project and yes, we still hang out with Chopper together, but I don’t think he’s said more than a sentence to me in over a week!” Sanji met up with Luffy and Nami after class and is venting his frustrations with the mosshead.
“I mean I kind of just want to spend time with the guy, no matter how strange that sounds. I thought we had become friends! I don’t know what his problem is, but he’s starting to piss me off.”
Sanji must have said something funny because Luffy starts laughing and almost falls out of his seat.
“Man, Sanji you’re so funny! You remind me of my friend Franky!”
“How on earth do I remind you of that perverted mechanic?! We are nothing alike!”
“Shishishi, you don’t look like Franky silly, you sound like him! I swear Franky was complaining about the same thing when his wife Robin got busy with a project and he didn’t see her for a few days.”
Sanji furrows his brows, “That is nothing like what’s going on with me and Zoro. Of course, he would be upset if he didn’t see his wife. I personally would be distraught if I didn’t see such an amazing woman every day!”
Sanji can see Nami fiddling with her hands before she also gives her opinion on the matter, “I have to say, I kind of agree with Luffy. It almost sounds like a lover spat.”
She looks directly at Sanji when she says it, trying to anticipate his reaction.
Sanji fumbles with his words, “A- a lover’s spat ?! Me and Mosshead?! No, no, no Nami, I think you must be mistaken, I like women . He is the opposite of everything good about women!”
Sanji can tell he’s getting flustered but can’t seem to calm down, “I mean, he’s a man ! I’ll admit that I would consider us friends now, but I could never like another man that way. Nope! I can’t even imagine it! And even if I did, Zoro ? I don’t think I could ever date a jock like that. Someone who only thinks about the next time they can go to the gym? Not very attractive if you ask me.”
Sanji ignores the breath Nami sucks in halfway through his rant. Once he finally takes a breath to calm himself, he looks up and sees Nami with a look of horror on her face. He’s confused by what would get such a reaction out of someone as confident as her. When he notices that she’s staring at something behind him he turns to see what is going on.
The color drains from Sanji’s face and dread drops heavily in his stomach. Right behind him stands Zoro and Usopp. The latter keeps shooting worried glances between the two men having a stare-down. Sanji hears ringing in his ears as he stares at Zoro.
How much of that did he hear? Sudden panic and guilt consumed Sanji as he tried to figure out how to apologize. He needs to tell Zoro he’s sorry and that he didn’t mean any of it. He didn’t mean it!
He didn’t mean it..?
“Zoro! Usopp! What are you guys up to? Are you here to eat too? Here, Zoro, have some of my meat!”
Sanji can’t take his eyes away from Zoro. From how Nami reacted, it was obvious Zoro heard most, if not all, of what he said. He’s not sure why, but he knows if he doesn’t try explaining himself, everything between them would change. Even though he knows he had to say something fast, he can’t think of the right words to say and ends up gaping at Zoro.
Apparently, that isn’t good enough for the other man. Zoro takes a deep breath, tells Luffy he isn’t hungry, turns, and walks away. It takes Sanji a second too long to realize Zoro is walking towards the parking lot. By the time Sanji cathces up to him–he’s surprisingly fast– Zoro already made it to his car and was driving away. Sanji watches him leave, chest heaving from running after him. By the time he makes it back to the group, he knows that he needs to find a way to talk to Zoro. He still isn’t exactly sure what it is he wants to clear up, but he knows he’s fucked up.
“Now what am I going to do?! Zoro said he would help me with the assignment I procrastinated on! AND he was my ride home! Namiii, help me!”
Nami rolls her eyes at Usopp. When she catches sight of Sanji walking back up and taking a seat, she gives him the coldest look he has ever seen on her face. He knows he messed up, but was it really so bad that Nami is that upset with him?
Sanji looks to Luffy to see his reaction to the whole situation. What he sees shocks him. Everyone knows Luffy is the most go-lucky person in the world. Nami swears she’s seen him pissed before, but no one believes her and Luffy doesn’t ever comment on it. But seeing the look on Luffy’s face right now makes Sanji question everything he knows about the other man.
Luffy had stopped eating at some point, which was already a red flag, and is now watching Sanji with absolutely no emotion on his face. His signature smile is missing and his eyes hold such seriousness that Sanji can’t meet them.
“What? What’s wrong?” Sanji tries playing dumb.
Nami scoffs at that, “Usopp, let's go to the library. I’ll help you with your project and if you don’t mind waiting for my classes to finish, I’ll even give you a ride home.”
Nami grabs Usopp's wrist and drags him away, not before glaring at Sanji one last time.
