Welcome to the Azura Book Club

Summary:

Two years after its creation, the Azura Book Club gets its third member.

Notes:

Written for Day 1 of Lumity Week. Prompt: Azura Bookclub

Work Text:

A knock on the door to the Azura Book Club room makes Luz raise her head. Nobody ever knocks; Amity walks in whenever she wants, as do the teachers if they want to talk to either girl, but nobody knocks. Only people who want to join the club would do that. And to Luz’s never-ending frustration, nobody has shown interest in the club for the past two years.

Abandoning the art she was drawing (a piece of fanart of Hecate and Azura with a rainbow behind them), Luz rushes across the room. And there, standing in the open doorway, she finds the first willing visitor to the club room.

Her first thought is that she has never seen this girl before; she must be a transfer student. The girl looks about three years younger than Luz, wearing a familiar technicolor uniform that shows she also studies all tracks. She stares around the room, her eyes never fixed on one spot for too long, and stands with her elbows tucked against her sides, hands sticking out like a pair of T-rex arms.

“Hi, welcome to the Azura Book Club!” Luz says, grinning at the girl. “I’m Luz Noceda, co-president of the club. Are you a fan of the books? Oh, are you interested in joining? We’d be happy to have you.”

A few seconds too late, it occurs to Luz that rambling might scare the new kid away, so she catches herself before she can launch into a full infodump about why the loves the book series so much.

Luckily, she doesn’t scare the girl off. Instead, the girl smiles and says, “Oh, it’s so nice to meet you. I’ve heard all about your club and it, it sounds amazing. I’m Marcy Wu and I just transferred to Hexside. I, I don’t have many friends, so my parents said I should join a club, and then I saw the Azura Book Club, and… it looks amazing.”

Luz smiles as Marcy rambles even more than she did. They clearly have a lot in common.

“Well, feel free to make yourself at home,” Luz says, gesturing for Marcy to enter the room.

Her entire collection of Azura books and assorted merch are sat in the middle of the table, along with all her art supplies. Marcy’s eyes light up at the sight, and she hurries over to the table.

“Whoa, I’ve never seen this one before!” she says, carefully picking up an Azura action figure.

“Looks like she already has,” Luz says to herself, before wandering over to the table and resuming her drawing.

Amity doesn’t really play Grudgby anymore, but when her friends on the Grudgby team asked for her to fill in for an injured player, she felt like she couldn’t say no. Which is why she shows up at Azura Book Club over an hour late.

When she enters the room, she expects to find her girlfriend alone, reading or drawing, or planning her next Azura/Hecate fanfic. But, to her shock, another student is in the room. She and Luz sit opposite each other at the table, engaged in a rapid-fire conversation about what appears to be the biggest plot twist in book three.

“Hi,” Amity says as Ghost hops onto her shoulder to stare at the new student. “Sorry for interrupting—”

“Sweet Potato!” Luz cuts her off, racing across the room and pulling Amity into a tight hug. “Where’ve you been?” She leans back enough to stare at Amity’s face, and adds, “Wait, why are you all sweaty?”

“I was an emergency substitution for the Grudgby team,” she explains, gently brushing a lock of Luz’s hair off her forehead. Stringbean flicks her tongue at Ghost, who meows in reply. “Sorry I’m late.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Luz says, giving her a soft kiss. “Did you win?”

“We did, yes,” Amity says, kissing her back. “So… are you going to introduce me?”

“Oh, sure!” Luz slips her arm around her girlfriend, leading Amity over to the table. “This is Marcy Wu, and she’s a huge Azura fan too.”

“It’s… it’s lovely to meet you,” Marcy says, smiling.

And as Amity chats with the first new member of their club, Luz keeps her arm around her, holding her close.
