Summary
When Kurt agreed to return to Lima to help Sam prepare the New Directions for Nationals, he knew he’d have to face down some ghosts. He thought he was prepared for that. But that’s because he never even entertained the idea that he’d be here, struck breathless at the sight of one of them made flesh.

POV: Kurt
MCs: Kurt, Blaine, Rachel, Sam, Burt, Jesse, OCs
Setting: Ohio & NYC
Rating: GTags: Major Character Death (past), Soulmate Themes, Student/Teacher, Age Difference, Supernatural Elements, Fics that made me cry, Broadway Kurt, Teacher Kurt (35), Student Blaine (17), grief/mourning, mentions of finn's death, Kurt & Rachel, rachel/Jesse (background), Kurt/others (past), Blaine/others (brief), clever use of canon dialogue, excellent use of songs/lyrics, unexpected and weird but delightful, a lot of pining, eleventh hour get together, in every lifetime
Notes: Finding a gem of a story like this one is exactly why I continue to comb through piles and piles of stories that don’t particularly interest me. This had such lovely, unexpected moments of heartbreak, startlingly clear and striking sparks of hope, incredibly well-crafted elements--narrative, structural and character-based. There are beautifully tied in film and literary references that aren't overwrought or distracting but instead advance the plot and subtly heighten tension. While this is definitely Kurt-centric (and as such I would have liked to see a little more of the Kurt and Blaine of it all), many elements, scenes, and dialogue from canon were utilized to maximum effect here, so while you're left wanting at the end--it's in a good way. Their story isn’t done and you just want to see more.
CW: There are age difference elements at play here as it is, at first brush, a student/teacher story, but the novelty of the premise and the skill of the execution are worth it. It's essential to the plot and, in my opinion, delivers on its payoff. (This is also rated G for general audiences, if that helps). [Last Read: 7/22]