Sanji is shocked. What did he do to make his precious Nami so mad at him? “What’s up with Nami? Why is she so mad at me?”
Luffy takes his time answering Sanji, still watching him with that serious, contemplative look on his face.
“I’m sure you know why we’re all upset, and if you would stop for a second and think about it, you’ll be upset at yourself too.”
After that cryptic message, Luffy grabs what food he has left and follows after Nami and Usopp.
Sanji sits there for a few minutes trying to process everything that happened within the last ten minutes. After sitting there for a bit, he realizes all his friends had up and left.
What the fuck just happened?
Notes:
The angst was pretty minimal in my opinion, but I kinda loved writing it. There's going to be at least another full chapter of some sad boi Zoro and Sanji soooo....ya
Let me know what you think!

Chapter 9
Summary:
Apparently everyone is upset with Sanji. If he thought Zoro was ignoring him before, he doesn't have a name for what's going on now. Will he figure out what he did wrong or will it take some outside help to clue him in?
Notes:
Get ready for some good old angst (nothing too bad I promise). I actually really liked righting this chapter so I hope you like it too!
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Zoro is depressed.
He’s holed himself up at home as much as he can and wishes he could just skip class and drink away his sorrows, but he knows that he still needs to be there for Chopper and stay on top of things. Thank god for that kid, without him, Zoro isn’t sure what he would do with himself.
It only took him the drive home to get the courage to call Perona and tell her what happened. Of course, she was with Mihawk, so when she heard how upset he sounded she put him on speaker. He wasn’t worried about what Mihawk would think, not only had it been obvious at their dinner that he had feelings for Sanji, but he had come to terms with his sexuality years ago. While he doesn’t necessarily flaunt it he also isn’t ashamed of himself, but the same can’t be said for the Cook.
Zoro left out some of the more hurtful things Sanji had said when he recounted the story to Perona, even if she liked cute things so much, he knows she wouldn’t hesitate to go to campus and beat up Sanji. And she sure could, Zoro still has some scars from where she beat him up after he ruined one of her dresses.
Sadly, Mihawk knows him too well and could tell he wasn’t telling them everything. After Zoro finished telling them what happened, it was silent on the other end of the line for a moment.
“Do I need to head to that school and remind that boy whose son you are?”
Zoro’s eyes widened. He knew Mihawk could be pretty protective of his kids, but it was rare that he explicitly showed such emotion. Zoro quickly told him that it wasn’t necessary and to not bother with something that trivial.
After constantly reassuring the two that he would be okay, and that no, no one needed to beat anyone else up, Zoro let them go. He would see them in a few days at dinner anyway. While he secretly loved spending time with them and normally looked forward to their dinners, he was dreading this next one.
***
Zoro is quite impressed with himself at how well he’s timed this. His new goal is to avoid Sanji even on campus, but since they share a class, Zoro is worried he would run into him eventually, but so far it hasn’t become an issue. It is obvious that Sanji has been trying to find some window to try and talk to Zoro, but he isn’t making it easy on him.
Zoro makes sure to arrive at their class right when the professor starts the lecture so Sanji can’t catch him beforehand or try and sit next to him. With that, he is also able to get a seat close to the door, so once they are dismissed he’s already out the door before Sanji can even finish gathering his things.
Zoro thanks the gods that they had already finished the research on their project so he doesn’t have to suffer through any more project meetings. He isn’t sure what he would do once they have to meet again for the presentation…but that’s a problem for future Zoro.
The one issue he keeps running into that is testing his resolve is Chopper. Zoro hates that Chopper has to suffer through this, but even beforehand, it proves difficult to avoid Sanji when they meet at the park for Chopper.
Zoro feels bad that he keeps lying to Chopper, telling him that Sanji is too busy to hang out with them. Every time Chopper asks when Sanji won’t be busy anymore, Zoro feels the guilt building. Always telling him that he just isn’t sure.
Denying Chopper is difficult, but dealing with Nami is proving to be an issue too. Every time they all hang out and Sanji joins, Zoro gives some random excuse and leaves.
“Zoro, talk to us! I know why you’re ignoring him, but it’s not healthy to keep it all bottled up like this!”
Surprising everyone, it is Luffy who speaks up first, “Nami. Stop. This is between Zoro and Sanji. They’ll figure it out,” Zoro is always surprised by the air of finality that Luffy shows anytime Nami tries bringing it up.
Zoro has known Luffy the longest, and while he knows his friend has a serious side, it’s always shocking to witness it.
Life has been going on like this for a few weeks, the deadline for their presentation has been slowly creeping closer and Zoro is hyper-aware of it. He’s trying his hardest to get over his feelings before they have to meet again, and hopefully, Sanji has forgotten all about it and wouldn’t mention it.
