Chapter 1: Remember When it all began?

Chapter Text

Today, our story takes place in the city, a city that was currently sleeping. This was due to the fact it wasn’t even 6 in the morning. In just a couple of hours, however, these streets would be filled with people making their daily commute to school and work. This includes our currently sleeping protagonists.

Very conveniently for the pacing of this story, this was about to change. With the arrival of 6 am, came the screeching noise of a certain 14 year old girl’s alarm clock.

Rin Kagamine sat up in bed and reached to turn her alarm off. Due to the fact it was 6 o’clock in the fucking morning, and that bestie hadn’t yet turned on a light, she missed, and knocked her lamp off her bedside. Cussing herself out for setting her alarm 2 and a half hours before school started (she lived down the street, what was she thinking?) she wiped the sleep out of her eyes, (or most of it anyway) and proceeded to get up and turn on a goddamn light (she probably should have done that first).

Now that she could actually see, Rin looked down at her broken lamp. She was kind of frozen in place as she decided what the fuck she should do with it (should she throw it out? It meant way too much to her!) before deciding that ultimately, that was Future Rin’s problem and that she should probably get her shit together and march to school.

HIGH school.

That’s right folks, our favourite 14 year old is officially a high schooler! She’s basically an adult now and can get herself to school by walking and being all grown up and stuff. Rin practically skipped across her room, before remembering that it was still 6 in the fucking morning and that her lazyass brother, (also starting high school today) would definitely still be in bed. And good for him! Rin was starting to regret waking up so early.

She grabbed her fresh, new, only worn once because she had to try it on, uniform and put it on for the second time. Rin just couldn’t get over how grown up she felt when she wore it! It was like she was trying on a princess dress except it wasn’t a princess dress and was instead the uniform for the local public school.

Realising that she had been wasting a whole 5 minutes staring at herself in the mirror (a 5 minutes she had to spare, by the way), Rin pulled herself together and sat down at her small vanity.

She was very proud of it, she wasn’t the best at makeup or anything, (she wasn’t good at it either) but she still loved the feeling of sitting down and doing up her appearance, like a real lady. Rin picked up her hairbrush and began to comb out her knotted hair, (she was a wild sleeper, ok?) being sure to slide her super iconic headband onto her head. (She bought it last week.)

Realising that this getting ready stuff was taking way too long, and that all the readers have probably closed their Ao3 tab by now out of sheer boredom, Rin picked up the pace and went to eat breakfast in the kitchen. It was 6:30 now, and while the Kagamine household was still dead quiet, the sun had begun to actually rise. Rin proceeded to make toast, because although she was an adult, she wasn’t allowed to use the stove to make eggs by herself. Boo.

Let’s fast forward to 7 in the morning. Len, Rin’s twin brother, and the resident asshole of the Kagamine household, finally decided to get his ass into gear and get out of bed. By this point, Rin had packed all her school stuff into a bag, packed and readied her guitar, (its name was Hilda, and she brought it everywhere) and was sitting precariously on an uglyass stool by the door as she waited (impatiently) to leave.

Len approached getting ready completely different from his sister. He had been awake for less than 10 minutes and already had his uniform on, bag packed and was trying to leave the house.

“You look like a hedgehog.” Rin called over at him from her dumbass stool. It was true. Len looked as though he had been electrocuted by the toaster, which he hadn’t touched by the way, because he had forgotten to grab breakfast.

“It’s called hair gel.” Len responded with an air of confidence that Rin found admirable, considering he looked as though he was about to join Team Sonic. Still, she wasn’t about to crush his dreams, and began to sincerely look forward to their 18th birthday, where the photos of him on his first day at high school would be shown on a PowerPoint presentation.

“Why are we still waiting? I am ready to go.”

Rin hopped off the stool, and it made a really fucking loud noise that probably woke their neighbours.

“Breakfast. Now.”

Rin was a firm believer in the importance of a good breakfast. It was always good to start off with some food, as it powers one through the entire day. (Or so my mother says).

