Chapter Text
"It's still weird doing this without getting bitten." The witch that was so affectionate of plants commented as she tended to the beautiful garden bush, making her companion for the afternoon chuckle in response.
"Of course you've mastered all these Human Relam plants so fast." Amity mused, gloved hand brushing over the petals of the pretty flower that decorated the bush. She didn't know the name of all the plants just yet but the flowers in Noceda's small garden were beautiful. So far she enjoyed helping Willow out take care of the plants, even though the work she's been doing was minimal and the activity was more of an excuse for the two to hang out.
Willow wiped the sweat off of her forehead and adjusted the straw hat on her head. "This book Miss Camila gave me was really helpful," Sitting beside the plant witch was the object in question, and with an encouraging signal of a hand wave Amity picked it up. "There's so many pretty flowers in it!"
Intrigued, Amity began flipping through the pages. The amount of plants was almost overwhelming, each page filled up with a picture and little baaic information of the flower in question.
"Did you know humans give each other flowers as gifts? Different flowers even have different meanings. Some flowers represent gratitude, love, grief… there's even some that represent vengeance!" A playful grin formed on her face as Willow continued her spiel and Amity listened in interest. "I think it's incredible how much thought they put into it all."
Amity merely hummed in agreement, an idea brewing in her mind.
"Okay, that's the last one!"
The grocery bag hit the counter with a small thud and Luz stretched, making a face. "Ough, my achey bones." The whine was more of a joking one, and it made her mother laugh as she hoped it would.
"You have at least thirty more years until I want to hear you complain about that. Thank you dear, I'll take care of unpacking from here."
With a grateful kiss to her temple Luz was excused from the kitchen. With how quiet the house was it was easy to guess the rest of the squad was at the old house, and Luz was excited to join them as soon as she could to continue working on the portal.
This has to be the one.
Just as she was about to enter the room to grab a couple of things, someone opened the door from the other side and the two almost ended up colliding into each other.
"Luz!" Amity exclaimed, startled, hand clutching her heart area and even though Luz got just as startled she couldn't help but smile at the witch's cute reaction. "You're home!*
It was then that Luz noticed Amity looks a little nervous, and she doubts that's the result of being run into. "You okay Amity?" Her scarred brow arched, glancing at the way the other girl's hiding something behind her back and avoiding eye contact. "I thought you'd be at the old house with the rest."
"I was just…" Amity cleared her throat much to Luz's amusement, fighting back and failing not to smile at the girl's poor attempt to remain cool and calm. Especially when her face was so red to contrast her neutral expression. "I was waiting for you. Figured we could go together and uh all that."
Luz opened her mouth when suddenly Amity pulled her into the room by the wrist and cut her off before she even had a chance to make a sound. She must've taken notice of Luz's puzzled expression. "Okay, I have a gift for you actually and I wanted to give it to you!"
Gaze meeting the nervous golden eyes, Luz's own softened as she found it hard to tease her about it when it looked like such a big deal to Amity to be this nervous over it. "Awh Amity, you know you didn't have to get me anything."
Amity shook her head and finally presented to Luz what she's been hiding behind her back.
Colorful petals tickled Luz's nose and filled her sight with the witch's sudden move. She managed to stiffle back a sneeze as Amity bashfully apologized and pulled the bouquet further back from Luz's face so she could properly take the gift in her hands.
Blinking slowly, Luz began inspecting her gift.
It was… quite a bouquet. It's not like she was a plant expert like Willow but usually she'd see them made out of multiple of the same flowers, maybe two different species. This is the first time she's seen a bouquet composed of this many different types. It looked a little odd and lacked coherency. So colorful. But so beautiful. Luz felt her heart melt with affection at the unusual but sweet assortment of pretty flowers.
"Awww Amity, these are so beautiful." She cooed, gazing back to her flustered girlfriend. She'd be lying if she said she didn't consider doing this kind of a gesture herself but was worried it would make her look too cheesy. Then she realized Amity looked like she had something else to say, and before she could ask her about it the girl spoke up, mild nerves still present in her voice.
"Willow told me how humans use flowers to convey different feelings." She started, fidgeting with a fistful of her purple romper. "It was… a little confusing because during my research I noticed some flowers have multiple meanings. But I think I've gotten a hang of it…*
Luz stared wide eyed, both surprised and not surprised at the length Amity went with this. On one hand she herself never got too intimate knowledge of meanings of flowers aside the cliche ones present in fanfictions or gave it too much thought, on other hand this is Amity. Of course she would be the one to give it this much thought. And Luz adored that about her.
She encouraged her with a soft smile and Amity relaxed, stepping closer. Her finger brushed over one of the flowers. "This one represents gratitude… because I'm grateful I met you and to have you in my life." Luz caught a soft smile on Amity's face and swallowed, feeling her face begin to flush, and nodded for the other girl to continue. Carefully she traced another flower. "That one's for acceptance. Because you accepted me and gave me a chance when I felt like I didn't deserve it."
Amity carried on and with each flower her voice lost the bashfulness and gained more confidence in her tone. Compassion. Understanding. Admiration. Peace. Endurance. Luz's heartbeat gradually speeds up as she receives an explanation for each one.
"And this one's for…" Her voice trailed off softly, fingers hovering over the last flower. The meaning of this one is something even Luz knew.
A simple red rose.
Love.
Silence fell between the two in understanding and it wasn't the uncomfortable one. Neither really felt like it had to be verbally adressed. They both glanced at each other from the corners of their eyes, flustered. Amity's finger brushed against Luz's as she pulled away and Luz couldn't help but to break into the goofiest smile.
Without a warning she pulled Amity into a tight hug and earned a shy yelp, mindful not to crush the flowers.
"This is probably the sweetest thing anyone's given me," Luz said quietly above a whisper, something stuck in her throat and tears in the corners of her eyes. To her relief Amity returned the hug with equal tightness. "Thank you Amity…"
With a soft sound of a sniffle the two pulled away, now giggling but the tint redness still on both of their faces. To top it off and just show how happy she is with the gift she gave her girlfriend a kiss on the cheek, pleased with the way the corners of her mouth curved up into a smile because of it and it's something Luz will never get tired of.
"Wait for me for a second, okay? I need to find a vase and make sure these pretties are watered."
"Sure, take your time." With a quick nod and that pretty smile, Amity squeezed Luz's hand then headed downstairs and outside.
Luz's search for a vase didn't take long, asking Camila for one and showing off the flowers like it's the most precious bouquet of gold she's received. As she placed the vase with variant flowers onto the desk, she felt a pang of guilt she kept trying to deny and tuck away. Did she really deserve everything these flowers represent?
Her eyes caught a glance of Amity outside through the window, rocking on her heels back and forth with a wide smile and seemingly happier and lighter than she was when Luz first arrived home. The anxious knot in her chest loosened and she smiled, grabbing her hat on her way out of the room. At least for now, and for the effort Amity went through, she'll put those self doubtful thoughts aside.