***
Sanji does not forget.
The first few weeks of Zoro ignoring him, Sanji had been almost obsessed with trying to get the other to talk to him, but after having Luffy scold him some more (he will never get used to that) and telling him to use his head, he stops.
Well, ‘stop’ might not be the right way to put it. Sanji is still obsessed with talking to Zoro, but now he spends more of his time trying to decipher what Luffy meant when he said Sanji would be upset with himself too.
At one point, he even finds himself driving past Zoro’s house. He doesn’t even remember passing Baratie and heading to Kuraigana. He realizes as he drives by that he actually misses the stupid mosshead.
When he mentioned that he drove by to Nami, she was almost red with anger at that. She hit him over the head multiple times, calling him an idiot while doing so.
Before she stormed away, she had turned around and pointed her finger at Sanji, “You better get your shit together before you make any more stupid decisions and fuck things up even more.”
After getting such a scolding from Nami, he decided it was finally time to get Zeff’s opinion about the whole situation, something he normally waited to do as a last resort.
“You remember that stupid mosshead that was here a few weeks ago for dinner?”
Zeff stops what he’s doing and turns his full attention to Sanji, “Yeah I remember that cactus-head. I was wondering when we would talk about him. How is that friend of yours? When will I see him next? Do I need to prepare my shovel talk?”
Sanji doesn’t know how to respond to that, “Sh- shovel talk?! Why on earth would you need to give Zoro a shovel talk ?!”
Zeff doesn’t say anything for a minute, “Before I answer that, why don’t you tell me what's wrong with you and that cactus.”
Sanji is scared of what Zeff has to say but surrenders and tells him what happened a few weeks ago. Throughout the whole story, Zeff remains quiet. He had turned back to the stove while Sanji talked and started a kettle for some tea.
Once Sanji finishes, he’s nervous about what Zeff might say. Zeff turns back to Sanji and asks,
“Why are you so upset that he might be offended by what you said? If he really knows you well, and from what I’ve seen, he does, why does it bother you so much?”
Sanji doesn’t know how to reply to that. He has specifically avoided any introspective thoughts regarding the whole issue.
“Why is it so important that you give Zoro an explanation?”
Zeff’s probing makes Sanji lash out, “I didn’t mean it! Okay?! I didn’t mean any of it and I don’t want him to think that I did! I want him to know that I enjoyed hanging out and getting to know him and Chopper! I miss him! I miss how easy it was to be around him!”
Zeff only nods at his admissions, which just makes Sanji panic even more.
He starts waving his hands around, “But that’s not to say that I like him! I mean he’s just a good friend is all! I mean, I’m a ladies ma-”
“Stop Sanji. Stop lying to us both. Stop saying things you already admitted to lying about. You know, it’s not a bad thing if you like this Zoro boy right? You can still be a ‘ladies man’ and like the poor boy.”
Having Zeff see right through him sends Sanji into a spiral. Zeff goes back to making tea while he lets his son process.
Do I like Zoro? No way. I mean he’s a great friend but…but he’s a man! I’ve never liked a man like that before! I mean men are…men! But Zoro is…no. No way. But… Zeff made a good point. Why was I so worried about him? I mean of course, I didn’t want to lose a friend, but that was never why I wanted to talk to him. I just want to see him again.
I miss him.
I miss Zoro.
I like Zoro.
I like Zoro.
Oh shit. His ears are ringing. If he thought he was spiraling before this, he didn’t even have a word for how much he is freaking out now. Zeff notices this and moves him to a chair and hands him a cup of tea.
“You know I don’t care who you like right? As long as you like them and they treat you right, it could be anyone. On that note, I’ll stand by you no matter what decision you make.”
Sanji didn’t realize that he is so anxious about what Zeff would say. Immediately after hearing that reassurance, all the tension leaves him and he relaxes into his seat.
Sadly his relief doesn’t last long. What has he done? What must Zoro be thinking? What has he been going through while Sanji has been trying to come to terms with liking his friend?
Zeff catches his train of thought, “So…are you just going to sit here and drink tea or what?”
Sanji would comment on the lack of subtlety later, “Hold your horses Old Man, and mind your own business. I’m going to head out soon, there’s just something I need to do real quick.”
***
Zoro is sitting at the table helping Chopper with his homework when he hears a knock on the door. He checks the time. Must just be Luffy looking for dinner. Idiot.
“Luf, why can’t you just go home and eat your own food instead of mi-” Zoro stops when he sees who is at the door. He panics and slams it closed.
What is Sanji doing on his front porch right now?!