In truth though, Rin (and my mother, apparently) had never experienced exam season and had never been forced to stay up until ungodly hours studying, and therefore wasn’t truly aware of the timesaving qualities of not having breakfast. That will happen to her one day, but that day is most definitely not today.

And because that day is not today, Rin throws a muffin at Len’s helmet (it protected him well) and the twins proceeded to leave the house at 7:10 in the morning.

Rin and Len’s new school was approximately a 10-minute walk. Obviously, that depended on whether or not they missed the lights constantly or if there was a shit ton of traffic on the road. If the universe was on their side, it could be 5 minutes. If the universe was not on their side, Len would get hit by a car.

Or maybe the universe would be on their side in that scenario. That’s up to you.

Anyway, at the ripe hour of 7:30, (universe wasn’t on their side) our two protagonists entered the school grounds for the first time. Our other protagonists wouldn’t enter for another half hour, as none of them were crazy enough to show up to school an hour early.

A huge sign that read ‘FIRST YEARS GATHER HERE’ was hanging at the entrance to the school auditorium, where the first years had been told to gather. Alas, there was not a single first year gathered at the meeting site other than Rin and Len, and the auditorium was locked.

“Is this even the right spot to gather?” Rin turned to her brother.

“The sign says, ‘First years, gather here’, so I guess so.”

Rin, shocked that her brother could read, didn’t respond. Instead, she sat down on a bench outside the auditorium, Hilda by her side, and waited for someone else to rock up to the function and open the door.

Unfortunately, God was having a bit of a moment right about then and didn't want any gathering to occur and it began to pour out of nowhere. It wasn’t even useful because his tears alone wouldn’t open the fucking door, OR get anyone to gather.

The pair jumped up and sprinted across the grounds to the main ‘section’ of the school. Absolutely sopping wet at this point (his hair was flat on his head now, if that meant anything) Len opened the door to a random classroom and sat in the first chair that he saw. Rin nervously scooted over, noting the large poster of the Octonauts on the wall. For some reason.

“Are we sure we are allowed to do this?” She asked tentatively.

“Wanna sit outside?”

Rin placed her guitar on a nearby table before pulling up a chair and sitting opposite her brother. “What now?”

The answer to that question would show up in the form of a girl. An older girl. An absolutely, drop dead, Rin wanted to drown she was so gorgeous, kind of girl.

Adorning the second-year uniform, she opened the door to the classroom and gasped overdramatically at the sight of the two drenched 14 nearly 15 year olds. This girl was, of course, Hatsune Miku.

“Ohmigoshareyouok?” She dropped her three bags to the floor (Rin could have sworn one of them was a keyboard) and proceeded to search for a towel like she carries one around. (She doesn’t.) “Shit, I don’t have a towel.” She then cupped her hands around her mouth. “Ah! I did NOT just curse in front of you guys! Don’t tell anyone and don’t repe-”

Swearing wasn’t an issue for Rin or Len, and it clearly isn’t for you either, dear reader, otherwise you would have put this fic away a long fucking time ago. Miku, however, didn’t want to upset the young and clearly impressionable children in the room.

“Calm down. We aren’t 5.” Len rolled his eyes at her. “We’ve heard worse.”

Miku calmed right down instantly, and much to Rin’s surprise, pulled up a chair. She then pulled up a heating unit and faced it towards the three of them before sitting down.

“Even though I don’t have a towel, hopefully this does the trick.” She shot a pure smile in Rin’s direction. Rin was ready to melt into the fucking floor because not only was this girl looking at her, she was SMILING at her. The audacity. Rin had never been in love, but Jesus Christ if she was ever going to start…

“Why the fuck do you have a heating unit?” Len’s stupid question snapped Rin out of her thoughts. Rin wanted to slap Len because who asks that? Did he want the pretty second year to think he was stupid?

Instead of ridiculing Len and mocking them out of school on day 1, Miku just laughed. She had a really cute laugh actually, and Rin was feeling sappier by the second.