There is only more chapter after this then an epilogue. I wasn't going to have an epilogue, but I didn't really like how I planned for it to end, so bear with me!

Chapter 10
Summary:
Zoro could not believe Sanji was on his front porch right now. He was hesitant, but might as well hear out the cook and get it over with.
Chapter Text
What is he doing here? What could he possibly have to say that he didn’t that day? Did Luffy and Nami put him up to this? If this is some poor excuse to apologize, Zoro is going to kill all of them, starting with the idiot on the other side of the door.
“Who was that at the door?” Zoro jumps at Chopper’s question, not hearing the boy walk up.
“Umm no one, just someone that goes to school with me. Why don’t you go to your room while we talk?” He can see the confusion in Chopper’s face, but he must have known Zoro was hiding something and left without question.
Zoro sighs, shocked that it was so easy. He turns back to the door and hesitates. Does he really want to deal with this right now?
Come on, Roronoa. Just get it over with. Rip it off like a band-aid.
With his pep-talk, he opens the door. If he wasn’t so nervous, watching Sanji pace back and forth rambling to himself would almost be funny.
“Shit. I knew this wouldn’t be easy, but just shutting the door? I know he doesn’t want to see me, but did I fuck up that much? How am I going to explain if he won't even look at me?” Zoro keeps watching Sanji, waiting to see if he would snap out of his spiraling and see the door was open.
Not seeing an end to…whatever he’s witnessing, Zoro clears his throat and finally gets Sanji’s attention.
“What do you want?” Emotionless and straight to the point, Sanji is doomed.
“Umm I wanted to talk to you about something,” Sanji hesitates, “I brought you some onigiri.”
He shoves the package he had been carrying at Zoro. He hesitates but takes the offering from Sanji.
“Come in. Keep your voice down though, I don’t want Chopper knowing you’re here.”
That hurt, but Sanji can understand where he is coming from. He nods in agreement.
Zoro leads him into the living room and they sit. Zoro watches Sanji expectantly. He’s the one who came over, he better not expect Zoro to start the conversation, Sanji is visibly nervous though.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry for all those horrible things I said about you. I didn’t mean any of it, Zoro,” Sanji finally looks at the other man and Zoro can see the desperation in his eyes.
Zoro just rolls his eyes and lets out an emotionless chuckle, “Oh, so you didn’t mean it when you essentially called me an ugly jock? Or that you could never imagine dating someone like me? Because from where I was standing, you were pretty convincing.”
Zoro doesn’t hear whatever it is Sanji mumbles under his breath, “If you’re not going to speak up just get out. I have things to do.”
Sanji looks panic-stricken at the thought of being kicked out, “Yes!”
“Yes, what Shitty Cook?! I’m tired of whatever this is!”
“Yes, I was lying! I didn’t mean any of it! I was an idiot and don’t know why I said any of that!”
“Ya right, so you’re not disgusted by the thought of dating me? A man?” Zoro is getting upset with the conversation,He knows what Sanji is about to say, but he still doesn’t think he can stomach hearing it all again.
“No, I’m not. I actually think you would be a great boyfriend.”
Zoro’s eyes shoot to Sanji’s, looking for any hint of a lie or teasing. What he sees instead makes him blush.
Pure, unadulterated honesty and affection.
What?
Zoro can’t seem to look Sanji in the eyes anymore. He turns away, trying to hide the blush he can feel taking over his face. He hears Sanji give a warmhearted laugh.
“Little Mosshead is cute with a blush. It makes you look like a little strawberry.”
Zoro sputters at the comparison, “Shut up Shit Cook.”
Sanji’s only response is that warm laugh of his again.
Damn, Zoro likes that laugh.
It quickly ends though and a more remorseful look crosses Sanji’s face, “I really am sorry though. It was cruel of me to say all that. I was being a massive jerk.”
Zoro looks back at him, “Yeah, you were.”
“I- I’ve never really felt that way about another man before. I honestly didn’t even realize what it was that I was feeling until recently. I think I was just scared, and instead of trying to process it all, I lashed out. Instead of confronting my feelings, I hurt you and pushed you away. You didn’t deserve that.”
Zoro is patient with him, knowing Sanji needs to get all this off his chest.
“Once Nami and Luffy mentioned ‘lover’s spat’, I panicked. I’ve always considered myself straight and the suggestion that I might be otherwise…I wasn’t sure how to handle it. In the midst of my panic, I hurt the person I care about the most. It took a few people to knock some sense into me, literally and figuratively,” Zoro chuckles at the image of Sanji getting hit over the head by Nami. Sanji lights up at seeing him laugh.
“Once I finally realized what I was feeling, I felt horrible about how badly I treated you. How could I hurt someone I cared so much about?”