“No, silly! They come with the classrooms!” She continued to laugh even though it wasn’t funny. This was, as you can imagine, really endearing, and Rin gain a new dream, to be called ‘silly’ by the second year.

“So… uh… um… er… What’s your name?“ Rin asked the girl, absolutely nailing it with the conversational skills.

“Miku. Hatsune Miku,” said Miku, as though she was James Bond or some shit. (Who knows. Maybe she was.) “And you guys?”

“Rin, Len,” Len pointed as he spoke, before Rin could even open her mouth. Feeling only slightly overshadowed, she decided it would be best to let Len continue driving the conversation. It wasn’t like she was doing a good job of it anyway.

“That’s so cute!” Miku squeaked. “I bet you guys are nervous, eh.” She procured a muffin out of nowhere and gave it to Rin.

“Oh, um, I couldn’t possibly…”

“Take a bite!” Miku gestured. “Don’t worry about it, I stole it this morning.” Rin raised an eyebrow and obliged. It wasn’t like it was the muffin of Christ or anything, but it was still pretty good.

“Ha! Good right!” The older girl clapped her hands together. “The school café sells them for about 3 bucks.” (Idk what currency Miku is talking about. That is up to the interpretation of the reader.)

“Why did you steal it then?” Rin asked. “If they are so cheap?”

“Oh, I was kidding.” Miku responded simply. Rin tilted her head in confusion. “Well, you wouldn’t have eaten it if I said I paid for it!” Miku was acting as though this made sense (It did, Rin is just silly), so Rin didn’t question further, and continued to let her talk about all the café food and the prices, which was, coincidently, easing her nerves quite a bit.

This went on for a while.

“I love first years, I hope you guys are excited for orientation in…” Miku checked her watch, “10 minutes. Holy shit.”

Rin looked down at her watch in a panic. In all of her admiring of the older girl (Len would say she was a simp but fuck him anyway), she had completely forgotten that she had both places to be and people to see.

Springing out of their chairs, the twins bid farewell to Miku. Or, more like Rin bid farewell to Miku because Len didn’t like her very much and was pretty happy they were finally leaving the room, never to see her face again.

“Wait! Guys!” Miku called out as they were about to leave her in the dust. “Meet me back here after school, I wanna hear how your days went!”

Rin shot her a thumbs up. She didn’t trust her voice right about now.

“Also, Rin! Don’t forget your guitar!” Miku handed Hilda to Rin, who was feeling increasingly embarrassed because who the fuck brings a guitar to school and just leaves it somewhere. She thanked her before following her brother down the stairs.

“I liked her. She was really nice.” She said to Len as they started making their way down to the auditorium again. Len had no fucks left to give and was basically shoving people over at this point, something Rin would never do, even though she didn't want to be late either. She appreciated it though. It wasn't easy trying to march through a crowd carrying a fucking guitar.

“I hated her. She seems like a fake bitch.” Len responded. He was just salty that he didn’t get a muffin. He would change his tune eventually. He was quite lucky then, that Rin didn’t hear him and kept going down the stairs because if she HAD heard him, he would have gotten a slap across the face.

Finding their seats in the auditorium wasn’t tough, and neither was the rest of the school day. In fact, let’s just fast forward all the way through the day, and go right to the end, when Rin and Len were supposed to meet up with Miku. Spoiler alert, this wasn’t going well.

For starters, Rin’s memory was 100% failing her at this point. Like, let’s be real. It had been HOURS since they had made their agreement in the first place, and so much had happened since then (one of her classmates tried to jump out of a WINDOW) so like she totally forgot where they were supposed to meet.

Not to mention, this school was fucking LARGE, ok. Rin would have loved to be able to navigate it day 1, but unfortunately, that didn’t seem possible at this point. Also, Hilda was way heavier at the end of the day than at the start of the day, and Rin was honestly ready to abandon her ass because Miku was so much more important than a poorly named guitar. She kicked some poor person’s locker.

All hope was appearing to be lost, when…

“Are you lost?”