“Sanji, it’s fine.”
“No, it’s not! And I know you, I know you’ll forgive me because you’re that good of a person.”
“I came here for two things, well, maybe three. First, I wanted to apologize, face to face, because it's what you deserve. Second, I wanted to give you the onigiri, as somewhat of a peace offering and because I was afraid that this would be the last time I would ever be able to make you your favorite food. Third….” Sanji pauses.
“I wanted to confess. I like you, Roronoa Zoro. Despite how you first come across, you’re smart, sweet, and the strongest person I’ve ever met. You do everything in your power to give Chopper everything he might need while working and getting an education. You are loyal, and despite everything going on in your life you still manage to find time in your schedule to hang out with the crew. I would be an idiot to not have fallen for you.”
He sighs, this was the part he has been dreading the most, “I just hope we can stay friends. I know just because I apologize and you forgive me, I’m not ignorant enough to assume everything will go back to the way it was.”
Sanji knows that even if Zoro forgives him, it doesn’t mean he likes him back.
“You don’t have to respond, let alone reciprocate or anything like that. I’m not naive enough to expect you to feel the same way and I don’t want to make you uncomfortable.”
Okay, now Zoro is confused. Isn’t this when they’re supposed to start dating?
(When he later tells Nami about this she hits him and tells him they’re both emotionally stunted idiots.)
He furrows his brows, “Why would I be uncomfortable?”
“Come on Zoro. I know it must be weird to have a friend who you know has a huge crush on you. It’s fine though, it might suck for a while, but I’ll be okay.”
Oh no, not this martyr shit again.
Zoro re-words his question, “No, I mean why would we just be friends?”
Sanji just sits there staring at him, trying so hard to process what Zoro means.
They hadn’t yet realized that their earlier yelling has gotten the attention of a curious Chopper, who runs into the living room with a blinding smile.
“Sanji! What are you doing here? I’ve missed you! Are you still too busy to hang out with us? Is that onigiri?!”
“Yes, it is Chopper. How about we get some plates and eat them before it gets too cold? How does that sound, little man?” Sanji ruffles his hair, giving Zoro a look that says they aren’t done talking.
They exchange some light conversation while they eat, getting caught up with what they missed the past couple of weeks.
“Are you boyfriends now?”
The sudden question makes Sanji choke on some rice. Zoro on the other hand, froze with his mouth open, about to take a bite from his food. Sanji thinks he sees a 404 error flash across his eyes.
Sanji is the first to calm down enough to respond, “Uhh, Chopper, what made you think that?”
Chopper gives them both a confused look, “Well, I know Papa Zoro said to go to my room, but I was curious who was at the door. So, I might have hidden and listened to you talk.”
“Chopper, it’s not right to eavesdrop! It’s rude.” Zoro’s still mostly frozen, but he has enough brain cells to scold Chopper.
“Chopper, your dad is right, it’s not nice to eavesdrop, especially on adult conversations. Still, why do you think we would start dating after that?”
“I thought that if two people liked each other they became boyfriend and girlfriend? Or I guess boyfriend and boyfriend?” It seems that stumped Chopper a bit, but Sanji is still impressed.
Zoro nods along as if what Chopper is saying was obvious. Sanji shoots him a puzzled look.
“Well, you’re not really wrong Chopper. But that’s only the case if both people like-like each other.”
“You like-like Papa Zoro though, right?”
Sanji blushes and spares a quick glance to Zoro, “Yes, I do.”
“Papa, you like-like Sanji too, right?”
“Yes.”
That one-word, emotionless response is all it took to break Sanji. He stares at Zoro’s deadpan face. If he looks close enough he can see a tinge of red on the tips of his ears.
“Are you serious?!” Sanji yells.
“Yeah.”
“Yeah?! Can you give me anything more than a one word response?!”
Realizing his work here is done and that Sanji is just going to keep yelling at Zoro. Chopper grabs his plate and leaves the adults. He sighs as he sat down and turns on an anime.
“Yes, Shit Cook, I like you too. I thought that was obvious.”
“Obvi- obvious?! How can it be obvious if you don’t say anything to me?!”
“It’s not my fault you’re so oblivious.”
Sanji can’t stand this idiot, “I’m not going to argue about this with you.”
They both sit there in silence. They can hear Chopper’s show playing in the living room and the boy giggling at whatever is happening.
“So you think I’m the strongest person you’ve ever met?” Zoro shoots Sanji a smug grin.
“No. I take it back,” Sanji is quick to reply, making Zoro scowl at him.
After a little more awkward silence, Sanji proposes, “Do you want to try and hang out soon? Just the two of us this time.”