A tall pink-haired 3rd year tapped Rin on the shoulder from where she was standing. Rin was immediately embarrassed, because she just kicked a locker for no reason and that probably looked really weird to a bystander.

“Kind of?” Rin responded. “I am looking for a classroom, but I don’t know where it is.”

“Describe it.” The third year’s questions were very short and direct. She seemed niceish enough, polite and firm. (I hope my English teacher is proud of my characterisation.) Not having much to lose, Rin thought she might as well give it a shot.

“It has windows that stretch right from the front of the room to the back?” She asked, hoping and praying to anyone that would listen that that was enough describing. It wasn’t.

The older girl shook her head.

“Mmm, that’s not good enough. That’s every classroom.”

“Um… It has a 3 by 8 desk structure?”

She shook her head again.

“A heating unit?”

“…”

“Octonauts poster?”

“Come, follow me.” The woman of few words grabbed Rin’s sleeve and dragged her up two flights of stairs, down 3 different corridors and then down another flight of stairs. On her left was the classroom.

“Thank you so much!” Rin bowed in the direction of the girl and was surprised when she started to walk inside and sit at one of the desks. She watched as she pulled out a maths textbook from nowhere and started to run through it.

Miku wasn’t there yet, and neither was Len. She couldn’t imagine where they had ended up. Surely, she was late?

The third year, in the meantime, hadn’t even looked up at Rin once. She looked completely absorbed in her textbook, which was fine, but surely, she could be asked to send a ‘no worries!’ Rin’s way? Like??? She wasn’t curious as to what Rin was up to???

Rin sat on one of the other benches outside the room and waited for Miku. And Len too, I guess.

They would arrive about 14 seconds later. (Len was in the wrong corridor, and Miku went to the canteen again, and happened to pass him, otherwise he would’ve been in the total wrong location.)

“Hi!” Miku called out to Rin, before ducking into the already occupied classroom.

“You’re not allowed to be here, sorry.” The girl said shortly.

“What do you mean I can’t be here? I AM here?” Miku responded, and pulled a chair up for her, Rin and Len, who was lagging behind.

“If you are here, they why can’t we be here?” Len fired back. He felt as though he was on a roll.

This was around about when two more people entered the room. Both were third years, and one of them was carrying a cake. It was the one holding the cake that called out.

“Hey Luk-” She stopped abruptly and looked around at the rest of the parade that had assembled in the room. “Woah, this is way more people than usual! Don’t tell me Luka made some other friends!”

She had a teasing, but still loving look on her face, and stuck her tongue out at the other girl, Luka. Rin instantly liked her.

Luka was proving to be very bad at being social, and Rin was more surprised that she had friends then she would’ve been if she hadn’t had any at all. Apparently, Luka thought so too.

“They aren’t exactly my friends. They were just leaving.” She then stuck a pencil in her mouth and continued to work through equations or whatever shit she was doing. Miku stuck her tongue out at her behind her back.

“Not so fast!” The other person who had entered with the cake carrier, a guy, spoke up. “Why don’t we just invite them to eat the cake with us?” Luka just looked at them with a quizzical expression, and completely disregarded his words, directing them back at the girl carrying the cake.

“You can’t eat cake in a classroom, Meiko. It’s unsanitary.” She tapped the pencil on her desk. “It’s also against the rules, unfortunately.” Everyone groaned.

“Yeah, but she made it, and I iced it, and we worked hard on it!” the guy said.

“Listen to Kaito. It’s the first day for god’s sake. Let us have some fun before exams pick up.” Meiko dumped the cake onto the desk. For the maker of the cake, she was definitely being unnecessarily rough with it, but it didn’t die or anything so it was fine.

“I get that you made it. I appreciate your effort, I really do. But the last thing I want to do on the first day of school is to get in trouble, and you know as well as I do that no one is allowed to be in a classroom after school unless they are a part of a club.” Everyone groaned again. It was looking to be a hopeless situation. Or it was, until Miku whipped out a piece of paper from her skirt pocket. (That’s how you know that this is a work of fiction, y’all. We all know skirt pockets aren’t real.)

“Oh my god, I totally forgot!” She unfolded it and slammed it onto the desk. “Join my club!”

“Your club?”

“You have a club?”

“What kind of club?”

Keep in mind that all of these questions were asked at the same time, which, big rip to Miku, who had to answer them lmao.

“It’s a band kind of thing. I started it at the end of last year, but like I have no friends, so I have no one to do my band stuff with.”

“Band stuff?” Rin asked.

“Yeah, you know, like singing and songwriting and music playing and stuff. You play the guitar, right? That’s why I struck up a conversation with you guys this morning, you have been carrying that guitar around like it’s attached to you.”

“Oh.” Rin said, a little put out because it was Hilda that brought Miku to her, and not her sheer fucking awesomeness. Well, hey, it could’ve been Len’s awesomeness (he doesn’t have any) so it could have been worse.

“I’ll pass.” Luka cut in. “I have no interest in that kind of thing.” She was lying, she had an immense interest, but she’d already kinda been a bitch to Miku, and felt bad about hanging out with her now. Rin, on the other hand, was still mulling it over.

On the one hand, if she joined, she would get free friends, and could talk to and hang out with Miku as much as she liked. But also, she was lowkey pretty shit at the guitar (not quite true, she’s a little down on herself, ok?) and she didn’t want Miku to realise that she was terrible and not want to talk to her.

“What kind of skill level are you after?” Meiko asked, apparently having read Rin’s mind. “Like let’s be real, you must be desperate if you are asking 5 complete strangers to join your club.”’

“I’m a little desperate, yeah.” Miku admitted. “Like I’m literally on my knees begging right now.”

This wasn’t true. Miku was very much standing upright, this is a figure of speech. In the meantime, Rin’s thoughts had straightened out, (in that she could understand them, not in that she’s straight now dw) and she figured out what she wanted to do.

“Um, I’ll join, but I don’t think I am good enough to yet. Like, I want to get better, and I’ll work hard. Also, I can sing, so-“

She would have continued but Miku threw her arms around her ecstatically. Rin could feel her face get hot as she got a mouthful of cardigan.

“Well, Luka is a really good guitar player! I’m sure she could help teach you.” Kaito said cheerily, warranting a heavy glare from the aforementioned ‘really good guitar player’.

“I’m not joining unless everyone else is joining.”

“I’ll join.”

“Same, why not.”

“Seriously?”

“Is that really everyone?”

“I’m not joining.”

Everyone turned to glare at Len fucking Kagamine who couldn’t keep his mouth shut for 2 seconds and who I honestly forgot about until this point. He was a moment ruiner, and he knew it but he had to say something. Truth was, he didn’t want to be in a club with Miku. He hated Miku.

“Oh well. No cake for you.” Meiko started unboxing the goods.

“I was kidding!”

“What did I say about the GODDAMN cake?”

Both Len and Luka spoke at the same time.

“It’s a club cake.” Meiko shrugged. “Surely that makes it ok?”

It did actually, on a technicality, and so everyone had a slice, and made plans to meet there again tomorrow.

And that is the story of how our protagonists got together and formed their club. Naturally, because all of them have 2 braincells collectively, they would get up to lots of random, weird shit. This is only the story that serves to set the scene before it all goes tits up. It’s only downhill from here, folks.

Anyway, Rin and Len had finally arrived home. It wasn’t too late, but it was late enough for the streetlamps to be on, and the kidnappers to be in their vans. Upon arriving at their humble abode, Rin instantly collapsed onto the couch in exhaustion. Apparently, high school was going to be much more draining than she had initially anticipated.

Somehow, though, she was quite ok with that. She had made 4 new friends in one day, and she considered that a massive win. Absolutely nothing could ruin her day at this point.

Oh, except for Len yelling down the stairs, probably the last thing she wanted to have on her mind right now.

“DUDE. WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO YOUR LAMP?”