Zoro smiles at a blushing Sanji, “You know you can just call it a date?”
Sanji is already dreading this. He can’t stand a confident Zoro. He can already tell he’s going to be the flustered one in this relationship if Zoro keeps being so straightforward with things like that.
“Okay, yes, I’m asking you out on a date!”
“Good, Chopper will be with Mihawk this weekend. I’m free Saturday.”
“Saturday is perfect. I’ll see you at 6.”
With that Sanji suddenly stands and walks around the table to Zoro, who looks confused at what Sanji is doing. Once Sanji is in front of Zoro, he bends down and drops a soft kiss on his forehead. He straightens up–clearly blushing at his own actions–clears his throat and walks away.
Zoro can hear him say goodbye to Chopper while he sits frozen in his seat.
What the fuck did that idiot just do?
Zoro can hear the front door close and Sanji drive away. He doesn’t move until Chopper comes in and sits back down at the table. He props his head on his hands and gives Zoro a wide grin.
“I really like Sanji,” The sudden comment snaps Zoro out of his stupor. He looks to Chopper, contemplating how to respond.
“I like Sanji too, Chop,” under his breath he whispers to himself, “I really like him too.”

It's their first date and Zoro is shocked by what Sanji picked for them too do.

Chapter Text
Sanji is screwed.
Figuratively that is, he only wishes it is literal.
He told Zoro that he would plan their date, but he still can’t believe he is going on an actual date with Zoro . They’ve been meeting frequently throughout the week between classes and Sanji can see the progression of their relationship will be slow.
Other than the one time he kissed Zoro’s forehead, there has been absolutely zero skinship between the two. While Sanji isn’t the biggest proponent for PDA, he also keeps wanting to show off. It was almost as if, once he accepted his feelings, he’s suddenly consumed with thoughts of Zoro. He tries keeping it to himself, but he will sometimes catch himself giving Zoro silly little smitten looks across the lecture hall.
This is all to say that he wants their first date to be memorable. He has known Zoro for over three years but for the life of him, can’t figure out what to do. While dinner at Baratie is always an option, he knows that isn’t really what Zoro considers a good time.
On the other hand, the only things they really have in common are their athleticism (Sanji had admitted to Zoro that he actually really enjoyed going to the gym and Zoro teased him all day for it) and competitiveness.
That makes Sanji pause. Something competitive they could do?
Could it really be that easy? No way, that was way too cliche. Unless…
Sanji laughs to himself, getting a few curious glances from passing students, he knows exactly what they’ll do.
***
Only two days later, it’s time for their fateful first date. To say they are both nervous would be an understatement. When Sanji arrives to pick up Zoro–he had decided he would never let Zoro drive them anywhere–they both just stand at the front door staring at each other.
Do they hug? High five? Shake hands? Salute? How do you say hello to your almost-boyfriend for your first date?
They end up doing none of those because Perona thought that was the perfect time to shove Zoro out the door.
“Why are you just standing there? We’ve got this covered so go have fun!” Zoro stumbles towards Sanji and gives Perona a glare over his shoulder. Sanji follows Zoro to the car, taking his time appreciating the other man’s…assets.
“Don’t forget to use protection!” Perona yells when they make it to the car. That comment makes both men turn and glare at her, Zoro out of anger and Sanji out of embarrassment.
Zoro heaves out a big sigh once they finally start driving off, “Sorry about Rona, she was dropped as a child and doesn’t know when to keep her mouth shut.”
Sanji laughs at that, “It’s fine, if it were any of my brothers, they probably would have made worse comments.”
That gets Zoro’s attention, “Are you close with your brothers? Do they…know?”
“Know? Oh. No, not yet, but it’s not because I don’t want them to. I just don’t want to tell them about us and scare you away. If they found out I was in a relationship they would all come and try and intimidate you. Speaking of intimidation, Zeff wants to officially meet you again.”
The thought of seeing the old chef again scares Zoro, “Don’t give me that look Mosshead! I think he wants to give you a shovel talk, but between us, he’s really just a big softy. Nothing to be scared of!”
Ya right, he’s only saying that because the damn geezer loves him.
Zoro spaces out for a bit, thinking about what on earth Zeff would say to him and then considers if Mihawk even thought a shovel talk would be necessary. Sanji notices that his thoughts are elsewhere and lets him stew in peace. By the time Zoro is back in the right mindset, they are parking at a restaurant with a neon sign that reads ‘Onigiri Miya’.
“You know, just because onigiri is my favorite food doesn’t mean that it’s the only thing I’ll eat,” Zoro gives Sanji a reproachful look at his choice in restaurant.
Sanji gives him a beaming smile, “But why would I do that? I have to make sure to keep my mosshead happy and well-fed!”
My mosshead?!
Zoro blushes at that, “Damn cook. You can’t just say things like that.”
Sanji only smiles wider and continues, “Zeff has worked with the owner a couple of times before, he’s pretty talented so I’m also excited to try it. Come on Mossy, let's go.”
***
Sanji was right. That was some of the best Onigiri Zoro’s ever had (nothing compared to Sanji’s but he’s going to keep that to himself).
“You did good, Cook. As far as first dates go, that was definitely impressive.”
Sanji gives him a scheming look, “Did you think that was all we were going to do? I know I’m a chef and love to feed people and all that, but even I know that a great date needs to be more than just dinner. Come on, there’s one more thing I have planned.”
It seems that Sanji is going to keep surprising Zoro. If he’s being honest with himself, he’s glad there is more planned. He didn’t lie when he said that dinner was enjoyable, but he’s looking forward to spending more time with Sanji.
As they’re driving to their next destination, Zoro starts recognizing some of the buildings they’re passing, “Cook, where are we going?”
Sanji glances at him from the corner of his eye, “Be patient, you’ll see soon.”
Zoro huffs and sits back in his seat.
That didn’t last long though when they finally pul up to their destination and he realizes why the drive seemed familiar.
“I asked Nami if this was a good idea and she told me about this place,” Sanji has that blinding smile of his back, happy to have brought Zoro here.
Zoro really loves that smile.
Sanji pulled up to the bowling alley Zoro used to visit with Chopper and Hiriluk before the doctor passed. Zoro can’t count how many memories he’s made here with his son. He and Chopper still visit from time to time, but with their busy schedules, it has been a while.
“Sanji,” Zoro is speechless, did the Cook realize just how much this place means to him?
The soft look Sanji is giving him answers that question. He might not fully realize just what this place is to Zoro, but it is obvious that it means a lot.
“Is this okay, Mossy? I haven’t played in a while but I thought that doing something competitive would be fun.”
“No, this is perfect!” Zoro is like a kid, he’s practically vibrating out of his seat out of excitement.
They went in and while Sanji pays for some shoes for them, Zoro looks around in nostalgia.
They get settled in their lane and Sanji types in their names in the system.
Mossy and Cook
That nickname is starting to grow on Zoro, another thing he will never admit to Sanji.
Sanji gives Zoro a seemingly nervous glance, “Uh hey, Zoro? It really has been a while since I’ve last played, will you help me with my grip real quick?”
Zoro just shrugs and walks over to him, “You’re right-handed right?”
Sanji is shocked that was something Zoro remembered about him, “Uh, ya I am. Does that matter?”
“Not too much, but I’m left-handed so I just have to think of it differently.”
He grabs Sanji’s hands, placing his left so that it supported the ball. When he grabs Sanji’s right hand, he uses his own left to maneuver Sanji so that it’s sitting in just the right spot.
“Okay, just make sure you support it like this. But you don’t want to hold it too tight or else it’ll be harder to let go–Sanji, are you even listening to me?”
Is it hot in here?
Sanji knows that he intentionally lied to Zoro about forgetting how to hold the ball, he just wanted to get close to the man. What he wasn’t prepared for is how much having Zoro so close to him would affect him. Zoro’s hands are surprisingly soft but also somewhat textured. Sanji thought that after so much kendo he would have bad calluses–though he still has them–they fit their owner well.
“Okay, back off Mosshead, I got it now,” Sanji shakes off Zoro’s hands. He won’t be able to concentrate if he keeps touching him like that. Sanji steps up to the lane, getting in the zone. He takes a deep breath, swings his arm back, and releases.
Strike.
He probably should have tried a little less.
“Uhh, beginner's luck? You’re just a really good teacher?” Sanji awkwardly chuckles. Zoro crosses his arms and gives him a disapproving look.
“Looks like someone lied. Guess I can’t take it easy on you then, can I? Get ready to get destroyed, Cook,” Sanji must have a dirty mind because it’s almost like everything Zoro says is an innuendo. Sanji shakes himself out of those kinds of thoughts and shoots Zoro a smirk.
“No lies here, Mossy. It has been a while since I’ve played, I just left out the fact that me and Zeff used to go every week.”
They continue on like that, both trying to beat the other while exchanging teasing remarks. Every once in a while, Zoro will get a little too close and fluster Sanji, throwing him off each time.
In the end, Zoro won.
Sanji swears he was just being a good date and let him win.
The drive back to Zoro’s didn’t last long enough. Sanji pulls into his driveway and they sit there for another minute before Zoro speaks up.
“I should probably go in. Chopper should be in bed already, and I don’t want to inconvenience Rona and Mihawk,” He trails off, seemingly like he has more to say but instead nods and starts getting out of the car.
Sanji quickly shuts off the engine and gets out too, “Let me walk you to the door!”
Zoro gives him a soft smile, “I would like that.”
Sanji’s upset with himself for not parking on the street. The walk to the front door from the driveway is way too short. Zoro stops before opening the door and turns to Sanji. They both stand there in comfortable silence, enjoying each other’s presence.
“Umm, well I had a good time. Thanks, Sanji. I’ll talk to you later,” Zoro rubs the back of his neck, and turns to open the door. Before he can grab the door handle, Sanji snatches his wrist. Zoro turns back around and gives him a questioning look.
“Wha-” Before he could ask what is wrong, he feels a hand on his cheek and another on his waist, pulling him slightly.
He feels the softest touch on his lips.
Sanji kissing him?
It can barely even be considered a kiss. It lasts a second and is just a brush against Zoro’s mouth before Sanji pulls away. They make eye contact, Sanji searching for something on Zoro’s face. Zoro didn’t give him a moment to find anything as he leans in once more. Now that he’s had a taste, he wants more.
This time, it has more force behind it but is still soft and pleasant. There isn’t much movement, both afraid of scaring the other off. After only a few seconds, they pull back again, both with goofy smiles on their faces.
“I was wondering if you were ever going to make a move,” Sanji sputters at that remark.
“Why did I have to be the one to make a move?” He asks, outraged.
Zoro looks away guiltily, Sanji knows exactly what his reasoning is. Zoro knows that this is the first time Sanji has been in a relationship with another man, and he wants Sanji to be comfortable enough to initiate the first move.
Mosshead was worried about doing anything physical wasn’t he? Damn, he’s so cute. Idiot.
Sanji’s hand moves from Zoro’s cheek to the back of his neck, leaning in with more force and confidence. He needs to get it in Zoro’s head that he is committed to making this work and that he has nothing to worry about. This shocks Zoro, who freezes for a second before reciprocating. The show of dominance has Zoro gripping Sanji by the lapels of his jacket.
Before Zoro can deepen the kiss even more he hears the front door open and someone clear their throat. Zoro tries jumping back from Sanji, but the grip of Sanji’s hand on Zoro’s waist tightens a bit, preventing Zoro from moving too far.
When did he even do that?
Zoro turns to see Mihawk standing in the doorway with an unimpressed look on his face.
“I heard you pull up and was wondering what was taking so long. Perona said to leave you be, but I was getting worried,” He spares Sanji a glance before looking back at Zoro, “Looks like I was worried for nothing. I’ll leave you two be. Don’t be too long.”
With that Mihawk turns and closes the door behind him. Zoro stands there in shock while Sanji bursts out in giggles. Zoro punches his shoulder.
“Ow! What was that for?!” Sanji asks around his giggles.
His little laugh is infectious and makes Zoro smile, “It’s for being a little shit, now let me go. If I’m not inside soon, he’ll send Perona out here and I really don’t want to deal with that.”
Sanji lets go and puts his hands up in surrender, “Fine, Mossy. Your wish is my command.”
Zoro rolls his eyes at him, what has he gotten himself into ?
“Let me know when you make it home, okay?” Zoro gives him a pointed look, but quickly looks away before saying, “And if you want, you can call me tomorrow if you’re free and we can maybe hang out. I mean, Chopper was jealous when I said I would be gone with you so I was just thinking that tomorrow the three of us could spend time together-”
Sanji cuts him off with another kiss, this one slow and sweet.
God damn, his Mossy was so cute. How did it take him this long to realize it?
When he pulls away, he gives Zoro a smile, “I have work some tomorrow but I should be available around dinner, I’ll let you know.”
Zoro nods, a little stunned from that last kiss. Sanji pecks his cheek once before skipping off to his car. Zoro watches him walk away, still somewhat in a daze. Sanji waves as he gets in.
As Sanji turns the street corner, Zoro finally goes inside. He ignores all of Perona’s questions and has Mihawk help usher her out the door so they can get home. By the time Zoro is getting ready for bed, Sanji texts him that he made it home and will keep him posted on plans for the next day.
That night, unbeknownst to either man, both Zoro and Sanji fall asleep with a smile on their face. Looking forward to when they will see each other next and what the future has in store for them.
Notes:
Thanks BinaryUnicycle for solidifying that I should write their first date!
I normally don't write anything with like, physical affection but I was actually smiling the whole time I wrote this so I hope it's good!
